A demonstration of advanced Fusion Chordal Playing as a sample of my online Guitar Lessons Sessions.
I studied ten years with the great Jazz Teacher/Composer Dennis Sandole who taught John Coltrane, James Moody, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, and many others and I have played and recorded with musicians as Bassists Michael Manring and Percy Jones, Producers Neil Kernon and David Torn. Keyboardist Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater played on two tunes of my 2001 disc "Addition By Subtraction" as well.

Brilliant and underrated musician and educator. I was privileged to interview him on my radio show "Fusion and Fire" on WRFG Atlanta in 2001 when the Addition by Subtraction project with Manring and Stevens came out. That recording still blows me away.

This and the 2nd of these videos on playing chords has been very inspiring. I've just been and am going through some difficult life changes and decisions. Your examples and ideas have helped me make a decision to get back to writing music. A major slump has affected me as of late. I've worked with a lot of great material such as Gil Goldstein's Jazz Composer's Companion, Beyond Functional Harmony by Wayne Naus, and many other fine volumes in my personal music library. Also studied with some great arrangers, composers and musical directors in the past. I'm not in a position to be able to take lessons by Skype at the moment. Hopefully that will change in the not too distant future. Thanks so much for your videos Scott; I'll be subscribing and watching your other videos on this channel. God bless.... :0)

Why do all fusion guitars have the tuning keys upside down ? Are all fusion guitarists left handed or it's just the way fusion guitars are made ?

if using these jazz fusion type of progression like what you show in the video to create something, How does this progression related to the main key or just atonal? thanks
@mtstyre7768
@mtstyre7768 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tinlok, It relates to many modulations quickly really. I used interval cycles to make progressions here (chords moving by semitones, fourths, major seconds, etc.)
@tinlokchui2000

Hi Im from Poland and I use google translator ,I hope You understand me :) In which scale we play it is dependent on the chord in accompaniment,right? So how can I play in one selected scale when changing chord in progression I automatically change mood / scale? How it looks chord progression for each scales? For example,playing chords C major and G7 in which scale will be solo: c,d,e,d,f?Ionic or mixolydian? Ionian with Cmaj and mixolydian with G7 ,right? So how can I play in one selected scale for two different chords in progression? Could You give an example of progression characteristic for one selected scale and explain how to play solo in mood of this one selected scale if chords in accompaniment are changing? I tell You how I see it (D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D) together with Dm= dorian mood,right? (D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D) with Dm7 will be 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 of dorian degrees but when I change/replace Dm on G7 then (D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D) become 5,6,7,1,2,3,4 mixolydian degrees . Even if I play mixolydian shape (g,a,b,c,d,e,f,g) with Dm chord it is still dorian mood because (g,a,b,c,d,e,f,g) are 4,5,6,7,1,2,3 dorian degrees Right or not? When I started to learn music ,I focus on chords ,scales and created nasty habit in this way - habit of mindless playing scales instead of music. How to get rid of it? Besides there is something more No one taught me how to compose in different music generes I would like to know how to arrange accompaniment which is based on a simple C major chord,once will be flamenco then the country, funk,bossa etc etc The same chord, harmony is the same, the same notes but different genres - how to do it for jumping between different styles? Could You recommend some good literature for learning? I would like to have Dr. Michael Chamberlin seminar notes from ORIGINAL PRESENTATION - World Saxophone Congress, 2015 Strasbourg France Do You have it?Could You help me with get this pdf?

Thanks for this Opiekun and good observations on the Dm7/G7 progression. The earlier examples from the clip stay within a Cmaj7 chord sound with a raised 4th (+11) from a Lydian Mode tonality. The others shift tonality so would need different scales to embellish them. for instance, at one point I used a Bmaj9+11 shifting to a Fmaj9+11 requiring two different Lydian Modes-one based on B and the other F. In essence we can change just enough tones to accommodate the next chord to make a smooth unified change. The voicings do not have to have a root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th and in fact the more interesting and varied sounds do not need to follow this formula. I might recommend transcriptions of your favorite chordal players for your own analysis and I will be doing more videos on this topic which I hope are helpful. I am not familiar with the seminar notes you mentioned so I cannot be of much help there. I hope this helps.

Thanks for responce :) I have one favorite song because of which I fell into a depression and I sold guitar few months ago. This is NOCTURNUS - Alter Reality ...and OBSCURA - Velocity (apparently words ending in "ity" are dangerous for me :D ) I will be glad if You could make lesson with main riff and solos from Nocturnus (or Velocity solo) because this is to difficult for me. Check this song and tell me what You think about them :)
