The Evil Exes were the best part of the show, I loved getting actual closure for them. And the Twins being the smartest, understanding ones was amazing. I love when you develop villains without changing the fact that they are villains. If they do this for other series, I won't be mad

This series was nothing like I expected it to be, I was assuming it would be a more complete adaptation of the original graphic novels. However, it gives us something new that I didn't know I wanted until I watched it, and it pulls off the alternate story without undermining the movie which is mainly playing off.

This series was amazing, and I love it. It kept to the spirit of Scott Pilgrim while still doing something new. Sometimes it helps to see something you love from a new angle. And maybe it helped that while I had no idea about the plot twist before seeing it, I did read in interviews that Bryan Lee O'Malley said he was going to do something different with this, as he already told his story in the graphic novels and was not interested in telling the same thing over again. I just thought it might mean new subplots or something, but now I know what he meant, and it was gloriously awesome.

If it was advertised as a faithful adaptation and then turned into something different then *yes* it's a Bait & Switch; maybe gone better, but still a Bait & Switch. If trailers hinted at what it would be that would be different.

I think this show would’ve gone over better with general audiences if the marketing didn’t give the impression it was something different than it actually was. It is 100% a bait and switch, regardless of how good the content actually is. Takes Off is the definition of a bait and switch, baiting and then switching the bait out for something else. Honestly i am glad i saw the show before looking through twitter and seeing people's reactions. Like immediately when it came out i saw it, went in blind and i enjoyed it.

I did like the show and I love the whole "New Player +" approach to it. That idea I loved. The animation was excellent and the final two episodes are amazing. But it definitely was a bait-and-switch. Let's call a duck a duck. It's 100% a bait and switch. If it had been advertised as a sequel or something like "Scott Pilgrim: New Game +" it wouldn't have been, but they new what they were doing. This was a bait-and-switch that turned out okay and gave the evil exes an arc (which I loved). Also, my biggest gripe with it: the acting is TERRIBLE. Such an incredible cast and they all sound bored and dettached and like they recorded their lines as audio messages on Whatsapp. Also, Stephen Stills gets robbed YET AGAIN of being his best gay self. That is unforgivable.

An anime I thought was going to suck but ended up surprising me? That's an easy one... Fairy Tail. I tried watching it early on and I don't think I even made it through the whole of the first episode, but a good while later a friend convinced me to give it another shot. I sucked it up and powered through my previous feelings towards the show and before I'd even reached 10 episodes in I was hooked. It's been almost 10 years since then and I proudly say that Fairy Tail is my favourite anime of all time. Not bad for a show I couldn't stand first time around.

Remember Audience, no matter how good something is, if the trailers are telling you it’s going to be something and then pull the rug from underneath you then yes it is absolutely a bait and switch, and do not trust anyone saying otherwise as they are likely a shill.

I definitely prefer Ramona over Teela. For one Ramona isn't a hate-filled, self victimising asshole. I don't think people would have had so much hate towards Teela if she wasn't... Yeah. They both did the same "kill the original main character" but they didn't turn Ramona into a Grade A monster like Teela. I saw Revelations and some ideas weren't too bad and Mark's voice acting as Skeletor? Hilarious. Loved every minute of it. The animation itself I didn't think was too bad but I'm no animation buff so I can't say there were faults or it was bad as I'm generally rather easy to please as an audience. I liked Scott Pilgrim Takes Off as not only gets more detail into Ramona's past but also her exes which I thought was great, giving them a good bit of depth they didn't have in the movie. The running gag of each episode of Ramona CONSTANTLY changing her hair colour was a cute touch. I think all three, comics, movie and the anime can exist independently from each other. It is a little sad the Twins didn't get development themselves. Wallace destroying Todd was hilarious. I love they got EVERYONE from the movie back for this though which is such a hard thing to do I feel given how high profile some of these actors were then and are now. And the animation? Now this was beautiful. Felt like they were bringing the comics to life.

I am glad to hear this was good, because when I heard the rug pull I was ready to write this series off entirely. But in my case it was because from what I saw it seemed like it was going to be an adaptation of the comics which I enjoyed and would have loved to have seen. Honestly the only reason I even had any faith left in it was that o'mally himself was involved.

The first episode seemed like a normal adaptation but then the twist happened and i'm like: THE HELL?! I WAS HOOKED FROM THEN ON🎉🎉🎉🎉

Another anime I had gave try is Buddy Daddies. I thought it copying Spy X Family for similar setup. However, after episode one twist. The rest is really heartfelt story.

Bait and switch!

I would have been fine with "Ramona Flowers: Gets Her Shit Together", quite honestly. But I don't want to reward bait-and-switch; this is He-Man all over again, and is just inviting more assholes to do the same, appropriating IPs, and isn't doing it quite well. Sure the anime is kinda good, more like the visuals carry it a lot more. The english dub is kinda meh even though they got the same movie actors as VAs and it's obvious that only a few of them are actually good at VA because they have done it quite a lot -- as in Mae Whitman, voice of Katara and Amity -- and the other side of the coin Chris Evans and Mary Winstead don't fit and don't match the emotions portrayed by the character. And note, MEW is capable of an appropriate emotion like in the black-and-white movie screaming "come on!", unfortunately that's not the majority of her stuff. Though granted, it's probably more of the fault of the VA director not doing proper QA.

I started watching it with others, I continued nowhere the others just weren’t interested after ep 2 though I don’t think 1 of them payed attention to ep 2….so when they didn’t want to get back to watching it I binged the rest in a day and loved it. It was worth being created. It was fun and yeah Wallace future is great.

Gotta say the creator's response to the backlash is what pissed me off. Letting Netflix falsely advertised the product and telling off the fans who where concerned by the twist just for a moment of being "clever". Fans are tired of people being "clever" with IP because it tends to ruin it! Ria Johnson chose to be "clever" with Star Wars and the sequel trilogy became unsalvageable! Kevin Smith decided to be "clever" with He-Man and ruined several characters as a result! Being " Clever" with Scott Pilgrim turned people off of an otherwise good show. In hindsight giving up the twist would have been a better choice. How ever responding with a "I wasn't meant to trick you give the show a chance it's good" would have placated a lot of people instead he chose "If the twist upset you your a sexist piece of crap and I don't want you watching my show!"

I had so much fun watching this show and rewatching it and then rewatching it a third just to make sure i didn't miss anything. Scott Pilgrim vs the world is hands down my favorite movie of all time and i have all the graphic novels sitting on a shelf behind me as i type this out so needless to say i was frothing at the mouth with excitement when this was first announced. The First episode i think is an excellent example on how a pilot episode can set up a show for an entire series. I will say that Ending threw me for a loop. i know theres no current plans for a season 2 but i really hope the cast and crew re-explore the possibility after the major success from this show.

Ok so here’s my opinion on Scoot pilgrim takes off Spoilers if no one has watched it yet. Episode one kinda a bait and switch with a bit of a twist that gets revisited in the later episodes. So if you get past episode one it’s not really a bait and switch it’s more of an alternate timeline scenario as Scott met his future self being pulled into the future. But at the ending of the show we get a end credit scene “The real game is about to begin,” from Gordon probably meaning the league of evil ex’s are probably gonna get back together and fight Scott since they all never fought him because of Older Scott. There’s still more room to explore in the show

I saw the show pop up on my Netflix and was 'there is a Scott Pilgrim cartoon? What's the deal?' and looked up the wiki so I spoiled myself on the twist but if the wiki is accurate, O'Malley didn't want there to just be an animated adaptation of the work to come out. He wanted it to do something new hence the changes so that made it great for me. I went in knowing this and was quite pleased as it do so much with the rest of the cast that felt true to them and expanded the world to where I was happy seeing this as a sequel.

I'd argue something can both be a good show, and a bait and switch, like you could argue this is more of a twist, but I'd say we were promised a better retelling of the story we know in an audio visual format, rather than a original story, it's a good show, but they did trick us.

I just want to say Thank you Robyn, lik emany I was about to complety write this series off, but after watching this review I was willing to give it a 2nd chance and I'm glad I did so, it was way better the I gave it credit for to begin with, so Thank you for changing my mind for the better

Honestly, as someone whose been feeling anime withdrawal/burnout recently, I don't really care too much about spoilers(for the most part). as for anime I thought would be bad, but gave it a chance and it turned out good, the first thing that comes to mind is Beast Tamer. Mostly because most anime nowadays tends to be "the author expressing his kink", rather than actual good story telling. So naturally I expected Beast Tamer to just be fetish bait, only to find out it was actually a descent show.

I really hope all the writer strikes are over so they could just announce a season 2. This Scott needs more character development and I want to see it

Definitely a bait band switch down to the retroactively ruining past content. I mean now even the movie is tarnished since it incorporated that this bad future happens if the movie is followed. So even if you enjoy that it leads to that. Star had the same issue where you could watch the old stuff but it'll lead to Luke who considered ending his nephew, drinking out of a baby bottle filled with walrus milk, and ODing on the force.

I love everything about this series I mean yeah I was taken aback on how things changed, but the more I watched the episodes the more I was into it especially seeing Ramona's growth

The series is fine in that it tells an original story with characters we know & love, but I'll always have that niggling disappointment that we didn't see Kim's backstory adapted. There was no way to adapt Kim's story in the movie due to insufficient time, so I was hoping this would be a closer adaptation so that her story could be told.

I have taken your advice and turned the video off and will put into the watch later list with the other videos with spoilers for things that I have not yet watched or read. Looking forward to watching after I have watched the show.

Honestly I feel it’s like the game with a rerelease with more content, this basically like persona 5 and then persona 5 royal, p5 is the bread and butter of course simple and basic, p5r has the same story but with new stuff, like new story and just the new jazz. Already was spoiled on this before thanks for the warning for everyone else though. Also so far for 5 nearly one hour episodes the Live Action Yu Yu Hakusho wasn't actually that bad

I just gave it a binge after watching this, and the twist gave me School Live vibes. That looked like it was going to be an average school life series, but then the twist is revealed at the end of episode 1, which made me think "wait, what? I didn't sign up for this." Similar reaction with this show's plot twist. Also, sounds like the ending may have hinted at a sequel, with Gideon and Julie plotting something, but maybe that's just me. The original film made Ramona as just a "manic pixie dream girl" whose only big moment was fighting against her ex-girlfriend Roxie (also didn't expect Ramona to have dated another girl before meeting Scott when the film first came out, but whatever) and maybe Knives? Haven't seen the original film or read the graphic novels. I'm glad she actually got character depth in this series, as well as Scott accepting that it's just not going to work out between him and Knives because he is a consenting adult and she just isn't quite there yet (she's 17, which is either a high school junior or senior, but she's still a minor by definition).

For me was One Punch Man season 2. I did found joke, characters, and action scenes good. I do understand the upset for change of studio, some scenes could be better. But it better than nothing.

It took me a few episodes to start enjoying the series as I was told shown and believed it to be an adaptation and felt disappointed when it wasn't. It was in no uncertain terms a bait and switch it may be a GOOD show made by people who care for the source material unlike another show cough MOTU cough but at the end of the day it was a bait and switch whether it was good or not.

I think my only issue with the show is that it is kinda still a bait and switch. Now what they switched it with was good but still. My spouse and I saw the film because I was a big fan of the graphic novels. She was excited about this show because she knew the movie left a lot out and she did read Seconds. She was hoping to see an adaption of the original novels. This show just confused her. She just kept asking me questions and said it just seemed like random stuff was happening. I think expecting people that maybe saw the movie once to be okay with and able to follow a swapped meta commentary was a bit much. I like what i have seen so far, but I was still a bit disappointed because I was really hoping it would be something to bring in new fans rather than appealing to existing ones.

I didn't get spoiled, but I could tell something was up with the way they were ripping through the plot in episode one. I was not disappointed.

Despite it not being what everyone was expecting the marketing for this actually works. And I like this different take on the Scott Pilgrim versus the world story. Yeah it didn't have much of you know the title character in it but it does establish more outside of the world the villains and Ramona's backstory. And I like that day gone with this take instead of just recreating every scene that's from the graphic novel or movie. Yeah it was a Bait and switch but it's something that I think did a good job to pay homage to the original source material.

In a way, this situation reminds me the Nagatoro Anime and Manga, if you only watch episode 1 or just read the first issue, you might think it's just hateful crap and that is totally worthless, but the story is so damn amaazing and developes basically all characters so much, well except for Yoshi, but she is perfect as she is, that if you don't give it a chance, you migh miss one of the best stories of the decade. i'm glad this series is going well, and people have to admit that Netflix did learn of their mistakes and now is doing things in the right way, with so many anime related projects, it's really importand that they improve constantly.

At this point I'm starting to think MGS2 had a horrible impact on marketing after every modern case of blatant false advertising gets defended by comparing it to the Raiden fakeout. At least MGS2 advertised itself as a *sequel* and not an adaptation or return to form.

I too was initially worried about this show after the first episode. But, I reminded myself that this show was given to us by the creator of the original Scott Pilgrim, and gave it a chance accordingly. Suffice to say, not only was I not disappointed, but I found this series thoroughly enjoyable. One could almost say this is a bait-and-switch done RIGHT - a subversion of expectations that delivers something unique, interesting, and genuinely entertaining - rather than something dull, rote, and bordering on propaganda, like the products of CERTAIN OTHER STUDIOS lately. I feel there's little I can add to your assessment here. I do hope more people give this precious little series a chance. 😎👍

If you havent actually watched the Star Wars Visions series, you're missing out. None of them have anything to do with the mainline stuff and most of the stories are really well done with some amazing art direction. Would love to see you review that series some day.

I say I was kind of disappointed with it although I did started to warmed up to the series but after the last two episode I started to not like it! Manly because how they treat of characters of Scott development. Yes I know he’s not a perfect human being but the haul point of the movie and comics is that Scott is supposed to grow up and be a better person. This is like if they made a no more heroes anime and decided to disrespect the character of Travis Touchdown simply because dumb A-Hole (never mind the character and froth he had to go threw) and honestly that’s why I give it like a 5/10

Bojack Horseman was definitely one I didn't think what I got was what I was gonna get. Mike Tyson Mysteries too, that show was better than it had any right being.

I actually felt like the switch WAS the bait for me; I was going to get Netflix in January and binge some stuff on Crunchyroll through December, figuring it was just the plot I knew from the comics. But after watching a couple of funny moments on KZfaq I learned about the twist and immediately wanted to watch it to find out what happened in this version. So the different plot was a bigger draw to me than a straight up adaptation.

Eh even with your break down, im not excited to see it. It sounds like they took a fun quirky ip and turned it into yet another meta commentary.

The movie's ending makes that commentary itself... Nega Scott, the opposite of Scott is a "...a super-nice guy."
