I much prefer a flatbed for timber work, especially when you've got 3 or 4 drops, all that curtain opening and closing adds time to every drop. The other thing is trying to get the straps between the timber and the trailer roof, sometimes only a 6" gap, bloody nightmare, thankfully, the company I do a bit of work for has invested in new trailers with the straps attached to runners in the roof. You just pull them to where you want them, put the hook through an eye on one side, then attach your ratchet the other side and tighten up. Added bonus, no straps to wind up after tipping!

MANs offered our company a really good deal to upgrade our 14-plate TGS 440s to new models. We've now got 68 plate, and a few 19-plate TGS 440 models. We run powder tankers. I drive a Volvo FM and we've also got DAF CFs in the fleet. A lot of the petrol tankers seem to be MAN, I assumed the reason was due to the services that a lot of PCL garages offer are useful to them, and MANs tending to be lighter and cheaper. Our big cab TGS models are the same weight as our little cab FMs. I don't know what the lightest units are, I think our Volvo's with the newer trailers are the lightest that we have, around 12.4t empty

Hi Scott a little tip i did quite often to save you going up in a cadge to put straps over a hi loads in a curtain sider ! Put your straps over the load while the forklift has it on the ground and as he/she lifts the load in on the trailer then the straps are accessible to strap down mate !😎🇬🇧

That yard by the bus dismantlers and you tooted bye - what a crappy little horn you got back lol. Never been to Usk and had doubts - yeah it's bloody narrow lol. Great video, but would love to see more of the journey, camera seams to cut to cab just when something interesting comes along. How about picture in picture, then viewers will get the best of both worlds. It's horrible being the first driver of anything, trying hard not to scratch or ding them. I wish they had invented ratchet straps when I was driving. In those days it was ropes and chains, the pull downs could knock your block off if you didn't take care. we had to make all sorts of gizmos' to help secure the different loads carried. The one I most disliked was oxygen bottles, I had to go round the different sites picking up empty's, go to British Gas exchange them for full ones and drop them off at all the site around NE London. I made up wooden and steel wedges with nails attached to the bottom, the nails would bite into the trucks wooden deck and prevent slippage. Mind you the deck boards would look like swiss cheese after a while, so once a year the site chippy would replace the deck.

So typical about the roads over there, that the bushes are so damn close to the road. You won't see that too much here in NL, unless you are really in the middle of f-beep-ing nowhere. I don't understand why it's so common at your side of the pond, tho have the bushes and trees so extremely close to the roads. Must be horrible drying a truck there!
@nasa1985

Roy Brueren. This time of year the hedges have to be left alone for the sake of birds nesting. It’s a load of crap tbh and gets very frustrating if you like to keep the wagon you drive scratch free. I believe they can get cut again around the start of September. It’s not uncommon on lanes especially for the hedges to grow a good 2-3 feet out into the road. Personally I think it should be a law for all hedges to get cut regularly and well maintained for the sake of safety... as in visibility on what is already a narrow road, it would make reversing much easier/ safer if you could see anything other than a hedge in your mirror... also I care about the vehicle I drive and take pride in it’s cleanliness and over all appearance and having to drive through a hedge is just pure vandalism in my eyes.
@ACCORDriver_NL
@ACCORDriver_NL 5 жыл бұрын
@@nasa1985 Thank you for the explanation. And I can totally understand your frustration. I just don't get why the hedges, trees and bushes are that close to the road. Why not leave space between road and all that green...? Leave a bit of roadside, let's say a meter or so? Then it won't be such a problem when the hedges aren't cut (yet). 😉

If this video shows nothing else, it's the absurdity of allowing HGV's access to some wonderful country lanes. Scott shows no concern for this, not for the village architecture, the thatched cottages, the delicately arched bridges, or the trees many of which would have grown to maturity before his grandfather's era. Smaller vehicles carrying smaller loads is one alternative to the risks posed to our natural heritage by oversized vehicles tramping through places that were never built to cater for them. I'd be interested to know the extent of the damage caused and the costs involved to local councils in repairing it.
