Under well trained hands almost any musical instrument can sound pretty good. These hands are without question extremely well trained.

Beyond training, I think these two are some of the greatest musicians we'll ever have. I think they don't know this, so they keep improving ad infinitum.

The memory of these two young men is amazing! I've seen so many organ pieces played from memory by Jonathan and he always impresses me. But the two of them together is simply divine! Are they twins, perhaps? What proud parents they must have. Absolutely magnificent. The way they are so in 'sync' with each other is phenomenal! Thank you both for your entertaining musicianship! And...greetings from Victoria, British Columbia from an ex-Head Chorister of Leeds Minster in the mid- 1960's.

They're not twins; IIRC they're four or five years apart. The rapport they have when playing together does make me kind of wistful about being an only child, though. :)

Astonishing! Every time I watch and listen to one of your videos, I tell myself you cannot get better. And every time I am wrong. I swear that the two of you have mental telepathy! The precision and power that you bring out in this version serve the music so admirably! And that piano is an enigma. the sound definitely is not anything but what it is--a vintage upright--but WHAT an upright! And what a daring choice! No, what a daring series of choices: First, the piano duet transcription, then the instrument. My first listen was dominated by my astonishment at the precision and the piano. I have to listen again, to lose myself in the music. THANK YOU!

My guess is that piano is at Brodsworth Hall in Yorkshire a mansion built and fully furnished in the 1860's and now owned by English Heritage. Jonathan and Tom do periodic concerts at the Hall on the harmonium and I do wonder if this piano is part of the original house furnishings hence its survival. Possibly a Collard & Collard

I first came across this piece on an LP of Bach Organ Works played by Carl Weinrich. I was fascinated as a young boy by deliberately 'mis-hearing' the fugue subject by imagining the semiquavers out of synchronisation (i.e. shifted a semiquaver earlier). Even as a relatively old man I still get a kick out of trying to articulate the piece on the organ in such a way as to try to fox the congregation into believing that Bach actually wrote it like that deliberately! I like to think that Bach had a wicked sense of humour, and might have done something similar to subtly amuse his choristers, or make them trip up as they skip out of the service to this terrific tune!

A very interesting and imaginative presentation, wonderfully played. Piano transcriptions of organ works often fail to match the originals, but this one is a triumph. Many thanks. However ... the video raises an interesting questions in my mind. Just as the clock we hear is not the one we see, the piano (a Collard and Collard?) which must be pre-WW I, can surely not be the one we hear. If it is, the technician who restored it is every bit as remarkable as the pianists!
@marc49lewis7 жыл бұрын
I think it might just be "what you see is what you hear" in this case. Listen to the upper harmonics of the low bass strings. Somewhat typical of an upright's soundboard IMO. The restoration technician was indeed a master craftsman with a tremendous voicing ear, again IMO.

Interesting that piano is ancient and somewhat neglected (stuck top G) yet it sounds quite good, unisons quite good and so on. Not tinny and the bass has at least some life left. I think exemplary articulation is helping to control the very uneven action. I wonder what story it could tell us?

@epincion10 ай бұрын
Jahrhundert.

I would really like to know what the story of this piano is, it looks well aged and some of the keys are not quite perfect … so why choose to play such a grand masterpiece on this particular piano in this setting, is there some significance to this? Is this a family instrument or something? Please I’d really like to know! Bless both of you for this , just outstanding as always!

I don't agree. This nice upright piano sounds so nice, very clear and balanced in tone. A great piano is not always better in sound than an upright pisno! It depends also on the room/surrounding acoustics. A grand (depending on size, of course) can be sometimes far too loud for a living room!
