COMMENTS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Join myself and Welsh Greg as we embark on a gruelling 6 day adventure in which we attempt across Scotland in a completely straight line. In Part 2 you saw us continue day one's fine progress, successfully negotiating some pretty gnarly obstacles and talking our way out of a pickle with a concerned farmer. Now though, having made it to a lovely secluded clearing in the forest where we camped the night, it was time to ascend into the remote and stress free landscape of the moors and make as much ground as possible before camping the night. Sounds straight forward enough, but a seriously pissed off farmer had other ideas..

I think it was the fire that did for you, lads. Generally here in Scotland, wild camping is totally allowed, as long as you set up camp as it’s getting dark, leave as soon as it’s light, don’t camp on sight of a house, and don’t light a fire. I genuinely think the farmer might have left you alone if not for the fire.

The two big mistakes here were: 1. Camping out in the open and especially having a fire out in the open. So easy to spot. 2. Not moving the campsite as soon as they were spotted by the lady the first time. Oh well though, lessons learned for next time! It was ultimately the right decision to call it off after dealing with the cops. It wasn't worth the almost certain trouble if caught again. Still got some fantastic footage (I loved every minute!) and the failures make the successes that much sweeter!

Not moving on after the dogs was an easy mistake I guess, they thought they would be ok to camp there. But I don't quite understand what happened next. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to sleep after the second visit from the farmer himself. I'd have put the fire out and moved much further on. I agree with some of the other commenters about this feeling lack the least careful trip yet. I liked the first attempt across Wales when Tom would literally go into the middle of a thicket and camp without a fire because he was paranoid about being seen.

What happened was that somebody originally spotted you as you were walking and thought, "No big deal, they'll be gone shortly." Then the wife/dogs spotted you and thought, "No big deal, they'll be gone shortly." Then you were still there and the man and wife start talking to each other about it and it really starts to bother them that you are STILL there, setting up to stay the entire night. The man comes up and tells you off gently. Then, he goes back to his wife and they keep talking about it and he says, "I told them to bugger off in the morning," but they cannot stop thinking about it. And talking about it. It's the most excitement this old couple has had in months around their secluded farm. Maybe years. So, finally, just to be able to stop thinking about it, they decide to call the cops. Problem solved. They can sleep soundly. Wasn't necessary, but it was clear when she brought three dogs and then sent her husband that the wife was uneasy about it. Plenty of warning signs to move along.

Bear in mind that a couple of guys in fatigues skulking around at night says one thing to anybody living here.. poachers. They don't know if you are legit. You may have an illegal firearm, and be out to kill deer, hares, sheep, pheasants, calves or even nick their quad bike or break into the sheds or the farm. Believe me, it happens. I would be a little uneasy if you pitched up in the field behind my house. Fair enough if your car breaks down, or your a bunch of scouts on a twelve mile hike, but two scruffy blokes (sorry, but you did both look a little the worse for wear by that point), skulking around with a hair brained story that you are walking across the country in a straight line.. it does, you must admit, look just a little bit fishy. All the more so during lockdown.

the moment that quad drove off that's when you put out the fire, dismantle the tent, get the torch on and move a mile further along the line (without lighting another fire) and stealth camp the night. Hmm. That would be either Swedish or Russian line to be exact.. The Russian border is problematic btw as for some reason you´re not legally free to approach it like most other borders, so the mission would be cut short there at the latest by some few tens of meters. I´ve checked on google maps the other Russian borders and I´m not seeing similar border area restrictions anywhere else. Nobody has been able to explain to me why such restrictions apply between Russian/Finnish border. My theory is that it´s a psychological thing since Russians/Soviets stole most of the areas directly cross the border from Finland it keeps us from getting any ideas we should try get it back.

@@Nathankthanks And TBH it'd just be Norway 1.5 for any reasonable crossing point in mainland Finland which all are in the North. Less vertical cliffsides, more sludgy (possible deathtrap) marshes. Something like Åland would be pretty interesting and doable tho. Late spring or early fall might be best? Not all bushes are in full leaf yet/still. Would depend on how much island hopping it would include. Baltic in the spring can be pretty cold. May I suggest for the future: No tent. Maybe carry a tarp in the event of rain. And absolutely no fires. If you have to cook, just a tiny gas stove. If you're to be camping "illegally" on private land, you need to be more stealthy. Even if caught, landowners will care much less if you have a smaller impact.
@gavinjenkins899
@gavinjenkins899 3 жыл бұрын
It's not (other than COVID) illegal to camp on private land in Scotland. I mean I'm sure there's limits to staying there all month or whatever, but you can pass through without them having a right to kick you off if you're being normal. If they just go next year they shouldn't have to be stealthy

We did however, in our remote areas have huge influxes of people from more Covid high areas and have the right to be annoyed when we have hospitals that can take only a small amount of patients, in my area 6 max. Look at it this way, would you be happy if people arrived in your area, with a chance of covid, spread it and then took up a hospital bed that a family member of yours needed and died from it? Think you'd better understand the difference between a prick and a concerned person ;) Just sayin!

My guess is you were there twice and the farmer didn’t know you were scouting out the trip the first time so he was skeptical about letting you stay the night there just in case you were scouting them out to rob them. Which would be why when the police showed up one of the first things they mentioned was that you had been there twice.

To all the people commenting that they were allowed to camp there due to the "Right to Roam" law in Scotland, that's incorrect. The law specifically forbids camping / lighting fires in farmers fields meant for crops or animals, which this clearly was. I'm not saying I support the Irish farmers choice to call the cops, but I just keep seeing this comment about it 'being legal in Scotland' posted over and over again, and it's simply not true.
