With a few days of spare time, I went on a singlehanded Wayfarer adventure around the Inner Hebrides, starting from Craobh Haven and heading up to Loch Aline, Tobermory and back.

Today, every stroll with a sailing boat is called adventure. In most Western languages. When I was young, adventure was something envolved with danger.

This smaller sailboat is very simple and beautiful. I followed some other channels with cruising sailboats but like this type the best.

Nice boat! Having come of age in Penguins, Lightnings, and 210s, I like chines! And I like Wayfarers! She needs a proper chute, though, a real chute. Here's an idea...buy a used Lightning chute. Have your sailmaker take 6" off each edge and then resew the tapes. See how it works on your boat. You can always cut a little more off next winter, if necessary. I bet you'll soon love your new, powerful chute. You'll be flying!

Thank you! I'm quite happy with the Wayfarer spinnaker - I think it's the right balance between being having power in light wind, but still being able to use it in a controlled manner when the wind picks up. I've tried a larger one (from a 505) in another Wayfarer in a trip where we had a lot less wind (see here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/armamKZhy8nReaM.html&lc=UgzuVexHe37sRWn6KKN4AaABAg), but that was a fairly rare set of weather conditions to be out in!

really nice videos. I'm wondering , is it easy to right the wayfarer in solo if you capsize ? Thank you

Thank you! Yes, I can do it on my own quite comfortably. I make sure I'm never in a position where I might capsize when I'm cruising though - the boat and all the gear onboard would be fine, but dunking the outboard would be expensive! So I make sure I sail according to the conditions.

Jonathan: More questions on your set up! I notice that you wear a safety line ready to clip on to the boat if needs be. Could you please give a few details of how it is set up please? How do you attach it to yourself and, at the other end, to the boat? Is there an associated harness which is part of your life jacket or is it a separate item? The line seems quite short - is it coiled up in some way to keep it from fouling things? A question on your spinnaker stowage. Do you deploy the sail from a special launch bag or is it just from your average spinnaker stowage bag?

Hi Jonathan. I only use the tether at night on offshore passages, where if one crew fell overboard the other might never find them. The rest of the time, it would probably be more dangerous to use it for risk of entrapment/getting tangled etc. The spinnaker is just kept in a normal bag- I don't need to launch it in a hurry. Great to watch! Could I ask you what type of device you use as a chartplotter? Do you have an electrical supply for it on the boat? I sail a Wayfarer single handed too. You make un anchoring look easy but I usually struggle with it. Any tips?

It's an android tablet in a rugged waterproof case. It's not ideal as the screen's a little dim in the daylight, but I have backups on phones as well. I have a 12V leisure battery which I can charge all my devices from over several days, and I can charge that up in marinas. The best advice I have for anchoring is to stop the boat. Sounds obvious, but throwing the anchor out while the boat's still going forwards is a recipe for disaster! Bring the boat to a stop, head to wind/current, ideally drifting very slowly backwards. Then just lower the anchor over the side. Sometimes I'll throw it a short distance so that I swing to one side or the other. Obviously there's a lot to consider with where to anchor as well... Hope that helps!
