Music is “Childhood” by Scott Buckley
Kirstie Alley was born on January 12, 1951, in Wichita, Kansas. Her career breakthrough came when she landed her feature-film debut in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). She followed the part with a major role in the TV miniseries "North and South." But it wasn't until she was selected to replace Shelly Long in the popular sitcom "Cheers" in the late 1980s that Alley's rise to stardom began.
After studying drama at Kansas State University, Alley moved to California and became an interior decorator. Lured by the party lifestyle, she started abusing drugs for some time. In 1981, tragedy struck when her parents' car was hit by a drunk driver, killing her mother and seriously injuring her father.
Alley underwent drug rehabilitation and embraced Scientology, a religious belief created by the writer L. Ron Hubbard. At the same time, she struggled to land acting parts, first appearing on television game shows such as "Match Game and Password Plus." Her career breakthrough came when she landed her feature-film debut as Saavik, a Vulcan student, in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). She followed the part with a major role in the television miniseries "North and South." But it wasn't until the late 1980s, when she was selected to replace Shelly Long in the popular sitcom "Cheers," that her rise to stardom began.
Alley earned a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her portrayal of the neurotic and high-strung Rebecca Howe in 1990. During her years on "Cheers," Alley's film career also took off. She showcased her dramatic talent in the 1988 thriller Shoot to Kill and had her first box-office hit with the comedy Look Who's Talking (1989).
After "Cheers" bid farewell in 1993, Alley experienced some career highs and lows. She won an Emmy Award for the television movie David's Mother in 1994 and starred in the NBC sitcom "Veronica's Closet" in 1997, but the show received mixed reviews. That same year, however, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her supporting role in the dramatic miniseries "The Last Don."
In 2005, Alley starred in Showtime's Fat Actress, an unscripted comedy about the media's obsession with celebrity weight. She also shared her personal experiences with weight loss in her 2005 book How to Lose Your Ass and Regain Your Life. Her publicized struggles with weight loss led her to team up with Jenny Craig weight loss centers. She served as a Jenny Craig spokesperson until December 2007.
Alley signed a deal with Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions in March 2008 to develop television projects. During that year, however, she made more headlines for her changing body shape than her professional efforts. Alley regained the weight she lost while on the Jenny Craig program. She told People magazine in May 2009 that she "fell off the horse" and would have to "work harder than last time" to slim down. She then hired a trainer to help her meet this goal and developed the Organic Liaison weight loss system.
In March 2010, Alley starred in an A&E real-life television series, "Kirstie Alley's Big Life." The series chronicled her weight loss journey and life as a single mother trying to raise two teenagers in Hollywood.
In 2011, Alley competed on the 12th season of ABC's reality TV dance competition "Dancing with the Stars." With partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, she placed second on the show, losing to Hines Ward and Ward's partner, Kym Johnson. In 2012, Alley was invited back to "Dancing with the Stars" for the show's 15th season, "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars."
Alley was married to actor Parker Stevenson from 1983 to 1997. They have two adopted children, William True and Lillie Price.
Alley died from stage 4 colon cancer, discovered in May 2022 after a doctor’s visit for a sore back. Despite chemotherapy treatments at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, she died at her home in Clearwater on December 5, 2022, at the age of 71. Kirstie Alley was cremated , no funeral details were released, and she is apparently going to be laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

I had a brief interaction with her on Twitter several years ago. I had commented on a post of hers during a rough patch I was going through. She reached out to me and was just so kind and loving and even gave me some resources for places I could get some help. Even with her personal beliefs re: psychiatry and anti depressants she never judged me or tried to push Scientology, she only wanted to help. I was so moved that this beautiful woman who I had always enjoyed in film (heck yeah thanks for the Summer School love Scott!) and television took the time to reach out to me when so many others in my life had turned their back. She will be missed.

@@annarumming-pain6048 Right? Diane Keaton is still lovely, and she’s 77. My mom is 76 & she’s healthier than I and has an athletic figure…unlike mine , but there’s nothing wrong with being big either, though my mom inspires me to get healthy! She was in the paper because she still bicycles to work for exercise. I don’t think any harm was done or intended by the comment. I used to dread getting older. Now I see so many beautiful older women and am not concerned. If you have your health, you have it all! If you don’t, you have a lived experience you can use to help and support others in your boat. And you can still be beautiful. My grandma was glamorous til her last day, and she was chronically ill since her 30s. My mom just likes comfy clothes she can move in and is beautiful 🤩.

I literally just found out! I’m in the recovery field and it’s always so sad when people beat their addiction, and pass shortly thereafter. Kirstie wasn’t very young though, so there’s no way to know if her struggle with cocaine was even a factor. My man had a great NA sponsor who saw him through to a better life, and a job in Substance Use Disorder treatment. His sponsor died at 60, of a heart attack…had used cocaine for a long time, but it was all in the past. I’m glad Kirstie had some years to enjoy life in recovery. People work so hard for it, I wish you could turn back the clock and undo the damage. But if we could, we wouldn’t have people with lived experience to share, to help others. Kirstie did that! ❤😇

@@sciencenotstigma9534 no all BTK crimes are around the Wichita, Kansas area. If Your family is around Seattle your right there are a plethora of serial killers from that area. Ted Bundy, Green River Killer to name a couple and of course the biggest hotspot is California particularly the Bay Area region alone. The Golden State Killer, Edmond Kemper, The Zodiac killer (never found) , John Frazier, Herbert Mullin. And your right serial killers usually flourish around woods and water as they are often secluded and make good dumping grounds. But good old BTK and Jeffery Dahmer were hiding in plain sight here in the Midwest.

Such a nice tribute. Her energy was intoxicating. Loved how outspoken she was and how passionate she was on everything she believed in and loved. It was always fun when something new popped up that Kirstie said and that will be missed. Her energy and passion and the person she was, will be missed.

The death of four celebrities shocked, and saddened, me more than any others. They were Lucille Ball, Elvis, Glenn Frye and Kirstie. I was born in downtown Clearwater and i'm still in the area. The fort Harrison hotel at 0:55 is owned by scientology and it is where the rolling stones stayed and wrote the song I can't get no satisfaction when they were in town doing a concert. That concert has some history as they only played a few songs when the kids rushed the stage and the band had to flee.

Kirstie grew up here in Wichita, KS. She owned two large Victorian homes that sat right beside each other. One she lived in and the second one she turned into a huge oversized kitchen and a place to entertain friends. Her homes were a few doors down from an interior decorating shop that my sister manages and she would see Kirstie quite frequently. Very nice lady.

Kirstie was a beautiful woman, I will always remember being allowed to stay up late as a child watching Cheers as a kid with my family, The Summer School movie was great. Then her in Look who Talking movies were big with us. She always was so hot, even as she gained the weight. She was always up and down with her weight problems, but she fought her ass off. Our political veiws are the same on American politics, and I saw her on Fox News expressing her views. Thanks, Scott, for not sharing your political veiws, its so toxic in this country and its pushed down our throats constantly. I'll admit, I am a diehard Trump Supporter and was a Democrat before he ran. I just ain't ever fight with someone cause they see things differently from me. RIP Kirstie, beautifully done, Scott!

Thank you Scott for telling about Kirstie. She was so pretty. Loved her hair, so thick and so much of it and she could do anything with her hair and it looked pretty. My favorite episode of Cheers was when she was trapped inside the rich guy's closet and couldn't get out of his bedroom. 😅 Gosh she was pretty and powerful and confident.
