James Albert Varney, Jr. was born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nancy Louise (Howard) and James Albert Varney, Sr. He became interested in theater as a teenager, winning state titles in drama competitions while a student at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky. At age 15 he played Ebeneezer Scrooge in a local children's theater production of "A Christmas Carol", and by 17 was performing professionally in nightclubs and coffee houses. He chose Nashville rather than New York or Los Angeles as a place to pursue his acting career and, with advertising executive John R. Cherry III, turned "Ernest P. Worrell" into a cash cow, making commercials for clients ranging from soft drinks to food stores and, eventually, Disney. Even though Ernest's catchphrase "KnowhutImean?" became a national craze almost immediately, Jim worked in TV and film for more than a decade before his famous alter-ego hit the big screen in Ernest Goes to Camp (1987).
Building on the successful performance of the first two Ernest movies, Varney made three more with Disney; five others were released independently, largely for television markets. The series eventually included Ernest Goes to Jail (1990), Ernest Rides Again (1993), Ernest Goes to School (1994) and Ernest in the Army (1998).
Varney's first film in a lead role other than Ernest was the 1993 big-screen version of the comedy TV series Beverly Hillbillies, in which he played Jed Clampett. He also lent his distinctive voice to the character of Slinky Dog in the blockbuster animated features Toy Story (1995) and Toy Story 2 (1999).
In 1998, Varney was diagnosed with lung cancer. He subsequently underwent surgery to remove most of his right lung, followed by radiation treatments. Varney publicly disclosed his battle with cancer in 1999, but continued to work, filming his last project, Daddy and Them (2001), starring and directed by Billy Bob Thornton. He died on February 10, 2000, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 50.
He was buried in Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, Kentucky.

My mother owned a restaurant in Ridgetop called Granny's Kitchen back in the late 80s and Jim would always stop by when he was in the area and get him some of my mom's home made corn dogs. as a matter of fact, i still have a picture of him, hugged up to a waitress holding up one of the corn dogs.. i also remeber going to the cinema when we had one here in Springfield to watch Ernest Goes to Camp. One of the things I admired about Jim is even though he was a chain smoker he never smoked around women and children, and even when he was sick battling cancer he would still.visit the children's hospitals dressed up as Ernest and Visit the kids and their families. Unfortunately he never had any kids of his own but he did have a nephew who he treated as his own and his nephew a few years back wrote a book about Jim and went on a few podcasts and just said nothing but great things about Jim and how he changed the face of culture as we know it.

I was at Twitty City, Conway Twitty's estate, for one of its annual open to the public Christmas celebrations as a kid & in one of the rooms we walked by was Jim Varney & Tom T. Hall playing piano & singing Christmas carols. It was before "Beverly Hillbillies", but I'm not sure how many movies he'd done by then? He was mostly known in Nashville as Earnest from his Purity Dairy commercials. He wasn't in character of course, but he was really nice & they both gave me an autograph. ✌🌎❤

Circa 1998, when Varney first learned of his cancer, I heard that when he found out from his doctor that he had cancer, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his cigarettes, and threw them in the wastebasket. He was visibly shaking and was just staring at the pack of cigarettes for a minute, almost in disbelief. He never smoked another cigarette again. I don't remember where I heard that, and I was very young at the time, but it's something that has always stuck with me. I think one of the reasons was because Ernest P. Worrell was one of the first (if not the very first) childhood celebrity that I watched all the time, that had passed away.

It doesn't seem that long ago that we lost him. Sometimes it feels like only yesterday when he passed. I can still see his face and hear the sound of his voice from time to time when I stop to think about him. He was magic. I don't say this about everyone I write about. He made me laugh. His smile and his humor got me through some really tough times. I'm not a very religious person. I do appreciate the sentiment on the front of his tombstone. It shows his sensitive nature for children. Thanks for sharing this video with us. Rest in Paradise Jim Varney, you helped make the world a happier place. 🌈🕊️💖

My little brother dearly loved watching "Ernest" movies (over and over and over.) My mother always said "A little Ernest goes a long way," but Jim Varney really made a lot of people happy. I honestly didn't know he had passed away. Thanks for this.

I remember watching his movies with my children. We had been waiting for his next movie in anticipation. But it never came … I wondered “Where is he”? That’s when we discovered the loss of this great man. We have a collection of his movies and just loved him!

Jim was such a unique and memorable character. He was featured in commercials for Cerritos Auto Square here in Southern California, and he was the perfect choice to play Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies movie. It's always hard for an actor to step into a role made famous by another, but I think Jim played Jed as impressively in the movie as Buddy Ebsen did in the TV series. It was sad that Jim passed at a relatively young age. Another awesome video, Scott.
