I would just finger the palm key D & D# and then add the E side key. Those are all regular palm key fingerings. D# to E could be tough if you were trying it with a front E, but if you play the palm key E then D# to E is pretty smooth and easy.

Oh wow, that does work decently... slightly sharp I think, but that seems to come with most if not all alternate fingerings

Hey Joesph, they will make some impossible licks very easy. It takes a little getting use to them at first, but once you've got them it will make playing fast so much easier!

It's all about skill. My gear helps me achieve the sound I want, but I pretty much sound the same on anything I play. It all comes down to breath support and the speed of your air. My air is moving very very fast in a super tight stream aimed directly in the middle of my mouthpiece. That's what gives me such a big and bright crisp sound. As I slow that air down it gets more mellow. Also, my articulations are really clean and I am doing something to almost every note which makes the phrases sound cleaner like it has direction. The way I tell my students to think about phrases is they are setting up goal notes. The goal notes are the destination. Every other note is either going to that goal note or coming from it. jackhsu87阿靈師師的 I know this is an old comment, but if you’re still wondering I can explain. “Faster air” is always a misleading phrase even though it’s a true one. Faster air does NOT mean pushing air out of your lungs at a faster rate. It means the path of travel for the air coming out of your lungs is thinner. Faster air =smaller hole, or in this case, your inner mouth cavity and throat. If you think of your body as part of the saxophone it may make more sense. The most efficient way to achieve this kind of sound is to transcribe players that have this kind of sound and try to sound exactly like them, and while you’re doing this, experiment with this smaller air stream concept. Scott has transcribed a lot of Charlie Parker and this is a good place to start. I started to find a similar sound when I really dig into CP and Cannonball Adderly but don’t stop there. I also noticed a dramatic change in my sound when I started digging into the altissimo range because having a smaller faster air stream helps those notes pop.

Yeah, that 1 and 1 doesn't sound very good on the sax. I use side Bb all the time, but a lot of "jazz guys" use Bis almost exclusively

I've only used one my entire saxophone life. The Shure Clip on mic. I think it goes for around $150. It's the standard when it comes to clip on mics. With wireless mics there are a lot more options.

Hey! Yeah, that Fork F# and Side C will definitely speed you up and clean you up as you get use to it. I can't even begin to tell you how many times a student of mine thought a passage of music was impossible until I reminded them of the correct fingerings to use. Agree with the front F and E being a great way to get into altissimo. Personally I use the front F way more going up, but use both of them a lot coming back down. Glad you're liking the videos!!

Sammy Baez Yeah, I noticed he was wrong ( I think lol ) about that. I have friends in band that have beginner instruments with high f# keys. You find it on pros and some lower quality horns as well.

Yep. True. The new cheap horns are made to look just like the pro horns. Funny enough some sounds almost as the pro horns as well.lol

Hey Juan! Thanks!! If your C# is that out of tune, chances are you need a trip to the repair man. Something is either opening to much or not enough, or it has something to do with the gear that you are using.

Both of those keys are F# keys. The lower one is for the normal range of the sax. The upper one is for your high F# (3 palm keys or front F). No, that C doesn't sound the same as a regular C. You're getting an overtone. It's cool from some improv stuff, but not for playing a regular C

I didn't realize that! It's been a while since I've played a vintage sax. So if I finger a G# by using the C# (or B, Bb key) what happens? Does it just come out as a weird sound or is it just a G because the G# key isn't pressed?

Just a G. Idea for some next video, get a vintage sax(with forked Eb, old left pinky table, etc) and talk about how advanced ergonomics have todays instruments.

I can't speak to others but I play a Conn New Wonder series 1 tenor from 1924. On that instrument, you just get a g. One of them, if you hold the c#, changes pitch slightly. This instrument has a g/g# trill key between the f and e keys. Pressing that undoes the g# key. On a modern instrument is that trill key still there?

@@DM-sl9hp I have that same sax. You just get used to slipping your little finder over fast. Playing modern saxes will spoil you. At this point I feel I will end up with modern saxes and may as well sell the vintage stuff. Already sold my MkVI's and Gibson jazz guitar. Too paranoid to play them in public. Too many people here get their equipment stolen when you turn your back or even leave them in the trunk when you go for a quick bite to eat. People are evil. It sucks but most people just hear "the sound of a saxophone" or whatever. My ex-girlfriend heard Miles Davis playing and said "he plays sax well doesn't he?" I almost died.

Your C# key is sticking, which is a pretty common problem. You need to physically open the key with your fingers. It's the 3rd key down from the top of the bell. When you pull it open, you'll hear it the sticky sound as you pull it open.

That front E isn't a very stable note, that's why you hear growls often times when people use it. For the Still Rock solo, try going from the palm key E to the front F. It's a pretty standard fingering. That's probably how I would play it. I use the front E more coming down from an F than going up to an F.

Both. The fingerings are very similar, but the embouchure is completely different. However, with the breath support it takes to play a flute, you should have no problem on a sax.

Hey Tim, that's actually a fairly common problem. The front E is not that stable of a note, especially when you are going to it without a close setup note.

@@ScottPaddock Thx! I discovered, if I orient my lips and jaw just right it will work then, but only a little. I guess I'll just not use it then. Front F# (no F# key) has always been a problem. At times I can get something out, but it is faint. Blows my mind how some guys can hit that then High G, G#, and even an A. Maybe I need a professional sax for that. I just have a Yamaha YAS 23 Student model.

Yeah, on some horns that fingering is WAY out of tune.

I think if you try your b key and your f# key that might work a bit better, but I might be remembering wrong

Also, even the slightest amount of drop in breath pressure and it breaks.

It's not a very stable note on the sax, and I use it mostly when coming down from an F, but there are also tweaks your sax tech can do to your horn to make it respond better. But I always think as the front E as a go between note.

I need to move my bottom lip out to get the alt high E. On my sax the alt high E sounds better than the regular high E, so I use it most of the time. Only coming from high D do I still use reg high E. I wish there was an alt high D and Eb, so I could just be done with those palm keys.

It definitely makes life a little easier.

The reason you are getting the overtone is probably because your tongue is to high. Especially if you are jumping to that note. Concentrate on getting your tongue flat in your mouth for the middle D in the AAAAAAYYYY position. That should help a lot.

@@ScottPaddock Idk, it didn't start doing this until on the way to a Band Clinic it fell off the seat on the bus and I couldn't play D2 or Eb2 and I shipped it off to get it fixed and when I got it back, it was fine and then it just started over toning.

Logan one of the rods probably got bent and there was a leak, if it happens again check to see if the keys are fully covering the holes

That's true. Vintage saxes don't have all of the same keys as the more modern ones. Mainly the high F# key.
