Glad it helped you!!! It's funny, this video didn't get nearly as many views as I thought it would. KZfaq has a mind of its own! I'm just going to keep cranking out good content.

Hi Scott. Discovered your channel quite recently as a fairly new sax player (since February) and love what you do. I have no background of music theory, so your explanations are really helpful. There is one thing I think I have misunderstood from your videos though. When you demonstrated improvising over Take the A Train, I think you talked about starting the A major scale on the 5th note (E to go with the E7 chord) as the A mixolydian, which made sense. However, when you did that cool Cannonball Aderley lick, you said it was based on the G mixolydian, when I thought it would be the mixolydian mode of the C major scale, where the G is the 5th note. Where am I going wrong? By the way, do you know what your time difference to the UK is, if I was thinking of Skype lessons? Thanks

Playing the A Major Scale, starting on the fifth note (E), would mean you are playing E Mixolydian - which is indeed the fifth mode (mixolydian mode) of A Major. Similarly, G Mixolydian is the mixolydian mode of the C Major Scale. Does help help clarify? If not, keep asking ... you may have just misheard something at some point ... Cheers, Be well!

Hey Martin - both are correct here's why. 1. The mixolydian scale comes from the 5th degree of the major scale. By playing a major scale starting on the 5th degree you will get a FLAT 7th. Example E7 coming from the A major scale. This is just the explanation of where scale comes from. Not how you functionally use it when reading chord symbols. So when you read an E7 all you need to think is E scale with a FLAT 7th. 2. When reading a chord symbol like G7. They are tell you to play G mixolydian which is a G major scale with a FLAT 7. That's what the 7 in G7 means. So when you see G7 they are taking away the step of figuring out where that mixolydian scale comes from (C major) and just telling you the chord/scale they wanted played over that chord symbol. A more simple explanation - when you see a chord symbol they are telling you exactly what they want, and not referring to it by where it came from. Does that make more sense?

@@kierenmoore3236 Thanks Kieren. Now I see the link between the mode and the scale, it makes more sense.

@@ScottPaddock Thanks Scott. I had assumed the mixolydian mode and scale were the same thing. Now you have explained how they are related I understand why the mode and scale appear to be different keys. Your explanation in relation to chords is a big help, as I have a better practical understanding of what scale to use with a 7th chord. Great advice - keep up the excellent work.

Hey Scott, I am very impressed by your tone and brightness of your Saxophone. I am curious of what brand Saxophone you have, your mouthpiece, and ligature. I am currently first alto saxophonist in the top jazz band, first alto/tenor/bari in the top concert band, and I’m also in our state fair all time record holding marching band at Noblesville High School.

Hey Scott. I jut discovered your lessons and am really enjoying them. Thanks! I do have a question, though. In this video, you use the terms "Quality" and "Flavor". In regard to both terms, you talk about whether the chord is major or minor so I really don't understand the distinction. Could you clarify what you mean by each word for me?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 5 жыл бұрын
In my examples "QUALITY" refers to the 3rd degree (which determines major or minor), and the flavor refers to the 7th (which could mean major, minor/dominant. or diminished).

It was pretty hard to find this video after watching the previous chord video.... perhaps that’s why it’s got fewer likes than expected.
