Replaced the condenser on my 2015 Silverado. Same story as yours. Went to Chevy dealership and was told they’re on back order. Comes with a 3 Year warranty. I knew a young man that told me his air conditioning was not working, so he took it to the same shop that installed a used set of ring and pinion gears in my pickup without telling me, so just for the heck of it he scratches his initials on the bottom side of the ac compressor, He gets his car back from the shop and the air conditioning is now working ( for 360.00 ) they had to replace the ac compressor , it was all pretty with a new paint job but his initials were still on the bottom of the compressor :)

Where are you supposed to capture the evacuated Freon? It is illegal to just dump it; as you know. The last system that failed on my 90 Geo Storm had to be properly done. I'm not doing a full replacement including the compressor etc. It cost $1,500 for the job. I told the dealer not to fill it with the wrong refrigerant or it won't work. They tried and got caught! They ate the cost of evacuation and fill done by a A/C shop. Now it works like factory new.

@sprint48219
@sprint48219 Жыл бұрын
If you have a nonworking system most of the time the refrigerant has already leaked out all you are doing is creating a vacuum so that you can reinstall refrigerant without having air in there to mess up the system If it won’t hold the vacuum then you’re finding a leak under vacuum when you have to look around and see if you can spot where you have what looks like an oil stain on a line or something or possibly use dye and a black light If you can’t find anything let it run and let the water drip out of the evaporator and hit that with the black light and if you see the dye in the water then you got a problem because most evaporators are an SOB to change Scotty has forgotten more than I know but I have picked up a little over the years Keep it up Scotty !

I’ve seen mechanics say a compressor was bad without checking the compensating valve or knowing it had one. I picked up a “worn out “ compressor and swapped the compensating valve out and it worked perfectly. Harrison Delphi V5!!

Scotty we all need you mate!!!! I just had my aircon serviced on my Vito van and instead of 800g of gas she was down to 350 so the air was coolish but certainly not cold. So following a long hot drive home I decided to have her done and as you can imagine the difference is amazing!! You did not mention in this video that you should also change the cabin filter from time to time, mine was filthy so now the smell is much improved AND I cleaned out the vents using a can with a very long flexible hose. Thanks again!!! Simon

I picked up a dozen cans of R-134 at Wal-Mart for $4.44 / can. Now it's $8.88. Prob still a good price. R-410 for the house was $150 / 25 lbs a few years ago, now it's $600!

Great Video..I'm shocked my Grannies old Reliant K car AC ran 20 years after I changed compressor and converted it to R134 and never pulled the vacuum on the system...guess older cars had more leeway to f up and still work...It also unknowingly ran on 1 quart of engine oil for a month and still was running after I sold it 10 years later

I haven’t been in a shop for a long time now. Haven’t done a/c in about as long. But best I can remember from training about the history of refrigerants was something like this: early refrigerants were highly flammable, it’s replacement was eating the ozone, it’s replacement was a greenhouse gas more potent then methane by 400 times, and it’s replacement was flammable again. Or something like that. LOL can’t win.

It does matter though, the ozone destroying chemicals are bad, restricting those has seriously helped.

Scotty, what about the line pack amount …. the refrigerant that fills the line before any goes into the car. Doesn’t a certain amt of weight have to be accounted for to fill the line before you can measure the weight that entered the car’s system?
@chaimafaghet7343
@chaimafaghet7343 2 жыл бұрын
He started weighing after he purged the air from the line, therefore all measured weight went into the system.

Scotty are you advocating venting an existing that is low on refrigerant and then evacuation via vacuum, or only evacuate on an almost empty system where the low pressure protection prevents the compressor clutch from engaging? People don't realize that vehicles "air conditioning systems" are not true air conditioning like your house. They are in fact High temperature Freezer Systems because of the heat load and poor insulation of a vehicle. True air conditioner would never cool it for comfort in a vehicle. I bought a 30 pound cylinder 6 months ago and my cost was outrageous even at wholesale. I am glad you took the time to show people. Shops have gotten out of hand along with every other industry in the world today with prices. It isn't going to be able to sustain it for much longer.

Scotty, I started the process you recommended because my AC isn’t very cold anymore. Anyway I purchased the AC gauges you recommended. When I connected the high and low side it shows pressure. I assume this is the remaining refrigerant that has not leaked out yet. What do I do with this? Do I vacuum it out and where does it go? Also what pressure should I be looking for when vacuuming? How do you know when it’s done?

Thanks Scotty, after seeing ALL the ac videos from you and other famous diy KZfaqrs. Im gonna go this route. My brother is a bus garage mechanic and can help me empty the old freon and recycle it from my system. Question: My 2010 forester sticker cites compressor oil DH-PR. Should I just pour that oil in the line with the air between the freon can and manifold gauges?
