If you buy/drive a crv of this era, take the plunge and replace all the suspension bushings, they ride amazing when working right. Get the valves adjusted. Change fluids. (Honda MTF for good manuals, GM Syncro-mesh only if its grinding. Use the honda stuff for the rear diff if a 4wd) You can get a disc conversion for these as well using prelude parts. CEL codes at this point are going to be p0420 for old cat (you can use a defouler if not EPA). Most go about 250k before needing major work. The 99-01 models are more desirable with more horsepower, and slightly better interior plastics. Relays are the most common no crank fix irl. These 1st gen crvs are the only ones with double-wishbone suspension, (almost) the same as the integra. Which is why fixing the handling is so worthwhile. Hope this helps someone.

I prefer the 2003+ CRV's. The engine has a timing chain, which means no maintenance except on time quality oil changes. Those older CRV have belts with interference engines, if it breaks, get ready for a engine swap.

Oh a little trick I used on my 98 CRV to fix a worn keyhole. Take a pencil and scratch off some graphite flakes onto a piece of paper. Then try to get the graphite flakes into the keyhole. In fact put some on the key while your at it. Insert the key and remove it a couple of times to get the graphite to settle in all the nooks and crannies. Turn the key too a couple of times. And viola! The key works like new! I only had to do it once too, so it works as a long term if not permanent fix! I learned it from my aunt's husband who taught me a lot about how to fix my own cars. Any problem I ever had somehow he knew exactly how to fix it.

In 1996 I was in the market for a small SUV. I looked at what I thought was the 2 most viable options, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. After test driving both, I chose the Honda. It is the best vehicle I ever had! I still have it and it's my daily driver. It has over 289k miles and still runs smooth. I do most of the maintenance because the engineering of this vehicle made it easy to access all drainage and refill points, for oil and fluids. Just like the vehicle Scott featured, my CR-V interior, especially the seats is like new. Scott knows good engineered vehicles.

Yeah, I own a 1999 Honda CR-V, now with 182,000 miles on it. I bought 8 years ago from a family friend for $2,500 when it had 125,000 miles. It runs well but I did need to replace a few things ... radiator, catalytic converter, rear struts. Yes, it's got a few dings and the paint is fading, but I expect to get my money out of that car for years to come.

My 1997 CR-V with pretty much the same mileage (480,000 km) is 3 years older and is still working perfectly fine. Changed rotors, calipers, resonator mid-pipe, mufflers, starter, etc. like what I had expected from a 23 year-young SUV but nothing else unexpected went wrong, except the ignition switch that caused it to stall while on the road. Not even that, I just got a letter from Honda Canada saying that there is a pending recall on the airbag so I'll be getting a brand airbag soon :)

I paid $3,200 for a 2006 Civic with 205,000 miles on it. The engine was replaced at 81,000 miles by Honda due to a recall. So, the motor had 124,000 on it and pretty much everything had 205,000. I've had it almost 4 years and put 60,000 miles on it. The only repair so far is a new starter (which was a PITA). If it blows up tomorrow, I got my money's worth on it.

I have a '99 CR-V with 361,000 on it. Still my daily driver. The only major work I've done to it was a valve job. Those 1st gen. engines had soft valve seats, and if you didn't keep the lash adjusted, it would decrease until the exhaust valve(s) burned. Even if you did, you would eventually run out of adjustment. To compound this problem, the owner's manual states the adjustment interval as "100,000 miles". Come to find out, it only states this in the U.S. version. All others say 30,000 if memory serves. Anyway I've had it for 15 years and it's been a great car, and since I hit a deer 2 years ago (right after cancelling my comprehensive insurance), it's officially a beater! Love your channel Scotty!

Same for my '01. Dealer serviced, never a value lashing adjustment despite service bulletins advising every 30K. Honda wouldn't fix it, said the car was too old. Found a independent Honda shop that took care of it. After the rebuild, she's a keeper.

The last owner seemed to look after it mostly except a few dents here and there but it is an excellent car and I've been really enjoying it. Hi Scotty, I'm a recent subscriber to your excellent channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! A family friend of ours is an old school mechanic like yourself and he has a 1990's Honda Civic as his daily driver. He keeps performing standard maintenance on it and has also completed some performance upgrades over the years like boring out the cylinders. It has well over 300,000 miles on it, gets close to 50mpg and I believe he said it ran 12 second quarter miles at our local drag strip when he brought it there on a whim. To further illustrate your points, several other people I know have had Honda's and Toyota's with 250+k to 300k miles before they got rid of their vehicles. Awesome channel and thanks again!

It has zero mechanical issues, no scratches or dents, Absolutely everything works as it should. They even added an aftermarket stereo, a remote starter and an LED bar to it a few years ago. When I bought it, the timing belt had been replaced only 5K ago! It was great in the snow already then I put a set of studded Nokians on it and now it's Canadian winter beast! I sometimes can't believe my CRV is 24 years old. I can't say enough good things about these CRVs, they are definitively among the best AWD cheap cars you can get.
