Got to love old CIS fuel system. Mechanical fuel injectors are a monster! Ethanol gas is hell on these engines! Been there done that. Scotty... Your adjustment with the 3mm Allen does work in some cases. However, If the cold start injector is bad it can cause an awful lot of problems on first starts and even after the engine is warm. Leaking mechanical fuel injectors too. They can make it so rich the engine won't even start. So much that you can pull the dip stick and smell the gas in the oil. Loved watching the video.

Funny you mention old iron. My shop called me over an old 60's vintage 455 Olds engine they couldn't get to run. The distributor vacuum advance blew it's bellows so the timing wouldn't advance. They didn't even know what a mechanical vacuum advance even was and thought it skipped time. Swapped out the part and it fixed it right up, a cheap fix. Someone who owned an old 442 was very happy. LOL

There's a lot to be said for old school mechanics like you Scotty! They are worth their weight in GOLD! My Dad has been an auto mechanic his whole life. He's a little older than you Scotty. But I tell ya, that man can diagnose and fix almost ANY mechanical problem and make the necessary repairs for the cost of the parts. He's old school. He diagnoses by his senses, smell, sight, sound, etc. Many of the new mechanics (not all, but a LOT) would be LOST without their diagnostic scan tool. Now, to be fair, most modern cars absolutely have to be diagnosed with a diagnostic scan tool due to the vast amount of electronics and computers on board. But many problems can still be diagnosed the old school way. Most new mechanics would say "Oh, I don't know how to do that" or "They never taught me how to do that in mechanics school!". Thanks for being an honest tester. Happy Holidays sir!

Back in the day when our cars had carburetors on a really cold day sometimes we would just spray some starter fluid in there and it would fire up. Occasionally we had to do it twice. To clean them you just needed an old toothbrush and some Gumout. Do that three or four times a year and you really didn't have many problems with it starting or running rough.

I could haul my boat stuff, actually a 14-foot hunting skiff, around in my old '59 Chevy. It stuck out two feet passed the tailgate. If you cannot find 505 CRF, try Chevron's Techron. Those K-Jetroniks have a dedicated injector for cold start. It probably does not work properly as well. Enriching the mixture while the engine is cold is also a responsibility of additional system which needs a check-up. It is also unusual the entire system went lean. They normally go rich and you regulate them back to lean side. Anyway, long life to that w124 and it’s owner. :)

Great video Scotty, I‘m still driving my 1974 VW Superbug the I purchased in 1982. The problem is that I’m now too old and unwell to work on it myself and finding a mechanic here in Sydney Australia that knows what to do and understands how to tune twin carbs is rare. I’m down to the last workshop that I can trust. Vintage Vee Dub Supplies is almost the last man standing in town. Every other garage with young people are clueless when it comes to basic mechanical repairs on older cars. The don’t know how to repair, only how to replace parts with new. Panel beaters are the same, replacing panels rather than repairing. Thanks for he informative and intersecting videos - I really enjoy your common sense and practical skills and knowledge.

Old Mercedes are infamous for plugged up outlet screens in the fuel tank. It's a replaceable part but you have to drain the tank.

There is a few companies that will ultrasonic clean your injectors(off the engine) They flow test and match the set impedance. And assemble with new seals, 0-Rings. Maybe good if you have a set of expensive custom injectors.

I love the old mercedes with the m103 engines (I have 3 one has been my daily for 10 years.) I have rebuilt a couple of the bosh jetrinc distributors didn't think it was that bad.

I'm more of a Berrymans B-12 guy. The fuel distributor usually only needs to rebuilt when it leaks (will idle Rich and if adjusted to the leak it will run lean above idle ). I always adjust working CIS to highest vacuum at idle with the OVP relay pulled. If you have to touch the EHA or Flow Meter potentiometer things get more complicated.

My dad, years ago put a full sized fridge in the back of his 1965 Ford Station Wagon, fit all the way in with the back seats folded down, and didn't bottom out.

What would be the proper way to "accurately" set that fuel injection system? What kind of devices would be used to meter the fuel and where would they be connected?

I had a old pathfinder. Had similar problem. Turned out to be the temperature sensor. The car thought it was 40 below. Was fluding the fuel system. Changed the sensor and problem was solved.

Sure would be great to know where this was purchased from. Been looking online and the only place that pops up in a search is the dealer at $300 a case. The rest appear to be knock offs
