I used to do my own car servicing and "cursed the evil swine" that designed things to be difficult to fix, but now that I own Toyota's I never experience the same stress levels.

How to pass emission test : Drive pre-1975 car.

Here's a trick I learned as a teenager back in the 70s to check my tail lights and my front headlights marker lights and turn signals. Pull into a parking spot nose first facing the glass on a storefront. Turn on your headlights checked your markers and your headlights at that time turn on your high beams check them also. Then pull out of your parking spot in back into it. You'll be able to see whether or not your brake lights work your tail lights, license plate lights and your back up lights work in your rearview mirror. I've done it for over 45 years now.

Two comments... I have a 2007 Hyundai Entourage with the 3.8l V6; it has a paper filter like what Scotty doesn't like. I was skeptical about it at first, but having changed the oil a couple of times, I really like this particular oil filter setup. On this car, the filter is on top of the engine, so when you remove the cap/filter, all of the oil drains down into the engine; you do not have to crawl under the car on your back to install a new filter; you still have to go under there to drain the old oil, however. The second comment is when I go to have my car inspected, I inform them that if there is any reason why the car will not pass, to just fail it and give me the list of things that need to be fixed and I'll return to have it re-inspected. When I took my car to NTB for an inspection, I didn't mention this and they tried to charge me $30 to replace the third/center brake light; the law had just changed in Texas requiring that the center brake light work if it is installed; I did not know, so I didn't check it. NTB just did the lamp install without asking me, so I told them to put the old bulb back. Instead of doing that, they offered to just charge me $3 for the bulb; which I agreed to.

Test in uk and Ireland is designed to drive old cars into the scrap yard and sell you a new one. They couldn’t care less if the vehicle is road worthy or if you just spent 500 on the brakes, if any part of the vehicle isn’t working they fail the vehicle. Rear wiper, dent, power window, any bushing or cv joint doesn’t matter they’ll fail it every time if possible and charge you another 110 euro if you don’t retest it fast enough.

1) The monitor exception depends on the year of your vehicle and state. 2) Save some headache and get the test done as soon as possible. Here in vegas, it's every year and they send you a small postcard 30 days before car registration renewal. If the card gets lost in the mail, or you misplace it or otherwise forget about renewal you're sol if your vehicle fails just before it comes up for renewal. You can't renew your registration unless you pass the test. You can apply for a 10 day extension but this doesn't prevent you from being pulled over for expired tags. But, the smog test is good for 90 days so I try to get this done as soon as possible. I made the mistake of waiting too long one year, test failed and I had to go to a smog repair test station. These stations are the biggest ripooff artists. Waiting too long cost me $500 that year. The actual repair took about 10 mins not counting ordering and getting the part but without my approval the garage put my truck on a dynanometer so it was pass the smog test and there wasn't anything I could do about it except fork over $500. 3) Make sure if you have any work done on your vehicle that the garage has a battery backup to preserve the computer state. Why? Because if you disconnect the battery, it clears the computer state and starts the monitor tests all over again which can take a week, weeks or months depending on how often you drive and your drive patterns. You can't get a smog test unless most or all of these are cleared depending on the state you live in and the age of your vehicle. 4) drive cycles I'm surprised this isn't mentioned. The monitors are tests that the computer does while you're driving. Each test depends on a particular drive pattern. i.e. driving at a certain speed for a certain amount of time If you disconnect your battery or erase codes, the tests start from the beginning and it could take a week, weeks, or months for you to drive in a certain way for all these tests to pass. As far as I know, in all states that require a smog test you have most or all of these monitors completed before the test. If you don't have a scanner that tells you the state of these tests, you won't know if your vehicle is ready or not for the test. What if they are not ready? You can perform what's called a drive cycle that simulates the conditions that the computer needs to either fail or pass the monitor test. Drive cycles are usually similar to most cars but they're not all alike. You need to find the drive cycle that matches your vehicle. But, it's not simple. You have to find a spot where you live where you can speed up and slow down safely on the road. I've yet to find a scanner that wouldn't clear codes but I've also yet to find a scanner that would clear codes but not reset all the monitors. That would be fantastic but I've yet to see one.

Oil the o-ring on the oil filter cap so it doesn't get stuck. Have experience with Scania trucks. Here in Finland your not allowed to have any error codes in ECU

No such worries in Florida; no stupid tests of this type. The emission tests very much discriminate against lower income end of the scale. Scotty: Everything in England is royal, except their teeth.

California no longer requires tailpipe emissions testing for model year 2000 and later, just OBDII testing. However, 1999 and earlier gasoline cars still require tailpipe checks.

We don’t have emissions inspections where I live.

Here in California, they've also gone to the OBD2 poll test for 1996 and later vehicles. They only do the dyno run (15 & 25 MPH) on 1995 and older vehicles. My smog check guy is pretty annoyed at that because he spent so much on his dyno and he doesn't get to use it so much anymore. He also mentioned in passing that the reduced levels of ZDDP in recent API-rated motor oils have done more to get old (flat-tappet) cars off the road (from engine damage) than the smog laws ever did. Gotta love California...

Car has recalls on explosive airbags, fuel tank gasket that leaks and catches fire in crash, suspension ball joint that breaks on driver side, clutch pedal that snaps and jams under the brake pedal, warning that the seat belt gets cut in the door (special rear suicide doors, and that belt is like a magnet to getting caught in the door since it slides on a floor rail) and catalytic converter that gets so hot it melts. On top of this having worn out brake pads, etc. All passes safety inspection... De-cat so the car is no longer a fire hazard, fails emission test, fails “safety test”... There is nothing that they check for safety besides tire wear... It should just be called an emissions test since that’s all it is. Also fun fact, the state right above Texas has no safety or emissions test, and things like Nitrous Oxide are perfectly legal for street use...

Buy and change your air filter yourself, don't let the repair shop do it because it is more expensive to have them do it.

@Scotty Kilmer in Florida we had emissions tests in the late 1990's. I took my 1992 V8 Camaro once, it falied the test. Took it to Pep Boys, they checked out, no problem, no codes. Took it again to get the test it passed perfectly! I was out the $$$ for getting it checked out at Pep Boys, plus having to pay for another test not to mention all the wasted time.

The UK doesn't have code analysis for the MOT, but we have, like California, a tail-pipe gas analyser that gives out all the readings. It can be a problem on run-about cars, and the advice for older cars is to take it for a blast on the motorway and get it to the test centre nice and hot.

Thank you for your info. I do appreciate you and your efforts. If I may, I'd like to point out emissions test fees and safety inspection fees are nothing more than taxes. For example, with nearly 8.5 mil registered vehicles in TX at $7 for that safety inspection is roughly $60mil dollars a year in state revenue. Oh, and it does nothing to make our roads safer. For that, you actually have to get the drivers off the road. And don't get me started on emissions testing value, or lack thereof. End of rant.

I had a clunker that passed inspection miraculously. Discovered later the muffler had rusted off, they stuck the funnel to an empty tailpipe!

Here in Northern VA, they set up emission sniffers along major commuting routes, that detect the car license plate (I guess) and the emissions as you drive by, then the system determines when your next emissions inspection is due (every 2 years, the safety is every year) and sends you a letter if your car passed nearby a tester and passed the test within a set time period before. And that's it, you no longer have to wait in line for the emissions test. At first it creeped me out, but it is pretty handy.

When I lived in Japan, even the headlights had to be perfectly adjusted or you failed the test. Normal driving put them out of tolerance, so you had to align them that morning before you went to the inspection station. cost me around $400 each inspection for parts and fees.

Florida does not have emission testing anymore. It only lasted a few years during the 90's, which just happened to be the time period when the F Series Trucks where the finest ever made! Florida's emissions testing was done away with due to the annual $50 mil. cost of the program.

I keep my insurance details in my bag( riding a motorcycle) Glove box( driving a car). My car is a mony pit patrol car( Mercedes benz). The motorcycle is nice to me when I am fixing her. My corolla is very easy to maintain and still runs like a dream( original engine, transmission), I change the oil regularly with the filter and everything, including the spark plugs and fuel injectors.

How to pass.... Make sure your car isn't a piece of junk. Damn, looks like I'm in trouble.....

Indiana got rid of theirs, they said the amount of cars they had on their highways out did any damage that the few older cars that were still around would cause. not many tree-huggers put up a fight for that either.

This was the first year i no longer had to worry about emissions inspections because my car hit classic status. I only have to get it safety inspected which was only 7 bucks.

Here in Australia do not require a yearly safety inspection for cars that at less than 5 years old, and some states such as Queensland, there do not do any yearly inspections at all, only required when you sell/or buy. But here in New South Wales it is yearly inspection.

Mini malls are a great place to check your break lights. Back in to one with a bunch of glass windows and you can see what your lights are doing.

California no longer does emission testing on 2000 and newer vehicles under 14,000 GVW. Only an OBD2 scan and a visual inspection for defective or modified aftermarket parts.

My brother had a 1958 Pontiac that had an oil filter inside of a metal canister. It held about 1.5 quarts of oil. Fortunately, the canister had a drain plug. Currently in California, smog inspection for cars 2000 and newer is just a computer that plugs into the car's OBD2 outlet, and the two computers have a conversation, then transmit the information to the "big brother" computer in Sacramento. One thing it checks is the VIN number to make sure that the car on the report is the same one it talked to. For cars 1976 to 1999, the car is run on a dynamometer first at 15 MPH, then at 25 MPH, and the tailpipe emissions are measured at these speeds. Some emissions testing places are not bothering to repair their dyno equipment if they break down. The newest car that needs to be tested this way is now 20 years old.

Most Australian states you only get cars tested on ownership transfer. I live in NSW and the yearly test is just safety thing lights, brakes, tire wear, wipers and no excessive body damage. And you can't get insurance until the test is passed, not insurance for a useless car..

The simple way I check the rear lights, is park the rear of the car facing a big window at some store at a distance where I can see the car in the rear view mirror. Then test the brake lights and with my foot on the brake put in in reverse to see if the reverse lights work, as well. The other lights, like the head lights, tail lights and license plate light can be checked just by turning them on and walk around the car. I'm fortunate enough that my county (Stark) in Ohio doesn't require an E-check.

No inspections in Minnesota. Had emissions for years. They discovered the air was actually less clean with them in place. Got rid of them back in the late 90s.

My county doesnt do inspections or emissions, dont have to worry about jumping through all these hoops to be allowed to drive my vehicle. Already paying so much for it, no reason to be forced to pay extra per year.

Don't forget the visual inspection in CA. Anything that looks amiss will result in failure. An upgraded silicone line, a aftermarket diverter valve, whatever that looks different that doesn't have the proper sticker. It's no wonder there are so many new cars here.

I lived next to old guy, and his son died, and he got to two grand kids. He was doing okay, but sold his house, and moved his home in Florida. He sold everything, and had his stuff shipped down to home. Then he drove down to Florida with his grand kids in his car. In West Virgina the cops pulled him over and told him he was over due for an inspection. The cop felt for the old guy, and let him go if he promised to get the car inspected. The old guy found a place to inspect his car. It was late, and the guy said, "That thing ain't going to ever pass, but if you let me have go at that girl, I'll give you a inspection ticket. The girl was his fourteen year grand kid. The old guy goes, "Do you remember my license plate number?" The mechanic didn't say nothing. The old guy had some papers on the counter, and put in his pocket, then the old guy wopped the mechanic up side the head with a Colt 1911. The mechanic hit the ground, and started crawel for it. A few more wops up side the head, and the old guy kicked him over on his back. "I'm taking an inspection sticker, and you ain't every going say anything to anyone, or come back finish this." Then the old guy drove out the state, and got the car reinspected. Sometime being a low down scumbag gets you wopped up side the head real good.

Thanks for advising about changing the oil and air filter for emmissions. Also thanks for advising to buy the oil adapter filter kit for Toyotas. I agree, the last few new Toyotas where I changed oil have filters that are very difficult to remove.

Here in New Mexico a safety inspection is NOT required and you should see the junkers on the road with bald tires, cracked windshields, burned out headlights and brake light bulbs. I can imagine there are many with worn suspension components and brake pads as well...........welcome to the "Land of Enchantment"

Spent 1500 dollars so far on emissions related issues. Charcoal canister, troubleshooting fees at 4 different shops cleared po442,456 and finally 448 only to have a po447 show up. Here in ct. Big hassle getting out as soon as possibe taxes galore tolls galore keeps getting worse

Oh boy I'm from Canada. It's a real pain here as well. I asked my mechanic about changing the oil before e test. He said it won't make a difference.

Inspection in Trinidad is different, they only check for oil leaks, blown lights, S links, brakes and to see if your engine bay is clean.

How to pass your annual MOT test in England 1) Check all your lights work 2) Replace all your wipers with new ones just before the inspection 3) Replace all your tires with new ones just before the inspection 4) Replace every component in your suspension just before the inspection. 5) Replace the catalytic converter or just accept that if you're lucky it will cost you £20 in wipers, if you're unlucky it will cost £800 in tires and shocks. They have to sell you something, the price they charge for the MOT doesn't cover what the government charges them to let them do MOTs.

In CT they do both the tailpipe test and OBD II test, unless you have AWD. They they just do the OBD II test. It is because they put the cars front wheels on a treadmill, and run the engine. They cannot do that with the AWD cars.

No speedometer required in Texas perfect!

Here in North Carolina they do all three emissions, obd2 , and safety and it’s required every year if you want to renew your registration.
