How can you tell if a timing belt has been sitting on a shelf for years or is new?
@ThomasWBaldwin
@ThomasWBaldwin 28 күн бұрын
I would snag up a four cylinder version of that in a heart beat. Man that's in great shape. Too bad engineers made that bad 6 cylinder, interference engine with a rubber timing belt..
@loualexander3408
@loualexander3408 27 күн бұрын
@@tonymontana3742 A good service shop would put a sticker on the plastic timing cover showing the date and mileage when it was done. Or like Scotty said, if there is nothing, you can take off the two plastic covers and inspect the belt itself (or have your mechanic do it). I have a 2008 Honda PIlot EX-L, now with 252k miles. I got it at 225k miles and immediately changed the belt, tensioners, water pump. I suggest using Aisin or Honda brands (Aisin makes them for Honda). I got mine at Rock Auto - it was $4xx. 2008 AWD was the last year Honda Pilot made without the VCM. That is the one of the reasons I picked it. Mine did not have a tow hitch, which is what I wanted. I added one myself. The car runs great. I use it for towing a trailer. The car is good for towing too.

I got a VCM disabler for my Honda Odyssey because it was running rough. It cost like a $100. It was one of those good ones from Canada that disables itself if your engine temperature gets too high. Not one of those cheap ones from China that can't do that. Now my Odyssey runs on 6 cylinders all the time and it runs smooth.

I'm not sure that the industry has improved that whole variable displacement of cylinder deactivation since Cadillac's 8-6-4 engine disaster. They still have the same problems. If you have a bad design it doesn't matter who builds it or how well you maintain it the thing just isn't going to work. I would try and deactivate it if possible.

@@lucienswift447 I always wondered why they could not randomize the turning off of cylinders to reduce the possibility of warping/deforming of cylinder walls. We are the original owners of our 2014 EXL. We had the timing belt changed at 110K. Ours is burning oil & I always check it. We owned a 2003 Pilot for 15 years- great vehicle, but had the infamous rust at the rear wheel opening. I did a body filler repair which came out decent for my OCD. Honda removed the inner rubber wheel opening trim on the newer models which eliminated the build up of road salt.

I’ve owned my 2014 pilot since 2017. 100,000 miles later still purring along. I’ll run it till it dies… And then keep resuscitating it. Does everything I need. I used to 4500 pound boat trailer. Not anymore. And I got rid of them variable valve timing with a little electrical transistor I bought from Canada. Mine doesn’t burn any oil. Guess I’m lucky.

I had the timing belt changed at Honda dealer. But after another 70k mileage, the belt stretched and the engine could not keep stable timing at idle. 8-13 degrees caused rolling idle. I will never buy another v6 Honda.

Maybe find another repair shop? I've never heard of a new (OEM) belt doing that. Sad to say, but I have heard of certain dealers using sub-standard parts.

@@WannaBe-bsuidby the time the car developed the stretched belt, the car wasn’t worth spending another $1200 for another timing belt service. I had the dealer give me all my old parts and all the packaging for the new parts, which were all OEM

@@anthonysilvestri4946 I had the car diagnosed by the dealer and they confirmed it. They told me belts last 70-100k miles and that it was time for another one even though the first one lasted 100k miles. I don’t have patience to fart around at multiple mechanics so I got a Toyota highlander with a timing chain and never had any timing issues.

I have that!!!!! 2012 with 155,000 miles. I'm going to run it until it won't run anymore. I just keep up with the maintenance although the cost to maintain it is has gotten high, still better than a 700.00 a month or more car payment. I also save on insurance due to only having liability only coverage.

Seems like cars burning or using oil used to happen so frequently, the gas attendent (ha, yeah there used to be them) would check the oil every time you got gas.. And most times you'd need a quart.
