Just a heads up. When replacing wiper blades, protect your windshield with a thick towel folded several times. That wiper arm without the blade can accidentally slam down and crack your windshield.

Living in a snow free part of America and keeping my 2011 Prius in a garage all the time I find the rubber blades to be very good. The only thing I do different is, I clean the blades with denatured alcohol about once a month and the blades last for years (5). I like your channel a lot and find the most interesting topics to watch. It is hard to find the truth about anything anymore, especially cars. Keep up the good work !!

Thanks Scotty! This is my experience also. Silicon works better and lasts far, far longer. The PIAA brand you display in this video is what I use. This is a Japanese brand, and they are less costly than Bosch silicon blades. For many years I used Bosch blades. They used to sell blades which were designed to take refills; but have now discontinued the refillable blades. This is wasteful and costly... so I wound up being a customer of PIAA. And, guess what? That's right, PIAA wiper blades are refillable, just like the old style ANCO and Bosch blades were, but they are made of silicon! PIAA makes an astonishingly good product.

@ivermec-tin666
@ivermec-tin666 5 жыл бұрын
@@norman7179 Yes, I noticed. But they didn't all make this change simultaneously. Bosch held out long after the others, until they began to make the Icon blade line, which is very sleek and expensive. No need to continue making the OG style when you can foist over priced metrosexual blades on a fickle customer base I abhore the sheer material waste of a wiping blade "component". IMO they are an ecological insult.

This is why manufactures team up with sales companies by knowingly producing sub par products with minimal longevity and quality so that the sales cycle will experience exponentially greater revolutions. Why sell nice things if you know you'll have lesser overall sales? Greed is the cause for the excessive waste of natural resources and extreme pollution.

Hi Scotty, I have been a fan of yours since I was a kid in the 80s i remember you being on our local Houston news station (channel 11 i think it was..) before I had my first car. You were always entertaining, knowledgeable and most importantly, honest! I am glad that I just happened to find you on the KZfaq here while looking up stuff for my car. I have subscribed to your KZfaq channel now and I look forward to watching your informative videos. Thank you for continuing to share all of your car knowledge and experiences!

I bought those as well. Lasted forever compared to rubber. Took me a long while to figure out why those lasted so much longer than everything else rubber I used. Finally I read the material used was not rubber! Thats what I get for assuming.

Icons were developed for storm chasers. They're made for tough conditions. I had one I bought as a replacement in a dire time on my first car for my drivers side, pound for pound it was 3x better than the rubber

I like the OEM wiper arms because of the wiper slap that I got using after-market arms/blades. I order Trico blade refills and change them out about every 8-9 months, or so. It only takes a few minutes to put the new ones into the wiper blade arms More often than silicone, I agree, but they give a good, clean wipe -- and they are quiet. My main defense against visibility impairment is a coating of Rain-X, which I put on about once a month. It's quick and easy, and the harder it rains, the better it works. At about 35-40 mph, I can turn the wipers to 'intermittent', or sometimes even off, as the air passing over the car makes the water droplets rapidly run back on the windshield and side windows, providing pretty good visibility. When I lived up north, the coating of Rain-X made it easier to deice the windows, using a scraper -- the ice just slid off, in sheets! The only trick is that it must be applied to clean DRY window -- if it's wet, it doesn't work well.

I saw this video last fall and followed this advice as my rubber wiper blades wore out. I’ve been running the same silicone blades for over a year now. There’s apparently a break in period. At first they seemed not to work well for the first few weeks but once they broke in they’ve been running like new ever since.

Had a '06 ML350 and that thing would break down so often (first 2 years - 4 fan belts, alternator and bracket, water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor, brake pads and rotors on all 4's). After 6 yrs the intake manifold (aluminum) was deemed by MB to have deteriorated to a point where oil was leaking from its rear area. Luckily I've gotten the extended warranty but dumped that "money pit" once it expired. Got a '13 Lexus RX450h now and it has never gone in for any repair work. So far, only tires and oil changes. Bottom line.....stay away from MB that were built in the USA.

To Dark Days: Unfortunately I just this morning ordered Zimmermann rotors which are highly recommended by various KZfaqrs but I will definitely look into those rotors down the road. I think I did actually buy Centric rotors with depressions in them and a gray coating for my e350 van a few years ago. I will have to check on that.

Hi Scotty, I watch your videos all the time. I live in Florida and as you know the rain here is no joke, so I have to use a quality wiper blade. Up until watching this video I found that Rain X latitude were the best wiper blades out there. I usually change my wiper blades every year, just before rainy season. This season i was at the auto parts store and saw that they finally carried Silicon wiper blades (Michelin made them) and i hate to say this but i'm not impressed, it still streaked and didnt really seem better than what i was already using. Now i'll be the first to say that it may be a poor quality of wiper blade. But for price reference the silicon blades were $25 roughly and the Rain X latitude were $17 . I'm sorry but i didnt see the advantage. I'm going back to the RainX ones. I'm not trying to call you out but i just wanted to let you know what I found

I had that same white Ford Escort 1:08. It had a small rainforest growing on the front passenger side floor from a roof leak. Wipers worked great.
@JoeBlowski
@JoeBlowski 3 жыл бұрын
Very rare for roofs to leak, but it's very common for passenger floor floods due to failure of the gasket between the hole in the metal firewall and the plastic AC/heat housing outlet where AC condensation exits through a rubber flapper to drip onto the ground which is easy to fix by applying silicone caulk between the metal firewall and the plastic after removing the right front wheel and peeling back the plastic inner fender. I recommend putting some around the studs that penetrate the firewall in that area and finish by sealing around the fresh air intake screen in the cowl area which also fails letting windshield runoff to run freely into the AC/heat housing where, just like AC condensation, it exits through the pest control flapper drain which can be a major contributor to such floods, because it happens even when the AC is not being used. Maybe Scotty will take the hint and show how to do it if he hasn't already.
