Mazda, baby. I was a loyal Toyota/Honda driver for decades. In January I decided that both new cars I was looking to buy, the RAV4 and CR-V weren’t worth the money they were asking ($40,000+). My wife and I settled on a Mazda CX-5 and we couldn’t be happier. It was built in Japan and drives absolutely beautifully. We even like the ride quality and handling better than both the Toyota and Honda, and the cabin is quieter too. Oh yeah, it was also $10K cheaper! Go Mazda!!!!!

I also am a very satisfied CX-5 driver. Bought a 2016 model new in late 2015. 2.5 liter non-turbo, 6-speed auto. At 100K miles, it's just started using a quart of oil as I come up to the 5k miles and have the oil changed. Not a muscle car but it's got plenty of go to merge and cruise at 80 without breathing hard. Hardly any repairs so far. What else could I want?

Honda is basically a tank. I own a Honda Accord 1999 automatic transmittion made in UK. That baby may have many faults due to an old age but it still rolls like on butter. Those fabrick seats are top notch. No sign of wear and tear. Oil is basically not disappearing at all if I change it regularly. That car even speeds up pretty nice. One thing I do hate is the bad outside noise cancellation. Overall, I love my Honda.

Subaru doesn't fix what's not broken. Their cars are very consistent and generally get better every year because they focus on incremental improvements to hardware systems. They have been using the SAME boxer engine for decades. The SAME all-wheel drive system. They tweak and refine things that already work well. Most car companies try to do more than they can do well.

I think Scotty forgets that Toyota has a large stake in Subaru. In fact you can find Toyota and Denso parts in Subarus these days. My best friend has a 2015 Forester and his Starlink system is almost identical to my 2016 Rav4 Entune system. So I think if you want to not get a Toyota but still want the reliability of one or close to it, you can’t go wrong with a Subie.
@One4Truth
@One4Truth Ай бұрын
True, they do own a 25% stake in Subaru now. They've partnered to help Subaru with EV technology and have shared tech and platform in vehicles, but their engines are their own. Subaru still uses their boxer motors exclusively and asymmetrical AWD in every vehicle except the BRZ which is built on the Toyota rear wheel drive platform with a boxer engine.

Had many of the original RAV4s with well over 200k miles. Highlander was the smoothest running vehicle we ever owned. Owned original CRVs and Pilots. They had a little more pick up than the RAV4s. Unfortunately the new gen CRV already had to replace injectors in the Earth Dreams (Nightmares) engine with 75k.

It looks and runs like new. When new, I got about 48 mpg., now I get about 40 mpg because the hybrid battery is older and less able to run the EV mode for as long. Hyundai warrantied the hybrid battery for the life for the original owner. No other car company did this that I know of. I have yet to replace the brakes. The car has passed every inspection without any issues other than tire wear, and wiper blades. It’s comfortable, economical, stylish, reliable and durable. What more could you ask of any car?

Ask someone who’s owned an independent shop for 20-30 years about Toyotas reliability the last 6-8 years. Unfortunately their QC started slipping about 10 years ago and the last 2-4 years Subaru Mazda a couple of others have either caught Toyota or even surpassed them. One of the best examples is the Tundra. It was one heck of a HD 1/2 ton until they went the Ford route with a tiny V6 with turbos. Funny thing - I recently switched to Corolla (2013-2016 kind) and while it is quite OK, there are signs they eventually will become the next VW. First odd thing is how messy are the designations: XI, E18, E180, E170 and production years. Different engines have almost identical symbols, but for example oil filter for 1ZR-FAE variant is different than for the same 1ZR-FAE engine, but from previous model. According to their own warranty terms, you shouldn't see any rust within 3 years, and any holes after 12 years. Maybe it sounds reasonable, but while this car feels like a new one, any look underneath, behind bumpers, or inside wheel arches just begs for fluidfilm. Oh, and it already had a busted AC condenser and sometimes misbehaving proximity sensors (and parking assistant depends on them).

My Mazda had SO MANY problems. 2014 Mazda6. Thermostat going out early, Having to shift my automatic gear selector into park several times in a row before the car would recognize it was supposed to be in park, and then worst of all: Issues from the factory. A false check engine light appeared due to an issue with the ECU programming from the factory (Mazda released a bulletin saying the fix is to pay for a dealership ECU reprogram). I also had issued with misfires; another bulletin which stated my VIN used non standard ignition coils, instead using a cheaper off-brand which were known to cause misfires in the engine.

The head gasket issue is the biggest of all Subaru Crosstrek problems. This is one prevalent issue that many Subaru models encounter, despite their reputation for reliability. Since the 90s, Subaru has been battling this issue, yet it became one of Crosstrek’s problems years later. This problem is common on the larger 2.5L engine.CVT issues Customers experienced stalling, knocks, and shudders from the CVT.Among all Subaru Crosstrek problems, most of them are common only on older models. However, this problem is found even in the second-generation Crosstrek manufactured after 2018. The PCV valve prevents waste gases from building up inside the crankcase and allows waste gases to escape back into the intake system for re-burning; however, this valve is prone to damage.
@palebeachbum

People will argue that Subaru fixed the 2.5L head gasket problem years ago, but that's entirely untrue. People are still having issues with 2.5L Subarus. Someone online said they have this issue with their 2020 Outback. It's mind-boggling Subaru has not fixed this issue or scrapped this engine design yet in 28 years. That's insane!

Subaru is a nightmare. On my Subaru, the headgaskets blew every 7000 miles and it took over a month to get it repaired. And it really was never repaired correctly as the head gaskets blew again after 7000 miles. they could never tune the engine correctly as it continually sputtered and the repair service was not too happy about seeing the car come in just after it was supposedly repaired. finally i gave up and got rid of the car. I have had hondas since then and I can recommend the Honda car and engine.

But Fuji Heavy Industries was renamed to Subaru Incorporated in 2017, hence the switch from F to S. The third character is the production facility. Subarus production facility 2 is in Ota, Japan in Gunma province. So is production facilities 1 and 3. Production facility 1 is for the Impreza and Forrester lines. Production facility 3 only for transmission and engine assembly. ALL Subaru engines and transmissions are produced in Facility 3. Scotty mentioned the issues that some cars with automatic cars have. Only manual will keep the owner happy, forever. And will cost less.

I've had 3 subarus. Done thousands of km on gravel, snow, beaches and off road. They have their weaknesses but are awesome and reliable.

Why do you think our Government keeps bailing out the big 3

Of Toyota or any other manufacturer was truly that much better they would be the only ones selling any real volume. Truth be known, the Toyotas that are sold in other countries are better built than the one here in America. The government will protect Ford GM, etc, by not allowing them other makes from Toyota in this country.

Subaru and Toyota are very close partners, business- and technology-wise. They co-develop common platforms and Toyota owns 20% of Subaru (which makes them "family"). 😁

Ive got a Mazda3 MPS...believe its called a Mazdaspeed 3 over there. Definitely the best car I've owned by far, absolutely never let me down, never had a warning light and feels fun to drive to this day. Keep it maintained and it'll look after you. A Mazda will rust away before you need to get rid of it. Had mine 12 years and done 163k miles on a 2.3L petrol (gas) turbo engine.
