This reminds me of the nearly 20 year old Honda Civic my dad had most of my life. It had cooling problems that he couldn't diagnose so he had to have containers of water in his car when it got too hot and this dude gave him a coolant cap from Mexico that was basically a cheap cap with a hole in it. It was more common for people in Mexico to fill the radiator with water since the cheaper cars in mostly rough terrain driven by mostly poorer people wouldn't last anyway. The cap was designed to prevent internal water damage by letting the pressure release from the hole.

Former cooling system mechanic here. In an emergency re move the thermostat, cut the valve from the center and put the outer ring back in. Don't run it without that restriction or the pump will send it through the radiator so fast it won't have time to remove the heat from the coolant. I always keep an old thermostat with the valve removed in my 2 older vehicles just in case. Also, when changing the thermostat test new one in boiling water on the stove to be sure. If you drill a 1/16 or 1/8 inch hole in it just outside the valve center it will let trapped air purge from your engine. Otherwise it can take up to 2 weeks of driving to completely purge that air that gets into it anytime you open the cooling system.

Cool video! I've been using some great car care software named Automotive Wolf for years. It keeps track of all the maintenance on both my cars and a motorcycle. My 2008 Toyota has over 300,000 miles and still runs like new. I only use Toyota Oil and filters in it. Keeping up with a vehicle maintenance schedule is critical to avoiding repairs.

I agree about using the proper coolant. In the old days, coolant was coolant. Now some have different chemistry, especially long life organic acid ones, and should not be mixed. This is one place I won't try to save money and will get the recommended coolant and transmission fluid at the vehicle dealer's parts dept. I have a Honda with no temp gauge, just a cold and hot light. I hate that, reminds me of domestic cars in the past.
@rogacz5966
@rogacz5966 Жыл бұрын
My Honda also only has the cold and hot light. Did you use the universal all year honda type 2 coolant? My service book says to use it , but it's literally three times more expensive than a well known brand in my country
@gmzx3
@gmzx3 Жыл бұрын
I am due for a change and plan on using the Honda type 2. I have seen Peak ones made for Honda etc. Given how long life the coolant is, I'll pay for the Honda stuff knowing it is fully compatible.

I once had a car with a malfunctioning cooling system. The only way to keep the coolant temperature down and out of the red on the dial, was to turn the cabin heat up to MAX. This was OK in winter, but in the middle of summer - not so much.

Mr. Scott: I’m interested in purchasing either a Nissan Xterra or a frontier. I really like these vehicles, my one concern is what they call Strawberry Milkshake of Death. I understand somehow the coolant gets mixed in with the transmission fluid and destroys the transmission and radiator both. Could you tell me please if this is still a problem? Presumably, they fixed it, but could you tell me what year model of these cars no longer had that issue? Would you say that everything from 2011 on his fixed? Or could still be an issue? Thank you sir.

One of your best videos. Water is good in an emergency. My car foiled over once. I got a couple gallons from a nearby farmer. It worked fine until The next day when I got it to a garage to replace the coolant. Sometimes mixing two types of coolant they will form a gel and won't do a thing. GM requires a special coolant. Mixed with regular coolant the gel will quickly kill your engine.

There aren't many here from what I've seen and I heard they can be quite expensive to fix... I'd still want a diesel engine as I don't feel a particular pleasure in going to the gas station too often and I also love my standard transmission

I was driving my sisters van up Pikes Peak, when she stated it was overheating on the interstate. Cranked up the heater, but only made it about 2/3 of the way up before it overheated.

@@andrewsivertsen9538 Probably Toyota followed by older Fords with a V-8 engine.

I once owned a 98 Camry , the shop who changed timing belt and water pump forgot to refill the coolant after the work done. I drove it the next day to work 45 miles one way, the car overheated on the return trip when it stuck in traffic. I just turned on the fan and continue to home, the needle stayed in the middle all the way to home. What a car!

Hey scotty do you think there be a kit to buy to convert my dads Silverado run off oak wood with good metal air intake filter the hydrogen generate from the oak sucks in to the filter and used as infinite fuel good design am i right? what do you think about this design? You think is a good idea incase you run out you just hop out collect some sticks and leaves in the fule barrel ignite it wait about 5 or 10 minutes to warm up then start the engine and hopefully it will run takes a few trys but wheb you get the design right you and me will probably be happy as a steam clam
