How is this start/stop actually a "green" tech? Starters and extra batteries. How long will a jeep engine endure with this "awesome feature"? Hyundi should be charged an extra carbon tax penalty, because of the low mileage disposal engines they produce. How much more of a carbon foot print and trash in the environment is being created by such novel junk?

Government overreach. They do this because of EPA regulations so they can meet MPG requirements. And since it wears out faster - it's win/win for car manufacturers. I think there are figures out there saying it saves a negligible amount of gas over the life of the vehicle.

Totally agree. The gas savings vs parts wear is like risking dollars to save pennies. The feature is also SUPER ANNOYING; dangerous even, due to the delayed restart. I constantly worry about stepping on gas too quick during the restart. Luckily my current cars Acura MDX Advance & RSX Type S don’t have it and my next car won’t have it either.

They could get 2 or 3% by just making the vehicle lighter mate. One wonders how much efficiency is lost by hauling around the ever increasing number of complex gadgets? For example electrically heated seats can weigh upwards of 80KG for a driver/front passenger seat for what is an utterly pointless function as your arse will warm it up after a minute while the cabin heater kicks in. A lighter car means better road holding, lower fuel consumption and better performance. I own a 2004 lightweight French supermini hot hatch, curb weight of 1035KG and it does 0-62 in 6.7, 140MPH, and cruising at 75MPH (it's peak mpg point) gets 45MPG on a flat motorway with 35MPH on the urban cycle if you don't drive like a boy racer. I wonder what it would do if I lightened it and replaced the posh leather seats and climate control system? That'd knock around 10% of the weight off, and of course with no A/C belt holding the motor back it'd rev a little more freely.

@@michealcthompsonjrYessir it does make a difference. If I forget and leave mine on and the engine shuts down at a light, then when I take off, if I forget and try to take off too fast, there’s a nasty jolt in the drive train as the engine tries to catch up with what’s going on, and I know it can’t be good for things. And that right there is why I try to always remember to keep mine turned off. Besides that it’s really annoying. The potential repair costs are not worth the potential savings.

Had a 2017 Dodge Durango with this feature. Had to replace the starter which cost over $1k because the engine mount had to be removed to get the job done. The mechanic checked how many starts the old starter had on it. It had logged 36,000 starts! We were floored! Even if I had started my car 10 times a day for a year it would have only totaled 3650 starts in a single year, but because it stops the engine at every stoplight, stop sign, and even when you pull in to park, it had racked up that many starts at the 87K mile mark.

Thank's Scotty. In addition to wearing the engine, battery, and starter out faster, the few times I tried that feature on my 2019 Highlander, I noticed a lag in acceleration. Maybe not noticeable for the average driver, but I've driven Emergency vehicles for over thirty years. If you need to accelerate from a stop to get out of a situation where you may be impacted in a collision, you don't want any hesitation.
@ward7576

Yes, hundred times yes - the lag in accel after a full stop is just terrible. I got Dacia Duster 2023 1.3l engine with start-stop and I just can't start driving after a full stop with proper acceleration - it feels like I never gave it any gas...2 seconds go by and I am getting fking yeeted forward with that delayed acceleration. I enjoy the part of using remote and starting the car with button, but other than that - it's terrible.

@@ward7576I personally have made it a point to try to avoid those smaller engines. I had a 1.6L 2013 Ford Fusion, and don't get me wrong I did love that car. Cool looking, and a solid car all around. Except at 150k miles we were doing something and noticed that the serpentine belt we just replaced 6 months ago was now shredded. The headers were leaking. The turbochargers they put on these smaller engines are killing them. Maybe they can get away without a turbo on some, but most they put a turbo on, and I just don't know if I could trust one, even without a turbo. I hope you get a long life out of that car, but man if a vehicle is blowing oil like that under 200k miles, it's a failure in my opinion. Meanwhile my 5.6L v8 on my truck is going on 325k miles with no such oil leak. As far as I'm concerned, that's HALF the lifespan.
Жыл бұрын
The lag in acceleration comes from torque converter no longer spinning since the engine shutdown. If quick acceleration after start in automatic car is what you want, a dual clutch transmission is what you want.

Amen, Scotty! I'm a reliability engineer and the auto cutoff drives me nuts for the same reason. The bearings will not be dry of oil, oil clings to metal surfaces for a quite some time. Pull up the dipstick, is the oil sheeting off leaving it dry, of course not, oil clings to metal by design. Also some cars will have a separate electric oil pump that keeps the oil pumping around the engine ready for the start up. There is no extra wear on the engine itself, you might even say less wear as the engine isn't sat ticking over. Certainly there will be more wear and tear on the battery and the starter motor. The main reason the system was introduced was to reduce local pollution in towns and cities where cars sit in queues, and not to save us fuel. The system doesn't produce less carbon emissions overall (probably more carbon emissions) simply because the car is now carrying extra weight for due to extra batteries and up-rated components, and needs to use fuel to charge the battery again after every stop/start cycle, so any marketing material that says its better for carbon emissions is green washing.

Thank You!! You settled an argument I had with an acquaintance about this feature. I live in Phoenix and drive on the "surface streets" constantly. If someone were to commute from North Phoenix into downtown along, say, 7th Ave. to work during morning rush hour, one could expect to make at least 9 or 10 stops along the way. And in summer when you have your A/C going, daytime running lights on, other interior electronics running, your phone charging, every time you stop for a light, your main battery is draining itself running those systems because your engine has stopped. So, it stood to reason that your main battery will wear out A LOT faster than it would if your idling engine was powering those systems via your alternator while you idle. AND i just knew, without any written evidence, that if you restarted your engine about 10 times more often than normal, you'd burn through your starter MUCH sooner. Physics is truth.

My father-in-law's F-150 has auto start stop. I think his current truck is a 2020 like my Ranger. The first time i ever saw the start stop was on his truck. We were going somewhere and i saw him press the button with the A & circular arrow. He explained it shuts off the auto start stop feature. That was a big help because when i got my Ranger, I knew how to deactivate the start stop before the salesman could explain the feature. Personally, i can't stand the feature and i am glad i can shut it off. As soon as i start my truck up, its the first thing i do. It is the dumbest feature put into vehicles.

The default ought to be to have stupid start stop OFF! I’ve had too many close calls pulling out into traffic from the hesitation in forgetting to push that stupid button to turn the thing off! Note: You can get a dongle to plug into the computer port to make the default OFF! Haven’t got one yet but plan to. Thanks! Good video.

Yes I learned that trick real quick. Hearing that starter constantly firing up the engine 25 times a day when it should be 5 times. We always disable that button. In fact I purchased a component to tie into the system under the dash that prevents it from coming on at all. Don't even have to remember to push the button. they make them for most vehicles. The first car I had with the start/stop system was a 2019 Buick Enclave, but it had no button to disable the system. I used to shift into manual and go to 9th gear to prevent the system from shutting the car off. My daughter's 2019 Equinox had a similar issue, but to solve her problem, I bought a Range Disabler, plugged it into the OBD port, and the problem was solved.

👍🏼👍🏼 I hate this feature, specially on a STOP sign. There is a u-tuber that did some test on gasoline consumption and you only saves gas if you stop for more than a 10 seconds. I only use it on intersections that I know gonna take longer and early in the morning I turn off the lights and A/C to avoid faster drain of the battery. Good job Scotty in keeping the community informed and sharing your expertise knowledge to the whole world.

I didn't know this stuff, but it always made sense to me to turn the start/stop function off after starting the car. On the subject of batteries, it was necessary to take my car apart to get to the battery behind the front wheel on my Chrysler Sebring... a big job! Then the special battery was £600 UK. That was a few years ago, so would be much more expensive to replace now. Being older and (hopefully) wiser, I now have a Honda Civic.

Great video Scotty. This is particularly true for diesel cars as StartStop crap could mess up the glowing plugs as well. The ides for this system is not saving fuel, but to have cleaner air on traffic lights, BUT and only BUT all cars have this system and use it.

The glow plugs do NOT light up if the engine is already warm. Combustion pressure alone will fire the engine. My "wait-to-start" indicator immediately extinguishes on my 7.3 if the engine is already hot so I ignored the indicator. But not in the morning I waited until the indicator extinguished before attempting to start.

I think this is where Scotty's usual saying " follow the money" comes into play, if cars wear out faster with the stop start system there is a very great incentive for the off button to be withdrawn, sadly once the gaurantee expires worn out parts or whole cars are good news for the car companies. Good news for the government too, extra tax is paid if people are forced to repair or replace their cars.

The biggest issue with my ‘23 Civic is the idle stop feature. My car has a manual transmission, which means that if I forget to turn it off, I’ll panic for a second thinking I’ve stalled the engine when I come to a stop. It also sometimes turns on with the clutch partially engaged which makes a rough start, and on top of all other problems will wear the clutch.
