I've always said that older vehicles are easier to work on and are more dependable ! I'm 73 yrs.old and took three courses in mechanical engineering at Ohio University in the 1960's . The professor told our class that vehicles would be coming out in the future with on board computers and would be way less dependable and I've seen it come to fruition ! He wrote on the chalk board the first day of class the acronym of "KISS " and asked if anyone knew what it stood for ? No one knew and he said ," keep it simple,stupid !" He said that any mechanical system made more complicated than it needs to be ,the less reliable it becomes ! I 've witnessed this over my 73 yrs. of life ! As a doctorate of mechanical engineering retired from General Motors he knew what he was talking about ! He's long gone since he was in his 60's yrs.of age and I was 18 yrs. of age BUT I have never forgot that man and not only his wisdom and intellect BUT his fore -thought of what was coming in the future ! I still drive cars over 25 yrs. old and have driven numerous cars over 300,000 miles !!!! I maintain and change oil and filter religiously so I'm sure that's a big part of my cars longevity ! Finally I believe the old school autos are very much simpler and thus more reliable than any brand new cars !!!!

My 96 Ranger is immortal. The first odometer quit at 250k. It’s been through two more and the last odometer quit about 14 years ago. If I had to guess, it probably has 700 to 800,000 miles. On its third clutch. Had the transmission rebuilt once and the 2.3 Lima has never been out or apart, just routine maintenance. Been commuting 100 mile round trip for about 10 years. The only time it was towed was a u joint decided to call it a day. Of course it’s been through timing belts, water pumps, hoses, brakes. I just last year replaced the entire AC system for around $400 and had it charged at a shop. About the same as a typical car payment

I owned a Canadian built 2001 Chevy Astro I bought in 2002. Owned it till 2020 and put 196,000 miles on it. One trans rebuild, no engine problems at all. Finally it rusted away. Still miss it.

My old 45 GMC i sold a couple years back will never die, i am working on it for the new owners, T5 trans, new wiring, the 69 Fargo power wagon i just picked up for free will never die, my 75 F350 will never die, it doesn't matter how much gas costs, keeping these old trucks on the road is money in the bank.

I like the late 80s to early 2000s GM trucks. I have owned three of them: A 1988 4x4 3/4 Ton, 1990 GMC 4x4 Stepside, and a 1999 Chevy Tahoe. All three vehicles made it between 270,000 to 295,000 miles with the original drivetrain. The 1988 truck had some serious rust issues though.

I bought a '96 Chevy 1500 last year for $1,100 and I love it. It has about 200,000 miles but the transmission was rebuilt 15,000 miles ago. And it has a solid grill guard

‘89 F-250 with the inline 6 is literally the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Absolutely no idea how many miles, but I’ve put at least 150,000 on it myself. Strong, dependable and easy to work on.

Bought a 2001 Chevy S-10 Crew Cab 4X4 pickup with the 4.3 V6 used in 2010 for $5,000. Still driving it more than 12 years later. Yes, I’ve had to do some fairly spendy repairs along with regular maintenance but it still beats the heck out of having a gigantic truck payment. And it never fails to get me through the worst snow storms that a Minnesota winter can throw our way.

4 years ago I found my rare 5.7 V8 regular cab short bed 2007 Toyota Tundra SR5, everything works, it's totally reliable, it goes fast and stops great, and the gas mileage isn't bad. It has 304,000 miles and I am taking it on a 4 hour round trip drive into the heart of Atlanta later today. It's a keeper.

I have a rust free 01 7.3 F250 4dr. 2wd . With 180k miles that I hope to see 500k. It's got a BTS trans. And a little performance work. Gets 9-11 mpg when towing the 5th wheel and 17-19 mpg without the trailer. I had it ceramic coated. It shines like new.

I still have a 1993 Chevy Silverado 1500 I used for 15 years as a plow truck with a Boss 8.6 V Plow. The nice thing is you can tighten up the torsion bar and bring up the ride height. I still have it for a backup plow it took a beating and kept on ticking. Runs great but it has skin cancer.

$5100 for a 2000 Silverado I bought in '08 with 103k miles 5.3 V8 4x4 Z71 Extended Cab. Now has 205k ...really only needed required maintenance. Replaced a cheap ignition switch, switch for electronic side mirror adjustments, an AC condenser and now I'm having to replace the water pump soon. Don't think I've put even over $1500 in parts in it and I've had it for almost 15 yrs. That's really it. Still runs great and the paint looks great on it for being a 22 y.o. truck.

I bought a 2003 Tundra rear wheel drive new in 2003. It now has 342,000 miles no issues. The only thing I had to replace was air conditioning.

I have a '79 F250 model with 130,000 miles and she's still going strong and dependable. I love my truck.

Here's a little tip on those older Tundra's: Remove the metal safety guard from the rear differential that contains the 4WD black plastic motor box. On the very top of the plastic box, you will see a vacuum line. Inspect that line and make sure that it is STILL attached to the nipple and inspect it for rot. If the vacuum line becomes detached, and you drive through any amount of water, the water will seep into the motor box and corrode the 4WD motors. This will render your 4WD as totally worthless. You try and put it in 4WD, and all you will see is flashing Hi and Lo lights. It will never go into gear. The only fix is to buy a used differential and replace it. For some reason, Toyota put the plastic box together with self tapping Phillip's head screws! So if you live in the salt belt like I do, the screws are rotted beyond belief and you will never be able to remove them to inspect the electric motors. Another tip: Check the rear pumpkins vent valve. They love to get all rusted up and seal themselves closed. If this happens, your rear end will be unable to vent the pressure and will eventually cause the axle seals to leak. Another caveat of living in the salt belt.

A few years ago, I bought a 2002 Toyota Tundra 4X4 Limited extended cab (leather interior, step rails, power everything, and bed liner) for around $6500. It had 132,000 miles on it. I immediately changed the timing belt, spark plugs, and fuel filter, and flushed the radiator. I regularly change the oil and filter. So, far, it's run beautifully without a single problem. I've been spraying the underbody annually to avoid frame rust. I think rust is the only threat to me getting many, many more miles on this thing.

I have a friend that bought a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 3 l V6/52,000 MI in for $3,000 2 years ago from a woman whose husband died. She had it sitting in the garage for 10 years and kept it running although she didn't drive it very much. It runs like brand new it is Red and it has the Ford chrome wheels.

My landlord had a 94 Silverado with a 350CID and 4 speed automatic. He gave it away for $1,000, says he regrets that decision. I do too, as I overhauled the AC in it, replaced the alternator, battery, serpentine belt and starter. But it was super dependable transport when I needed it to get to work for three school years. It was a Windsor Ontario made, solid vehicle. I should’ve bought it.

2000 silverado bought for $7K i think three years ago. Fuel pump and heater core replaced, did it myself. It's been hit front and rear, not bad. My daily driver, just hit 230K miles. Drives perfect.

I have a 1990 chevy manual c1500 with almost 299,000 miles, paid 750 for it becuase it wasnt running well. Paid 200 to replace the 2 injectors and the muffler, still runs great.

98 Z71 Silverado 117k 5.7 Vortech I like the 4WD for snow and mild off road travel. Light use and probably last more than another decade.

My 95 Winnebago is on 94 Chevy chassis and that parts availability and simplicity was part of the reason why I chose it. As far as fuel economy, I’ve never seen anyone in a forum for rvs mention having a class A that got anymore than around 12mpg.

As a truck driver I delivered engines to an auto plant once. They unloaded straight to assembly lines. 2 lines side by side. Mazda and ranger. They are the same truck. Only a couple cosmetic changes such as the badges were different.

Since 1991, all I've owned are 88-98 GMT400's. Thirteen of them to date and the two I have now are a '92 C1500 GMC Sierra 5.7L with just 135,000 miles and my work truck is a GMT400 Bodied 1999 C2500 with 167,000 on the truck and just 2,300 miles on the NAPA 5.7 with 36,000 mile 3 year warranty. All trucks built since the GMT400's in the GM lineup are, in my humble opinion, disposable trucks. Yes...there are always exceptions to the rule, but they're way more expensive to maintain and repair and repairs are more frequent. I'll stick with what works! Cheers! Zip~

aint no new f250 going for $35k these days. I like how Scotty is being modest, but whomever got that for 3500 got a flat out steal. Even if we go back to 2001 pricing they were still bare minimum 35k which when inflated brings it to about 57k in todays pricing. Trucks are not cheap...

I have an 86 Bronco xlt. It has 127k original miles. 2 small rust spots. All original interior. Fully loaded. Has a 302. Runs amazing! Been running it daily for 2 years now. Completely trouble free. Best 3k i ever spent!

Scotty, I have a '79 GMC I bought for $800. It runs good, no suspension problems, the auto tranny shifts predictably but the fuel mileage in town not carrying anything is only 18 with the 350 cu in (not bad really). A southern truck, never seen salt and I put an Alabama "antique tag" on it. Just one rusty spot where it was scratched on the bumper. Now, many people didn't like "square bodied trucks", but that I what I grew up with and I prefer them. I have a '90 Ford Ranger that has no rust, cost me 1,800 bucks when I bought it with cash, 2.3L engine, Mazda 5 speed with a fiberglass box on it, 22 around town and 26 highway with only 186,000 miles on it, EFI (I wish it was normally aspirated because changing #3 plug you have to take apart the throttlebody which is a pain in my back ( literally). I'm 65, Don't drive much anymore, just around town. I only buy gas for it once a month, but the paint is in good shape, I sprayed bar and chain oil on the chassis to stop any unseen rust, but it gets me around just fine. I change engine oil, diff, and tranny fluids every year just for the fun of it! This keeps the moisture and "rust dust" out of the fluids than can ruin the drive train. The '90 Ranger is a "square-body" too, so I really like it. I even bought new Radio cassette players for both that can take a thumb drive, some Chinese knockoff that was the copy of a JVC in dash so I can listen to the real classic rock oldies we both grew up with. I am an Amateur Radio enthusiast , so the ladder racks each carries all sorts of antennas without drilling holes in the body - really neat! I dislike the new trucks efforts at "streamlining" the body - they look ugly to me and really cost way too much. 73's Scotty ( best wishes in "Ham Speak").

That F250 is our truck, but in 4x4. It was from a construction company woo heavy spec'd it, and then it ended up with after market skid plates that would pass as armour. It's a real trooper. We had the same Chevy t1500 as well, but set up for oil field work. True dual exhaust on that one. Our daughter loved taking that one to school.

I have the 2002 Silverado and it’s solid. Steel doors and none of that fancy electronics. Needed some wear and tear parts but that’s it.

I had an 4.7L 03 Tundra for 10 years. I did tree work with it for 5 years (towing a trailer full of logs most days) and always did the regular maintenance. I had studded winter tires (I live in Quebec, and it was RWD) and it was a beautiful reliable truck. A month ago a brake line failed (human error) and it was declared a total loss. Waiting for them to tow it away feels like when I had to have my dog put down. It tears at my heart strings so much. Rest In Peace, both of my beautiful beasts 🐕 🛻

I just bought a 1998 Chevy k1500 4x4 extended cab..it spent its whole life in Ohio and it’s rust free..it’s all about taking care of your vehicle and getting them undercoated for rust prevention.

I have a 98 toyota t100 and it has always been a good truck for me. I've had it 11 years. When I bought the truck it had 80,000 miles and i have put 200,000 miles on it. I try my best to change the oil between 3000 and 5000 miles. And get a transmission flush a couple times a year. Just changed the water pump and all the belts and gave it a new starter spark plugs and coil packs. Truck still runs like when I bought it.

I have this same Ford.. Except mine is 2002 F350 extended cab, with 7.3L diesel and 6spd manual 4x4. These trucks were the best trucks Ford ever made. I have 330k miles on mine and she's just warming up.

I love my 97 c1500 4.3. It runs perfect with 150k miles. It actually gets decent gas mileage which is important in these times. I’m never getting rid of it. Maybe LS swap it some day.

I have a 1998 f-150 with a 4.2 liter V6 and a 5 speed manual transmission. I've had it for a few months, when I bought it, it had 248,000 miles, and I'm convinced that it'll make to at least 500,000 miles if not a million. The only problem I've had with it so far that wasn't just cosmetic was a leak in the plastic part of the radiator that that I patched with JB weld. The thing purrs like a kitten. It's solid white, I named him Shadowfax after Gandalf's horse 😁😁

My 1984 GMC High Sierra 4 by 4 with 350 and manual transmission is still my beauty. Having a 7.5' western snow plow makes it even more popular in the winter. It only talks to people with cash. Just got a new mechanical fuel pump on but haven't found time for the test drive. Something to live for.

Had to sell my 2013 Tundra Platinum crew cab for $26.4K under 100K miles. Would not have sold it, but going through a divorce and had to. It was the best vehicle I have ever owned. Bought a 2003 4runner limited V8 cash as a replacement. Toyota makes the best vehicles folks. Never buy garbage if the prices are similar.

2005 F150 on our end. 5.4l with 262,000 on it. . Trans was replaced about 30k ago. Engine still runs strong. Did recently do a timing job . Chains, tensioners and phasers using all Ford stuff.

My 93 Ranger 4.0L Has 133k on her. I just recently flushed out the radiator 8 times w water and then the Prestone flush chemical last time. After that, I flushed out the heater core with a high pressure garden hose. Put in new coolant. Changed oil. Preventive Maintenance is key. I hope to have this Ranger for another 10 years or more.

I have a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 l V8 4x4 240,000 mi runs perfect. I see no reason why it won't still be running perfect at 300,000 mi. Currently building the suspension and thinking about getting a new transmission.

I used to have a 1993 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 V-8. I sold it back in 2015 with 386000 miles and she was still really freaking strong. No major engine work or any major transmission work done to it. I was able to get 325 miles on a full tank of gas.

A couple years ago I bought a 2001 Ford Expedition with 169.00 miles on it for 2500, Interior was immaculate and nothing worse than gravel chips on the exterior. I spent a couple grand redoing the from end, barges roters and shocks. Did coolant and fluid change and the car drives like a new one. I am keeping it as my get out of town car. I had one of these new but really did not like the rear seat not folding down into the floor like one I had a couple years before, bought it used and can't remember the year but all the seats folded flat into the floor, loved that one, don't remember why I got rid of it. I retired with a Toyota Sienna the I drove for 10 years after I retired, went to Rav 4 that I drove for 6 years and moved to a Highlander this year. Wife drive for me now just got too old and lame to be the best driver so we got all the new safety aids and she is happy, so I am.

Scotty. The 99-03 7.3 is one indestructible truck. Btw 99-16 seat will fit the 99-03. door panels etc. whole interior will fit..

My Mother bought a 1988 Ford Rander XLT with he Cologne V6...it had 850,000+ verified miles before it was taken off road due to rust in frame. The engine still started right up ran fine. The only thing we ever did to it was put new valve cover gaskets in it and spark plugs every 100k. Kept the oil fresh. Couldn't kill that engine. It was a fast little truck too! Ford DOES put good engines in their cars and trucks no joke.

Last year got my 175k mile granny gear manual 460 1990 4x4 F 250 running registered again. Awesome beast.

Not sure how all of Scotty’s customers are getting trucks so cheap, especially with the car shortage. Everyone here in California wants an arm and leg for used trucks even with 200k-300k.

My Nissan hardbody has been going strong for over 30 years! The odometer stopped working after it ticked over 300,000 miles. Replaced the timing chain, radiator, all the bushings / shocks and AC it's like a new truck

I own a 97 K1500 with the 350 & I'm in the process of rebuilding the truck for those very reasons you mentioned Scott. It's my daily work truck & I plan to get another one this summer & do the same thing. It's worth rebuilding because it's still cheaper than buying a new truck. I'm in St Louis, MO & even with our weather you see a ton of those Chevy trucks on our roads.

Hay scotty I have a 98 ford ranger with 250000 miles it still runs and drives like new I mean new it idols smoother than any new truck on the road when it comes to small trucks I think the older ford ranger with the 3.0 or 4.0 are one of the best you can buy.

I have two 1970 Chevy trucks. One is a C10 short bed stepside with a straight 6 and the other is aC20 long bed fleetside with a 350 and both have a 4 on the floor. I drive them both on a regular basis and besides doing routine maintenance on them I never have any problems. They are both super reliable and easy to work on. I don’t foresee myself ever having to buy another truck until I’m so old I can’t drive anymore.

I got a 2006 Ram 1500 4.7L with a check engine light. Got it for $1,800 in 2021. Fixed the CEL and with 246k miles it's great.

So right Scotty. I have a 94 GMC that I bought new (in Texas $3k cheaper than here in La.) and it has 156k miles on it and all I have ever had replaced was a water pump and fuel pump and still going strong and I have offers to buy it constantly.

Chevy v8 engines will run literally for ever if you have one of those t56 6 speed manual which has a reputation for being bullet proof you cant go wrong. I have a 1993 camaro z28 bought it 20 years ago with 50k miles on it when I just graduated high school I was the second owner. today it has 956k miles on it original engine and transmission. even the suspension is original except I had to change the. shock absorbers a few times but it still drives like its brand new has plenty of power. I had to change the exhaust cause it rusted out. and I had to change the optispark a few times but I upgraded that to a holley terminator and got rid of the optispark distributor.

My91f150 is over 300,000 Can't say it runs great, but it still goes!

I bought a 1972 Ford F-150 4x4 long box custom for 900.00 bucks with 150k. It has the 4speed granny low transmission with the 2 speed transfer case. The truck is straight as a arrow and it has the 390 , 4 barrel holly carb. The engine was rebuilt and I knew of the mechanic that did the work BUT the engine has a camshaft problem. I’ve had fords in the past and have worked a lot on FE motors so I plan on going into the motor to see what the issue is and inspect the overhaul. And I knew about this before I purchased it. The plan is to install a new cam and lifters that’s a given. But for me it’s a haul truck and won’t be driven much. And the drivetrain is bulletproof. Another project 🤪👍

Dogs & I love my '94 C1500 Suburban. It sounds & feels SO good! Rides smooth & handles shockingly good for it's weight & age. Everything about it is so cheap that it makes the 10-12 mpg's well worth it. I bought it because my '14 prius blew it's head gasket & would cost more to fix than an old truck would be to purchase.

Bought my 92 Toyota 4x4 truck brand new. 4 cyl, 5 spd manual. Currently has 422,000 miles. Orig engine, orig transmission, never rebuilt. Truck has only had basic maintenance in last 30 years. Still runs like a champ. Has never left me stranded. 3000 mi oil changes, hoses/belts replaced at scheduled intervals. Little things like water pump, alternator, radiator have been replace a time or three.

I bought a $300 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 RWD off of a customer I towed last year, before a 2018 Tesla Model S knocked me off of my 2021 Suzuki Katana. Now I daily the Explorer with ? miles while I wait for the settlement. I've refreshed most of the mechanical components, now I'm working on the AC...runs like a dream.

My current truck is a 1993 Chevy 1500 with the 5.7 350 and 5 speed manual transmission. I bought it for $2,100 with 179,000 miles on it a little over 4 years ago. The odometer broke about a month ago at 203,000 miles. Since i bought it i put a new radiator, water pump, hoses, distributor, clutch, tune ups, oil changes (all done myself). A shop put a new front end on it and alignment. Its not pretty to look at, but it runs like a horse. Very well built truck worth every penny i put into it.

That interior at 150k is horrendous. My 2007 tundra with 215k looks fine with the seart not all screwed up. No way I'd buy that. 15 years in my tundra, hoping for 18 before it becomes too rusty. Nj sucks
