Marlin Model 60SB from 2003 is up next.....the modern version of the Model 60 has a few more bells and whistles (last round bolt hold open) but also suffers from cheaper materials (birch wood stock) and cheaper construction (impressed checkering) but thankfully still maintains it's reliable feeding and great performance. Strange that after all this time it still shatters the buffers.....what's the story there? I used the video tutorial linked below to follow along and change mine and spared you my horrible footage.....the video below was much better.
CloverTac video on Marlin Model 60 Buffer Replacement:

Thanks for tuning in.....see you next time.

I bought one a few years ago and it was screwed up. Threw it in the corner and bought another one, this time a Glenfield 60 with the squirrel stock and it works great. Even has the old matching Glenfield scope.

Bought a Marlin 60 the year I got out of high school. But I didn`t like it very much. Traded it in on a Ruger 10/22. Still have the 10/22.

The Ruger might have the edge, I agree, BUT.....is it named after a fish? No. I rest my point.

@@MilsurpGarage The model 60 I had tended to jam. Took it to a local gunsmith who said he thought he knew what the problem was and could fix it pretty easy. But when I saw he had that Ruger 10/22 Deluxe Sporter sitting on the rack, I traded for it. Love Marlin`s lever guns and I like their bolt actions too, but I`ve stayed away from their autos since then.

I have 3 of the 11,000,000 units manufactured. Excellent accuracy and functionality. Beautiful elegant design. Mine are stainless with laminated birch stocks. Two gray one brown. Two 22” barrel one 19” . All scoped with very nice scopes one 4x Leupold rimfire special one Nikon 3x9 one 4x Simmons . All are tack drivers and will shoot all day without fail. I keep mine impeccably clean and ready at all times . Never had one issue with buffer with any long rifle ammunition. I also have a 10 -22 custom deluxe walnut sporter very nice with Redfield 22 special 4x. They are non buffer designed and tend to wear receiver where pins pass through behind bolt and also trigger mount pins. But I always seem to grab one of my Marlins.

Interesting. What are the age of them and how long have you had them? The buffers simply fall apart due to age and hardening, not really from ammunition damage. They all did that….the old ones. Maybe they have all been replaced already with new softer fresh ones?

Here is a note for home smiths, there is now a company that makes a buffer for the Marlin 60’s that just snaps over the cross pin.
@MilsurpGarage
@MilsurpGarage 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I did mention it somewhere in one of my soap opera videos on this topic, but found out way too late to spread the word much. Two things. You still have to take the old one off and if it snaps on, it can also snap off.

@@MilsurpGarage the one buffer advertised that I had watched was a demonstration of the old one being removed. It showed the installer finish chipping the remaining old buffer out with a screwdriver in order to install the snap on replacement. Not ever having to do this installation this reply is only from observation.👍✌🏻🇺🇸

Please, please, don't get me started on NJ! when I was growing up in NYC, I thought that NJ had the max possible number of idiots/sq. mile, and nothing since has changed my mind. Look at their laws on black powder firearms and archery: how many drive-by shootings in Newark used cap and ball revolvers, and how many holdups are done with a bow and arrow? Lunacy! To get back to the Marlin issues: I believe the advantage of the 10-22 over the Marlin 60 is the rotary magazine. In the past I had a Marlin Papoose, which was an excellent rifle until the magazine developed feeding issues that were not solvable. My Marlin 39A is a very nice rifle, but is in a different category, having a long barrel, and being significantly heavier than 10-22's - about as heavy as a centerfire rifle. This is not bad, but IMO moves it into a different category. While there may be much to like about a Marlin 60, I believe the 10-22 has clearly superior engineering and functionality.

I have pretty much eliminated Stinger ammo from every range trip using rifles and only use them in my .22 revolvers now. You would destroy your recoil buffer in no time using Stingers in that Marlin. Thanks for tuning in!

I'm with you on the pressed checkering technique. My 1st Marlin-Glenfield 60 had the pressed checkering and it was the only thing about the entire rifle I didn't like. My 2nd rifle is a Marlin 60W, an almost exact clone but it features the hold open bolt after last shot and NO checkering. It's better without the pressed checkering. I'd prefer a 60 with walnut stock and CUT checkering but not sure they ever made one like that?

Not a chance. They get old and brittle. I bought NOS (new old stock) buffers once in the original sealed Marlin packaging…..shattered like glass they were so brittle. It’s material degradation from age.

I love the Marlin 60- every bit as good a d reliable as a 10/22 as long as you keep it clean and keep the ejector wire in place. Two things that cause issues on these, gunk in the chamber and messed up ejector wire- if you put it together with the bolt forward, it will bend the ejector wire, causing jams. Also, some had too much paint in the receiver causing the bolt to be sticky. I would stone the bolt flat to polish it a little, clean the paint out of the inside of the receiver where the bolt runs, and keep the ejector wire set correct, and the 60 will run like a singer sewing machine. I sold both of my 60’s but I’ll buy another if I find the right year range again. I like the ones with the 20” barrel, larger magazine, and the last shot bolt hood open. I think they’re in the 1980’s before they bowed to NJ gun laws and shorten the barrel and magazine

Thanks for tuning in. I also have videos up on the Marlin 99 M1 and 989 M2, both from the model 60 series. I’ve had really good luck overall with these except for the buffers. I always find them in pieces after purchasing the rifles. In my opinion, the 10/22 is a step ahead due to that buffer thing.

@@MilsurpGarage yeah. Both the 10/22 and 60 have good things going for them. I like both equally, but the aftermarket for the 10/22 makes it somewhat more appealing.. I have 5 10/22’s and only I have changes stocks, barrels, charging handles, sights, etc and they’re just so easy…
