Today for a bit of a change we aren't doing any colloection because we're already loaded to the max! After a giant scrap metal pickup we need to deliver it and get paid, so instead of blasting through it, let's spend some time at the scrapyard and really get into what a scrap metal recycling trip looks like!
Wire stripper I use: amzn.to/3jrO2iS
The motorized stripper: amzn.to/3y0JMuQ
The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW
This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2SwrYsB
And here are those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)
Please like/share this video if you enjoyed it, and subscribe to thubprint!

From your friends on the other side of the border, Otter Lake, Michigan. I was in a similar situation helping a couple in their 70's clear out a house. I haul a 8' X 20' trailer and am on my 3rd load. Feeling similar to you about the amount money being earned, on the four return to their property, I told the couple I would leave the trailer with them for a week, with the stipulation, I did not care what they put in it. What ever it is, I dispose of it. Knowing I would be making a trip to the land fill, I figured it would help them with an overwhelming situation. Otherwise, my scrapping methods are not much different than yours, picking curbside, bring it home, sorting it, processing / cleaning and categorizing. The biggest improvement over the last two years I've made that really improved my hauls is the purchase and use of a plasma cutter. Harbor Freight special, about $700. I now even cut up steel car rims for short steel. And as you've experienced it those little treasures that keep me looking for scrap everywhere I go. Case in point, spot a metal folding chair, as I pick it up, I notice a box full of 18 / 20 gage wire. So I grab it too. About a week later, after searching ebay and Facebook Market place looking for a stereo system for my scrapping shop, I get around to processing that box of wire. Low and behold under that wire was Sony 5 speaker surround sound system, including subwoofer. How spooky can that be to get such a gift from the curbside gods, knowing I was market for such a system. 👍🏻 Oh ya, I'm hooked.

That’s some amazing serendipity! I think that’s my favourite part of all of it, being immersed in the constant flow of materials gives opportunities for stuff like that to happen. The plasma cutter would be a big investment but I can see how it would be a game changer on a lot of items simply through time saved!

It is more than fair to keep it all for yourself. If you didn't do it he probably would have had to hire someone, or do it himself. So you've either saved him time, literally days, or saved him a fair amount of money. Some of these jobs you could possibly earn a labor fee as well. Remember, you're worth more than just scrap metal.

An enjoyable vid Thub! 👍👍 I've actually sold Mercury switches through my shop before - around $10 each! Not sure what people use them for! 🤔 The other thing isn't really a rock guard - it's a knife finger, which has a ledger plate on which a reciprocating knife runs across to provide a cutting action for mowing/harvesting etc. There would have been a row of them on the old sickle mower you took to the yard. Unnecessary information? Yeah - you'll get that from me! 🤣🤣

What are they paying for a ton(gross ton some places)of #1 steel where you go? Right now it's 175 a gross ton for me. Light Iron isn't that far behind it these days either where I go. I think it's 145 a gross ton. You're nicer than me, a good amount of what I saw you throw for light I would have tossed as heavy and they would have been completely ok with it. Well, idk how much but enough that I wouldn't have thrown it as light.
