On February 14th 2023,
A scrap train consisting of R46 cars 6150-6151 and R142 cars 6346-6350 were towed out of the 207th Street Yard in Manhattan to transfer over to the Concourse Yard in the Bronx for storage and security system trainings. The Consist was towed on the yard lead out from the 207th street yard and operated down the (A) line to the 135th street Spur track in Manhattan. After the consist made its way to the 135th street spur track, the consist switched onto the (D) line, operating up the line throughout Concourse to the Concourse Yard in the Bronx.

R46 cars 6150-6151 were heavily damaged upon a train derailment at the 125th Street station on the 8th avenue line in Manhattan on June 27th, 2017. R142 cars 6346-6350 suffered severe damage at the 110th Street station on the 7th avenue line in Manhattan after a shopping cart being set afire on one of the train cars from an enraged person on March 27th, 2020. Both R46 and R142 cars were permanently removed from service as a result from both incidents. *Read The Description* for more information regarding this consists transfer.

A-Division cars are narrow as 10 1/2' wide; some B-Division cars are 11' and some cars are 12' wide.

It's weird seeing an R46 coupled to an R142 didnt even know that was possible, seeing that R142 set makes me sad too. they probably shouldn't leave the doors open like that too someone could just hop in

The R142 and the R46 lead cars are probably connected with an adapter. The couplers of those rolling stocks are different. I am displeased that a half set of an R142 train is subject to disposal. My only hope is that the R262 rolling stock will be produced just for the A-Division.

@@toters2724 Also, I believe that cars 6346 and 6348 can be buffed up, even polished. A new railcar can be made like 6347. I do not feel sad that 6347 was seriously damaged, but I do feel bad that the damage is done.

A-Division rail cars can fit well on B-Division tracks, but B-Division railcars cannot fit on A-Division tracks.

I highly doubt that the scored 142 unit could have been brought back to service via rebuild or as a totally brand new unit. Bombardier Rail doesn’t exists as a private company and I doubt their successor Alstom would want to repair them or cover the costs. And in house repair at Coney Island wouldn’t happen, I don’t think the TA has the capabilities or willing to put up funds to do so. It is sad to watch a train unit less than two decades in service go out this way, it’s terrible how it happened and the life taken with it.

That R142 car numbered 6347 is irreparable. A new group of R142, numbered from 6346 up to 6350, would be in order. Cars 6346, 6348, even 6349 can be touched up, as the stainless steel surfaces are not badly damaged.

The R46 set should pretty much be scrapped since they’re pretty much gonna be retired soon anyway. R142 set 6346-6350 however is much sadder. Not only did the 2020 Inferno claim the life of Train op Garret Goble, it also happened on a New Tech. I sincerely hope that when the R142’s undergo a mid-life overhaul, 6346-6350 is rebuilt and renumbered so that it can return to service again, and maybe even be wrapped in the memory of Mr. Goble, who gave his life to evacuate the passengers from the blazing inferno. Rest in peace, Garret Goble.

Both damaged rolling stock will be reserved as spare and replacement parts for other railcars if needed.

@@captainkeyboard1007 I highly doubt it. The R142 set was charred out and is a total write-off. The R46 is a separate issue. And besides, there are enough cars to cover the losses.

@@TheRailLeaguer Only the second north motor, which was 6347 that was severely damaged. The other motors, 6346, 6348, 6349, were scorched, and 6350, was unaffected by the fire. Thank you for tapping or typing to me.

It would be very nice if 6346-6350 gets refurbished by sending it to Kawasaki and converting it to an R142A as a special unit. If it does, the Kawasaki Plant in Yonkers should give that whole set the same exact specifications as how it appears on the R142A’s/R188’s. They should also receive the same exact HVAC Systems that appear on the R143/R160 Fleet which will be very exciting to see the first IRT NTT Subway Cars have these type of HVAC Systems and I hope that the R262’s get them.

There is only one stipulation. Car 6347 is definitely destroyed. The exterior and interior are irreplaceable.

I remember the media tried to pass a photo of the derailment of the 1997 of another A train at 135 th st as the derailment A train at 125 st But the video you can clearly see the R 46s can still operate in the transfer train The R 44 in the 1997 derailment was not so lucky In that derailment only the cab only part of the train left intact the rest of the car was destroyed when it hit the wall It show you what a piece of garbage the R 44 was and the R 46 was built like a tank saving lives

The set is most certainly not coming back to service anytime soon as the damages these cars suffered from are unrepairable.

They did for some time; however, as you can see, it’s quite damaged. Vandals have also since gotten to it. The only purpose of 6151 was just to test features for use in the NTT fleet. Since most features are not present in the existing fleet, they’re pretty much done using it.

Public stations do not close while locomotives move throughout the system, although service can be delayed while they happen, which is why the MTA chooses to do most moves during the night when service slows down.

it was only stripped for parts there and it's shown very clearly as 6346-6350 (except for 6347 and one of the roof AC thingies on iirc 6346) are missing the roof ACs, 6346 is missing a small piece of metal in the front, and 6350 is missing part of its roof. It seems like part of this set was used to repair 6633 as I saw that particular set a while back and it seemed to be missing something but I wasn't entirely sure, but I did see a video of it a while back and it seems to have been fixed now

Ok first of all: What time you took that video? Second: I think the R46 was from the 2017 A Train crash. MAYBE. And the R142 Is obviously from that fire in 2020, it’s so sad that these trains were used and end up being scrapped or not even being used or fixed.

no it sadly looks like it's totaled. it could be possible but if the WHOLE set was restored.. it would take probably the amount of time it took to repair R143 8277... and uh by that point the R142s would start to be close to retirement

Car 6346, 6348, 6349 and 6350 may be salvaged, but car 6347 would need to be replaced, as it is severely destroyed and cannot be repaired nor restored to its original appearance.
