IME the key to using any scraper plane is to place no downward pressure on the tote. I have the Veritas, an old Stanley, the little LN 112 and this is true of all of them. Your two contact points are the blade and the sole in front of it. I push the little 112 but pull the others.

I own many vintage Stanley planes and Stanley planes of all sizes and types with others names on them. I own a large handful of Lie Nielson and 1 Veritas jointer plane with a attachable fence. I like all of them but the Veritas jointer was smooth out of the box, well designed. I have other items and tools from Veritas, the sharpening jig and so on. The people who design Veritas tools are thinkers for sure, Veritas tools are top notch. But I still like my antiques. Good comparison video👍.

I have the Lie-Nielsen and I love it. I would recommend to anyone that gets it to start with the iron adjusted to 20 degrees forward from vertical and adjust for the species you're scraping from there.

i have the veritas of course. haven't used it much yet. i got it used and it came with both irons. the thicker iron is still wrapped up as it came from LV!

This is one of my favorite Veritas planes. I think they did a great job it. Skew 🐇 block is my favorite I think but 👍👍

Do you have any thoughts on the standard Veritas vs the Veritas small scraping plane? I'm thinking about getting the small one because I find that when I use a scraper it tends to be on smaller parts that are awkward to sand with power sanders. I don't typically scrape wide panels and such that I imagine the larger scraper planes are better suited for (though maybe I would i I get a good scraping plane)

At 12:54 into video you should have shown a comparison of the different scraper planes in action. Your viewers are intelligent enough to weigh the results even with the differences in blade thicknesses. Don't put your thumb on the Veritas scale, as a reviewer you want to leave your biases aside and let the facts and data speak for themselves. Remember you have viewers out there where price is not the most important factor in purchasing a once in a lifetime tool. Other than that miss, overall great video Thanks!

I'd probably go with the Veritas and see if I can make a thicker iron for it.

At 12:40 into video, Lie-Nielsen has a lifetime warranty on their products. If it breaks, just send it back to the factory and they will fix the tool.

I liked the comparison and I understand why you didn't want to show each one in action. But you could have shown a before board with terout and an after board NO tearout? so people can judge if they need a scraper plane. Personally I have Veritas and Stanley and lean to the Veritas.

This was very useful, thanks 👍While I'll still keep my eyes open for a Stanley it would be Veritas all the way for me... and not just because the L-N is so much more, but also that! My hands are I guess on the larger side of medium and there's sure to not be enough room because of that thumbscrew if the blade needs to be canted that far forward typically. Even if they intend for the blade to be used more vertically* I can't understand why they made the shaft that long, it's not like it requires a lot of travel to work - locking screws like this only need to be long enough to equal the thickness of the cap + projection on the blade side + a little extra under the head so fingertips don't feel cramped. *Might cause clearance issues at the back!

Why is there no adjustable throat opening? Tare out not an issue with scraping like it is with planing??

Wonder if veritas raises the prices to Americans. The plane is 240CAD which is like 175US. Noticed they just came back in stock been debating getting one. That Lie Nelson does look nice though
