Real Life Sewing with Kids: Fleece Soft Toy

The plan for my last video didn’t go to plan. I enlisted the help of my 3-year-old to do fleece remnants unboxing and then I wanted him to help me make some simple fleece projects….it was a hard no to the projects.
He loved doing the unboxing which you can see here: • Fleece Fun! Fleece Re...
But when it came to working on a project with me he knew what he wanted it to be - a fleece penguin!
I really want to encourage my kids to learn to sew so even though it wasn’t the quick win, done in 3 seams project I had envisaged for us I decided to roll with it.
This is our fly-on-the-wall documentary-style sewing session. Follow along with your kids and make your now fleece penguin or just get a chuckle.
I’ve thrown in some tips for sewing with kids too but honestly, the best recommendations are just to roll with it and make sure they get something finished!

What are your top tips for sewing with kids?

You've got it right. Grow a man from the start. Encourage the creativity, Instill logic and he safety. His own hands and mind in the project. All his own choices made this penguin his. (dang cute too) He is not too young to invent and choose. Good job Mom ))) My grandkids are 2000 miles away. When they were here they learned to spin yarn on a great wheel, and make bobbin lace. I won't see them for years again, but skills get handed down. They've got a good Mom too.

So sweet!! Your son is so cute and smart. I sewed a “monster” with one of my grandsons when he was 8. He picked out the fleece and drew what he wanted and helped sew it on the machine (of course he was older than your son). It was well loved and played with. He’s 15 now and has it on his shelf. A sweet memory for both of us.

(aka Shirley) I have watched a lot of videos and I have to tell you this one had me smiling all the way through.❤ I let my oldest granddaughter use my new Pfaff 4.5 sew a dress for her younger sister. She laid her sister on my bed with fabric underneath her, cut out around her, and sewed up a dress while the rest of my family visited only giving her guidance when she asked for it. (She did forget to leave an opening for the arms LOL) I cannot tell you how impressed I was!!! I was able to take a picture of her sister in the dress. What a great memory you will have as the years pass quickly. Years ago we weren't able to preserve these special moments. I wish I could find the words to let you know and others know (with today's technology) we can look back and remember the special moments. Warning....you will need tissues. Thank you so much 💞💞

Love that! What a great way to draw a pattern! A lovely memory for all of you. My dad took home movies of us (in the 80’s) but we don’t have lots of them left. We definitely are lucky with all our tech these days! Thanks for watching!

You have a lot of patience and a lot of good tips for sewing with kids. I haven't tried sewing with them on my lap. I cut up small scraps of batting and store them in plastic bags (I re-use the bags my fabric purchases come in in the mail). Then we try to tip the bags into our project and laugh at the mess we make when some of it escapes. Loved your penguin. Thanks for sharing

Loved this! I let my 3 yr old granddaughter sit on my lap to hit the scissors button too. Can’t wait til she can participate in a project like this. ❤

He has used my other machine to sew fabric together in his attempt at a quilt top - still ongoing and very improv 😂 - but if I want a line to go even semi straight he has to be on my lap!

I love this! You are teaching him something he might not learn otherwise (or maybe they teach guys to sew in school, I’m not sure). I know you are making memories that are absolutely priceless!

I’ve been visiting and sewing 5” squares with my granddaughters this week, 3 and 5 years old. We used one charm pack and they wanted to do more 😊. It’s great fun!
