Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am recreating this strange mechanism that looks like some kind of stamping machine. It has a somewhat complex linkage system with no measurements for reference, meaning I'm going to try to eyeball everything

Maybe this mechanism could be some kind of clamp maybe in a production line? Like it picks up an item and moves it to another layer, or maybe puts a cap on a bottle or smth

From what I can tell, the amount it goes down is based on the total length of the two blue lines that are connected to the motor, and the amount it goes to the side is based of the difference between their lengths. The final blue line can be adjusted to to change the difference in angle between all the way down and all the way left. Those seem the easiest to adjust to refine the motions. I'm also surprised Scrap Mechanic can even handle this whole system

The path of the output looks like the rotation of 0 degrees to 90 degrees(when the two yellow lines connect) .So the green line connects to the two yellow lines as an intersection of two lines,there are two yellow lines that connect to two bigger yellow lines that kind of doubles the movement of the green lines movement. I've seen this linkage before in a youtube vid clip which uses the mechanism as a placing mechanism using a magnet and at the end of the movement,the cubes disconnects from the magnet.I think you'll like Arglin Kampling,he knows a lot of mechanisms.types of mechanisms Arglin Kampling knows are linear,aproximate linear,reverser and walking mechanisms.if you want another walking mechanism, it's the strider linkage!!.the path of the leg is an oval with a smooth bottom,to make a smooth walker,you need to have 3 or 4 strider linkages to even walk smoothly.I imagine Scrapmans version of the strider walker is going to be chaos with the 3 or 4 legs.(Btw the linkage he made was called a pick & place mechanism).

This is one type of machine used to apply labels onto something. It grabs a label from a dispenser and either applies glue as it swings down or presses onto a preglued surface. Ex. a box or carton would be on a conveyor and when a sensor detects it's under the press, the motor turns once and applies the label. It can also be used to place unformed sheets of material such as metal or cardboard onto a conveyor.
@elimeth4230

id imagine if you had a conveyor belt at the bottom maybe the mechanism has like some suction cup or grabber at the end, grabs the item and brings it upwards to another belt, what purpose? who knows, vertical transport, sorting system maybe? thats just my thought when i saw it.

The real problem of this mechanism wasn't just the rotating arm, it was the base the rotating arm sits on. The rotating arm needs to be a bit further away to change the ratio of movement in the apogee and perigee, right now the "horizontal" move is farther than the "vertical", moving the rotating arm a bit further away will fix that.
@MrRangiku01
@MrRangiku01 Жыл бұрын
So a fix on this contraption would be to extend the rotation arm approximately 3 blocks and put a pivot at the fixed point on the slider/stamp bar so it acts more like a balanced scissor joint

my first thought, after it worked: the bottom light blue "leg" is to long. As far as I can tell, shortening it, would cause the mechanism to dip down further. In the top down view (around 12:00) you can see, that it is more than 80% of the length to the right hard point. But the one in the example video only is about 2/3 of it.

I think it would be better if instead of making the diagonals pixelated, you made them straight and changed the angle with a powered bearing and then unpowered it when everything is built. I don't know much about the game so I don't know if it would be harder or even possible, but it would definitely be more accurate.

Unfortunately scrap mechanic doesn't allow to weld pieces that aren't on the grid. You need to place your creation on the lift to weld it to itself, and controllers don't work when on the lift. Also, when you make a shape, you HAVE to use the weld tool because the last side will not snap to a bearing on the first side.

I didn't expect it to work in SM, but you surprised me, great job The size of the mechanism doesn't matter that much, only thing that have to be exact is the length of the lower blue beam, it should be same as the frame middle joint position: If frame have three points at [0,0] [a,a] [c,d], then blue bar length should be "a", this way, stamp will rotate exactly 90° Size of the yellow scissor mechanism doesn't matter, as long as it is symmetrical Length of the TOP blue bar should be enough to move the sway and move mechanism, your first try was almost perfect, except this bar was too short, which cause it to NOT extend when the stamp was in lower position I hope you will make something like this again, try making it in multiplayer to see who can replicate it best

I believe, 'Build a Boat for Treasure' is better for those joint contraptions then. (since you complained) Some tools cost a bit of gold, but some are obtainable at a secret location for free. (IDK, if the latter is still true) But why do I suggest that? Well, the blocks can be adjusted to a 1/10 of its original size, and with the screwdriver tool, the collision can be turned off, making it possible to make the whole contraption on a single 2D plane. (the only issue is to save the build in a way where none of the blocks touch each other)

as Scrap metal ..., pardon me, i mean scrapman, mentioned in the video: a very common misconception for games that only let you strictly build on a grid is that people think they cannot build struts on a diagonal that are attached by an axis on each end. you can always build the "strut" in any shape you want AS LONG as the two axis on each end are exactly where you need them to be. just a horizontal line and a vertical line, leading from one axis point to the other. physics do not care what shape your strut is at the end of the day. you just need to make sure the offshoots dont collide with any other piece of your craft, but it should not if all your struts are on their own Layer, viewed Face-on.

Very simple mechanism that iirc traces back to Pythagoras and has the nickname "nothing grinder". Can also be used to teach how any point on a circle that's rolling on the inside of a circle with twice its diameter, will always travel in a straight line to and from the opposite side of the larger circle. How I believe it'd be easiest to build: Have a motor rotating at the center point of the larger circle, let's say clockwise from the viewing angle. Halfway the radius, so at the center of the smaller circle, have it rotate twice the speed in the other direction, so counter-clockwise in my example. This will make the smaller circle roll in the larger circle. In the standard 2-grinder version, each grinder is attached to an opposite side of the smaller circle. The arm, which is the power input in real-life versions normally, is basically an extension glued to the smaller circle. To prevent the grinders, just make them rotate in the original direction, so clockwise.
@DendrummerMC

As for how and why I know this in such detail... I once made an animation of a nothing grinder in Blender3D for the practical exam of a 3D modeling class and got the full 20/20 aka 100%. Admittedly I'd been dabbling around in Blender for a few years in my spare time at that point and it was a class for those with 0 prior experience.
