This video is a quick breakdown of what parts can be sold on ebay and how to take them out fairly safely. This is not an all inclusive video.

Hey Moose, I think that what you are doing is unselfish and whether or not you know it, you are teaching unemployed people how to hustle. Keep on keeping on.

Thumbs up for not selling people hard drives / personal information! Not many people realize that these things can happen even if the hard drive has been completely wiped.

DONT DESTROY THE HARD DRIVE! if you store a lot of files, I suggest keeping it and buying an enclosure which will act as a giant flash drive.

Hi moose I found your videos looking up how to refine gold from computers and then I saw all the other metals you can get form other things. It reminded me when I was a kid I loved taking a part think. Now I know I can use this and make a little cash. Thank you

I've been watching your videos for some time now and have learned so much! I'm not a scrapper, I work in the travel industry, desk job....but I can dream! I'm also a small time landlord in a college town....so I've been saving up stuff (that the students leave behind when they move out) in my garage to take apart...one of these days! Just want to say thank you for all the lessons and information. I enjoy your direct "here we go" type instructions. 😀

Don't know where you're located. But I'm in the Pittsburgh area. If you need help or want to get rid of any of your stockpile. I'll help. Your name sounds familiar. I may have done work for you on one of your rentals
@sonyalenz8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Yagoda Wow...that would be pretty wild if you had done some rental work for me. I'm in the Rock (as in Slippery)..semi Pittsburgh area, but a bit of a drive. I'll keep you in mind for unloading stuff....for now I have storage, but my 'becoming a scrapper' dream will likely be unrealized and eventually I'll probably need/want to rid of things. I presently have a copper wire ball the size of a softball...I hope to cash it in when it is about too heavy to lift...adding to it is my "evening winter project"...good thing I don't have a cat, the thing is not soft like yarn and my fingers are all cracked and bloody! Yes, I know I don't have to ball it and can just dump my stripped wire in a 5 gal paint bucket...but where is the fun in that? Happy Day!
@paulyagoda1428 жыл бұрын
+Sonya Lenz yes hold on to that copper for a bit. Hopefully prices will start to come up. Seems like the bottom fell out with almost everything. Copper, aluminum, silver. It's sad to go to the scrap yard right now.

Hey Moose, just a suggestion (if you haven't already thought of it) for improving your chances at selling the cooling fans. You could try marketing them to preppers or Amature Radio Enthusiasts for their Go Boxes. Just a suggestion.

@huxlee29168 жыл бұрын
1. i got your back, there is nooo way to 100% wipe a hard drive, there are good programs that can do a awesome job, but not 100% awesome, data bits will always be left behind. DESTORY THE HARDDRIVES. 2. what you can do for the case if scratched...sand it, then prime and paint it a awesome color, and sell it as a custom case. 3. thanks for another cool vid.

Great Video. I find the best way to maximize the money you make is sell these parts in lots. At least for the older parts.

Moose these cookie cutter pc's mostly have custom motherboards(mobo)/ power supplies (PSU) meaning that you can't just put any mobo/psu in there. Plus you missed the CPU! that can bring in some money on ebay for ppl who are re-building old pc's such as this one and the memory on the mobo! Good stuff Moose keep up the video's!
@moosescrapper59288 жыл бұрын
+Etzio Play crap did I edit out the CPU? Sorry about that. As for the other stuff, the thing I have learned with over ten years of ebay experience is that there is a buyer for everything. It make take a month, but it will sell. People buy these parts for other projects, etc. Thanks for watching!

Hey Moose, Thanks for this video It answered most of the questions I had asked you recently. However please tell me how you check to see if the PC is working. Do you hook it up to a monitor and go through a few windows or do you just see it the PC turns on and lights up. Do you listen for the fan and or heatsink fan running? The truth Moose it is hard to scrap when I live in a one bedroom apt with no real work space or work bench. If I had property I suppose I would be picking, selling and scrapping much more. "One day at a time" brother! Be well...Frank NJ

Actually there is free software you can download and use to low level format hard drives and some will do what's called a 3 pass low level format and this will completely write all sectors of the drive back to all 0's leaving nothing behind. We used it in the military and works well. Search Google for free low level format software. You also said if you scrap it you sell the platters, that's where all the data is stored on the drive.
@moosescrapper59288 жыл бұрын
+Damon Ivy The reports that I have read from the DOD, consumer reports, and some credit agencies have stated that there is no program that is 100% effective. I would rather error on the side of caution but that's just me. As for the resale of the platters, yes the info is stored on them but they are so very sensitive that just smudges from finger oils can destroy them. But taking it a step further, I score each side of the platter so even if someone were to try to recover info, once the reader arm hits that score it would damage the reader arm. Pluse I also hit them with strong magnets.
@lostinlodos8 жыл бұрын
+Moose Scrapper Give my lowly AMD FX system a few hours and I'll recover a good portion of that overwritten data. Even at DOD98 overwrite settings. I do recovery for FREE (just pay shipping both ways) since it doesn't even affect my computing performance to do so. By the way, I'm a vet as well, Army trained and AI credited. Three pass block overwriting is like putting a sign in the middle of the highway centre lane saying road closed, on a Friday night. Your nudie pics are safe from Mr/Mrs Smith but you've just created a slight annoyance for anyone who wants to recover the data for your bank account. As for the platters, if you've gone to that point I'm sure you, moose, will understand this. Create a cabled arc set using dollar store jumper cables and a 9volt lantern battery. Clip A on the outside, clip B on the opposing interior circle. A stack of 5-10 platters right smack in the middle. The amperage is enough to scatter the palladium coating, destroying data. Again, you toss me a dozen platters with finger prints and scratches I, and many others, can still rebuild that data to SOME degree. Zapping it with electricity, (creating both molecular realignment AND thermal damage, AS WELL AS a nice magnetic flow field), no that's data safety. But you could have sold that drive with a simple encryption. low level block format, and a new file system format. :)

I agree with being careful about selling stuff with people's information on it but I heaard that older small harddrives sell fast on Ebay. Is that true?

So I have the head of an old, broken beheaded lightning charger (the one used by most recent Apple devices). It looks like it's gold plated. Is it indeed? How do I extract it?
@moosescrapper59288 жыл бұрын
+Connor Steppie Probably is gold plated, you would need to pull out the metal plated part with pliers or wire cutters. It takes a good pound of plated pins like that to make a gram or two of gold though.

Okay, Moose, help me out here. Pros and cons of ebay over amazon? I don't like that up-front fee that you gotta cough up for ebay, possibly repeatedly if you don't sell on the first try. Is ebay a good enough option that it's worth paying those listing fees?

I would strip and sell on eBay myself, problem with that type of machine, is it is a proprietary system, and the case and motherboard are non standard sizes. The peripherals, ram and CPU would be sellers, not sure about the rest though. But thanks for sharing.
