If you have to remove chips by hand, you can use a utility knife and cut down both sides. If you are accident prone or even a little bit of a klutz, you may want to use another method.

Hello Mike, I'll like to add my suggestion. I'm not from USA, so it might not apply to you. However, some ICs are more valuable when they're in good shape, for example PIC microcontrollers, maybe some I2C eeproms, etc. Also, for the BGA type ICs (the one from 08:35), those can be extracted with the heat gun. It's easy to desolder almost every component from the PCB with the heat gun, since at the right temperature, they will fall off. Maybe there is a great power consumption from using it, and it might not be worth to use. However, good work.

You beat me to it I would only use a desoldering tool as in the video to remove a chip in a repair a quick and dirty method is a paint stripper gun. I've used that on old boards to salvage chips for other units and it works really well.

Mike the Scrapper Trust me the paint stripper gun is your friend. The chips just fall out easy. It can damage components around the chip or the boards so some care is needed but if you just trying to remove chips is fast and easy.

Don’t forget the little black plastic boxes that break open easily to reveal a little copper spool and a couple silver contacts in the switch. Some are different colors, but they crack open easily unlike the solid resin filled look-alike resistors. Also, the little black flat things that are screwed onto the aluminum fins are copper, but coated in plastic, and usually plated in tin or nickel or whatever. Lately I’ve been snipping those off, or they break off, and putting them with copper motors/transformers like someone else pointed out. So they end up in the $0.16/lb. pile instead of the $0.04-0.08/lb. junk. One more thing, what do people do with all the big aluminum cylindrical capacitors? Do yards take those as irony or contaminated aluminum? Or do we just scrap them with the low grade as extra weight? The one yard I went to bought all the leftover low grade as “breakage” for $0.08/lb. 😕 which is better than scrap steel prices anyways.

Go to the Harbor Freight website and search "Micro Flush Cutters". 3 bucks and they are sharp enough at the tips to cut the pins like you did with the screwdriver. The ic chips with thick pins get cut like butter to. Great for cutting zip ties flush as well of course. And after they get a little dull or they start to close at an angle because I cut too much thick metal when I'm too lazy to go get the cable cutters from my tool bag(about 3-6 months of daily use) I take my receipt to HF with the old cutters and get a new pair for free through their lifetime guarantee. Also cut 95% of my wire with these. Even thick TV degaussing cables. They get down into tight spaces getting me that extra inch of wire. You'll love them, believe me.

on the square chips you should use the heat gun to melt the solder and lightly tap the pcb on a hard surface on its side and they simply slide off without them taking damage. then you can sell them on eBay way more because they will still be useable.

this bothers me because I'm a hobbiest and work with circuit boards but you could make more money buy selling the chips to hobbiests. if so it's recommended to ulternate a screw driver from one side to the other until it comes out mostly unscathed. those chips go for a pretty good price in the computer market even if they're used, roughly at or just below $20 a piece. also if you come across a computer power supply you could convert it into a bench power supply for a shop or lab and make $30 or $40 off of it. my dad is a scrapper and I guess I am too but I see more money in repurposing things. and those transformers, if you have rearange the plates to face one way like this (E) with the primary coil on it without the (I) plates they make great electro magnets.

@Nomad-117
@Nomad-117 7 жыл бұрын
William Ela once I get them off I have a pair of dull wire cutters to pinch the pin and not cut it and pry it sideways against the aluminum like pulling a nail out with a hammer claw. On smaller ones you have to hold the Aluminum with pliers in one hand and the wire cutters in the other. Then it's clean aluminum and not dirty because sometimes the pins are magnetic. I use the dull wire cutters a lot because pliers slip and needle nose pliers pinch you and give you a blood blister! That's when I curse!

I know this is a really old video and stripping the boards is definitely the way to go rather than selling. But the method used is poor at best i do lots of boards. The best easiest and fastest way is first clamp boards in a vise. Then grip the parts with your pliers and gently pull them as you heat them with the heat gun. With a good hot heat gun you can completely strip a circuit board in just a couple minutes or less. I can clean a whole big box of boards in less than an hour removing everything. One other thing selling transformers for $0.16 a pound is giving copper away. It takes a little time but for $2.00 a pound i can strip the copper out of them and sell the irony parts separately.

at around 4:30... this is painful to watch, you need to use a desoldering wick, remove as much solder as you can, and then you should be able to easily slide the IC out without ruining all the pins.

Mike the Scrapper I figured that out after, originally thought this video was about hauling them off to reuse them. I don't know if there would be a faster way though, putting the PCB upside down in an oven, and using a bit of mechanical vibration to let all the parts fall out, maybe you have tried something like this already and found it impractical though.

by removong the i.c. chips.. you are lowering the value of the board.. therefor bringing down the price of low grade boards for those of us that do not sit around and waste time collecting crumbs.
