Here I scrap a microwave magnetron.
I also want to dispell the myth that they all contain beryllium. they don't!
for the last 50 years, beryllium oxide has been replaced by aluminu oxide.
Beryllium oxide ceramic is used in SOME very high power magnetrons used in radar transmitters and similar equipment. No longer in microwaves.

Nice demonstration brother! As an added level of protection, I wrap painters tape around that stuff. My research shows that it’s chromium oxide and aluminum oxide. No way manufacturers would use something as expensive as beryllium in household microwaves. Thank you for the shoutout brother. Oh, Btw, I like the new hair do, about to do the same myself.

😢I scrap anything with a power cord. But the better money is in e-waste. Call computer repair shops around you and let them know you recycle them. I have 4 stores that give me the old junk stuff. I have probably 5 years worth of material and as all scrappers know there is never to much. Making another pickup tomorrow.

The effects of beryllium toxicity are very, very bad. Another source of exposure to beryllium is the springs made of beryllium bronze used in relays and some electronics. This stuff is never marked. Be especially careful if you are melting any scrap material or using anything you don't know is pure as the fumes are very toxic. The 'ceramic insulator' on the magnetrons used to be made of beryllium oxide because it is such a good conductor of heat and yet is a good electrical insulator. You will see beryllium oxide used in many high powered radio tubes because of these desirable properties. Don't assume that beryllium oxide isn't being used as certain foreign manufacturers will lie about everything.
@ScrappingScotland
@ScrappingScotland 5 ай бұрын
There is no beryllium oxide in modern microwaves. For one it's too expensive and secondly it was replaced many years ago with aluminu oxide. I'm not saying beryllium isn't used in other items but not in microwaves for decades. High powered magnetrons in things like radio transmitters are a different story but I purely talking about microwaves here. Lots of great information in your comment though and I appreciate you engaging with the video. I don't melt any metal so no issue there for me. Thanks again for your insight

When you cut out the two copper spools, cut one end on each spool ,then use your cutters and strech out the copper spools….the ferrous piece will just fall out…make the other end cuts ….time saved…..I also get the brass ends out of the plastic housing by using my side cutters and leaver against the plastic and the both come out fairly easy….keep up the great work

If the newer ones dont contain beryllium surely its ok to just smash them up? Probably just ceramic.
@ScrappingScotland
@ScrappingScotland 5 ай бұрын
Yes but people are still sceptical so I show the cautious approach whilst reaffirming that there is no beryllium. I also wouldn't want people to assume that no magnetrons contain it as magnetrons in other things like high powered transmitters can still contain it. Just not in microwaves anymore.

i was wondering if the magnetron. contains beryllium copper because the copper is so stiff and hard. most switches and buzz bar contain beryllium. it makes the copper hard like the strength of say brass. you can tell when cutting with snippers its hard to cut unlike soft copper wire.
@ScrappingScotland
@ScrappingScotland 5 ай бұрын
This is not hard copper and it doesn't contain beryllium oxide. Modern microwaves use alumina oxide.

Hi. What do you do with the radioactive thorium-tungsten filament? Do you extract it or keep it whole?
@ScrappingScotland
@ScrappingScotland 5 ай бұрын
I dispose of it at my local recycling centre as hazardous waste. Most yards won't take them even though the hazard risk is very low. When taking a magnetron apart. It can be dangerous if you are grinding the filament down and inhale it, but when you deal with these types of electronics, it's always important to know what you are scrapping and do some research.
