Scrapping small transformers for the copper. Is it worth it?

Hello scrappers and planet lovers. This video I answer a viewers question to see if it is worth the time and effort to separate the copper from small transformers. I do an experiment weighing the untouched transformers and also the copper to see how much more money you can get from the #2 copper inside.

Oh yay, this is my kind of video, I love getting the small copper goodies and I remove them from the boards but only process the easy ones and as you say, take in the others as motors/transformers.

One think that has been seriously under rated in 2021/2022 is the graphite that holds most of these little transformers together, sometimes its plastic and thats not useful at all, but I have been studying alternatives to just throwing it away, and found if its turned in to chips/dust it can be sold for a small price, (foundry at home scacrafical crucible) metal refining

I like the easy ones. Also, I get a lot of those ferrite donuts wrapped in copper. Easy to crack with a hammer and pull off the wires. Most solenoids are easy to crack the plastic and pull off copper too. Have to bend open the metal bracket first. Free copper!

The wire you get from transformers and windings of motors is generically called "magnet wire". It has a thin laquer coating so the windings don't short. It may look like bare copper, and you may be able to pass it off as bare, but it isnt. I think the color indicates a temperature rating.
@TinManScrapper

Also not bare bright because of thickness. Any wire thinner than 16 gauge is #2

Great video. I like how you mentioned that all of this copper wire inside will be considered #2, and not #1. If the transformers have metal frames surrounding to the coil of copper, it's not worth it for me. Too much work. If I can smash them open relatively easily, then I do it. Most of the time I just take them apart for fun and upgrade the price at the same time.😁

good video, just starting out and i've got about 15 lbs of #2 copper, and the steel i get is about the only thing i'm making money off of, the silver and gold goes into a small container, some of it probably neither, but just to be safe anything that looks like it goes in there, really haven't figured out what kinds of aluminum i've got, so same thing, will figure out later. the brass is starting to add up too. haven't got the big score yet, like construction sites, mostly appliances and electronics.

You make absolutely amazing videos that usually answer all my questions about a topic. Currently I am looking for a guide on the various types of capacitors, seeing as there are several categories such as MLCC's, tantalum, burnt copper, and others. I am not sure if you scrap these, as these are more PCB oriented, but it would be novel as I don't think anyone really made a comprehensive video on just capacitor scrapping/sorting. Cheers!!!

Thanks Thomas for that huge compliment. I do take off mlccs and copper prongs off of circuit boards but don’t process. Let me see what I can do, since I have been meaning to do another video on circuit boards and grading them. Stay well.

The more orange color 1 at 2:50 in the video is copper coated aluminum wire which they will only accept as aluminum as there is little copper
@TinManScrapper
@TinManScrapper 8 ай бұрын
If you scratch it and it reveals the aluminum underneath coating yes it is aluminum. However, all of that wire I have scratched and it reveals the copper color, which makes it #2 copper
@kennethyoung6014

Unfortunately most small transformers are copper coated aluminum wire not copper wire which they will only accept as aluminum wire(usually a more orange color to the coated wire like the 1 he shows at 2.55 minutesin is coated aluminum)can check by scratching the wire a little hope this helps someone

Do you have to open the motors and transformers to prove if it’s copper for copper motor price? Example would be a sealed coil

Thanx for your take on these. I like to take almost all of them apart too! Even the automotive fan motors. I currently have (4) 55 gallon drums full of cleaned copper. I also use a wire stripping machine for any wire approx 18 Gauge, or 1mm thick. What do I do with it??? I like to melt it when time. I also melt my dirty aluminum, lead, and am thinking about zinc too, as I've heard there may be a market for it too. I'll check out more of your vids when time.

What is “clean copper”? The wire from transformers, motors, etc. has an enamel coating for insulation. How do you remove the insulation before you melt the copper wire? Thanks!

I have a question for you on aluminum heat sinks they got the copper pipes on the outside and going through do you separate them or leave them together if you separate them how thank you
@evoges5805
@evoges5805 2 жыл бұрын
It is worth separating. Dirty Alu is worth almost nothing compared to class2 Alu and class2 Copper. Alu heatsinks are also extrusion alu, which is worth the most if properly cleaned.
