"why do you want to know my name?" "because I want to know who I'm looking at" that is EXCELLENT writing. we've gone from 0 - 100 over the course of a SINGLE phrase. easily one of the most iconic lines of the entire film.

And if you want to know something interesting, at the time, and honestly even today, many audiences didn’t expect Casey to die so early or even at all. You see, in 1996 Drew Barrymore was a high-profile actress and it was so rare for high-profile actors and actresses to be killed off in many horror movies let alone the beginning! In fact, Barrymore was the original casting choice for Sidney but she willingly turned it down and chose to play Casey in order to break the “cliche” of more famous actors and actresses not dying in horror movies :)

What’s great about this scene is that the conversation has a natural progression that really hasn’t been executed the same way since. At first the killer’s charm puts the victim into a false sense of security. He almost seduces her over the phone. Then when he eventually gets menacing it comes out of seemingly nowhere and is really shocking. I really prefer this cat and mouse game the killer plays as opposed to subsequent movies where he just goes right into “what’s your favorite scary movie” territory.

Billy was on the phone, Stu killed Steve and broke in, then ran around to unlock the front door. We see this when Casey's parents arrived and it is ajar despite Casy having locked it moments before. After Casey hid outside, Billy came in and searched around upstairs while we saw Stu on the main level. It was Stu who popped up and punched through the window to grab Casey, she then knocks him out with the phone. Billy hears the commotion upstairs and runs back outside and finishes her off. We know this is him because he chokes her out and later does the same thing to Sidney unmasked in the final act. There's a whole video on here explaining how it was done. Basically, there's no way the killer could have been making the calls and running around/killing Steve at the same time. "Which door am I at?" was a trick question, because Stu was at the patio door and Billy at the front.

07:52 after this maniacal laugh, right after doing something so terrible, I finally got convinced the killer wasn't joking, because up until that moment his humorous remarks made me think it all could really have been a joke. This Ghostface is pure evil, much more than any of the others. He really enjoys the killing, he's not just seeking revenge like the others. And he enjoys all the process, from the psychological torture (like hanging his victim's body like an artistic painting for her parents to see) to the actual stabbing. That's why this first film will never be surpassed.

What was very smart about Scream was that Drew Barrymore was in all the promotion for the film, which suggested she'd play a significant role. When she dies early on, the viewer is left thinking "If they killed off Drew Barrymore, then everyone's at risk."

A lot of fans don't give her character enough credit. For starters she fought against 2 gf killers, not 1 like all the other openings. Second they expected her to run to the front door but she went to the kitchen. Third yes she stopped outside to look at her dead bf but she's playing someone thats supposed to be human so just like the killers she's going to make mistakes. Really the most believable character.

Billy and Stu were sick as hell for gutting her even further before or after stringing her up, the camera moves too fast in on her to really see but if you look up the dummy they used on the set of this scene, she literally did not have a stomach.

The more gore you see the less scary it is. Also when they rely more on gore you know the movie stinks. The whole point of these movies is a whodunit and not some Saw movie.

At 6:02, the subtle way the score starts teasing Michael Myers' theme from Halloween, was a great touch for a horror movie to call back to another horror movie and help the audience along the way, as if we're thinking right along with Drew Barrymore's character under pressure. This is all-around an excellent opening to a scary movie.
