In our fourth video on Doomed Romance in movies, we take a look at Bob and Charlotte's relationship. Our past videos examined couples that broke up because of internal reasons but this one is because of external ones. Bob and Charlotte's romance is only meant to be a beautiful but momentary one.

Sometimes an emotional affair is more intimate than a physical one. The two characters in this wonderful film share a need that goes beyond a sexual need. That's why this film is so affecting. Utterly moving and a modern masterpiece.

after leaving tokyo, scarlette johansons character was in an accident that left her brain dead and in a coma. her photographer husband had made some contacts and was offered an experimental treatment for her. they would hook her up to a supercomputer to download her her personality and being into an ai program. thats a few years before her. took that long to work the bugs out. one of the people she was cheating on joaquin with was bill murray's character from lost in translation.

I always thought part of the point of this movie was to show that being understood is something only happens in fleeting moments. Sometimes when traveling alone, we're allowed to be somebody else with the people we meet, and sometimes we're allowed to be who we truly are, and say things we'd never say in our 'real' lives. Under those conditions of absolute honesty, then intimacy can be built in a very short time.
@LLyrification
@LLyrification 4 жыл бұрын
i disagree... Your truth changes depending on perspective; meaning that what the other person thinks as valuble and true is different to yours. You are not just losing some meaning on the language barrier but also on the actual meaning of the words and actions themselves, for you value different things as an individual compared to others. That is why people with the same interest and hobbies often times become more intimate. Sadly due to the level of difference in their commitment to their values and worldview it could potentially cause them to fall apart. Or optimistically grow closer to each other.

being understood is something that only happens in fleeting moments - watched this movie tens of times, and as someone quite connected to the concept of being understood, I never thought of it from that pow, I will be spending more time on the idea. Such a movie this is, it is so rich that there is always something new to grasp or seize, every single time. One special piece of art.

I used to hate all the movies with doomed romance. I didn't get why people would like to watch a movie that spent the majority of time bringing people together and then right in the end they would not be together. However, after dealing with a divorce, I can totally understand the point. I think I will reawatch all of those, and see how I can connect to them now.

It's such a weird feeling to pinpoint.. I have a friend who has never really been "just a friend" to me. swantonist I’ve shared this with someone once... I wish it wasn’t a far off distant memory now, one that comes back to me all too often, paining me, the pings of what I should have tried harder to keep, what I should have tried to evolve, what I failed to say out loud... the painful reminder of the brevity of things in life, the short term we share connections... my ultimate failure to seize something - something wholly unique and something I will never get another chance to... or maybe something that still will occur, it’s been a while since I last talked to them though, and it doesn’t seem like they are willing to anymore. In the end though, what I really truly learned from this experience is that: it doesn’t matter, it’s not the end of the world, and it’s not important what’s going to happen, only that it did. There are plenty more beautiful wonderful things and people to experience, and they will come along in time, I have no doubt, so for now I must enjoy this time in my life, this time where I feel desolate and alone, because I also feel free and Unbinded to anyone or anything, I belong solely to myself... and that is a thing which is just as fleeting and valuable.

this movie still haunts me. I remember seeing this so many years ago. It breaks your heart without even trying. No heavy drama, no overly acted scenes. it's the small things in this movie that are so powerful. We know these guys aren't going to end up together but somehow that is not important. Like this analysis says its the temporary aspect of their time together. These are the kind of characters that exist in real life. I guarantee this situation has happened between two people many times. I think it ultimately reminds me of the the temporality of all things. This kind of person if you ever met you would never forget about... you would think about finding them again but probably ultimately wouldn't try to.... when Scarlett's character says that line "Let's never come back here again b/c it won't be as fun" I think she is literally speaking about life itself in that to live once is what makes life vital and exciting...not to "do it over again someday" This movie is a low key masterpiece.

What I found interesting is how they chose Japan as the setting. Just like the cherry blossoms, one of the defining features of Japan, the relationship between the two leads are ephemeral and beautiful, with the transient nature of the relationship only serving to highlight its beauty, just like how cherry blossoms also flower and die in a short season. I think that another way of reading the movie is that everything in life is seasonal, as is the characters' indecision and stuckness in life (winter) but this then gives way to rejuvenation and growth (spring) upon meeting each other. Each season cannot last forever, but in the short window of their blooming time, they create something beautiful and worthy in their relationship.

This movie always reaches straight into my soul and pulls out that exact string of nostalgia that hits the deepest. The phone call with her friend is one of the saddest scenes in the film. Most of us have been there. Wanting to reach out for help but constantly being ignored and glossed over. To the point where you have no choice but to break down. That being said, I've always thought LiT and HER were great companion pieces. I also found the way their different kinds of frustration and loneliness were portrayed interesting. To me it felt like he was always surrounded by too many people, it was too loud, too hysterical, too much. His loneliness came from being among too many people that he didn't connect with at all (see all the commercial scenes). With her it felt the other way around. She was lonely because there was no one there. Her husband went off to work or turned his attention away from her, the person on the phone didn't care. The scenes with the biggest contrast were the pool scenes to me. When he was in there, they had the aqua sports stuff, it was loud and busy. When she was in there, it was night and quiet and she just dove into the silence. They both come from completely different situations, stages in life and from different kinds of loneliness but the feeling and understanding is mutual. Beautiful movie, thanks for your analysis and the insight on the Her parallels, that's amazing!

Then I met this girl and we instantly became friends. Before long she was staying in my cabin with me. We would spend literally every moment together. We worked together and we slept together and did it all again day after day for what seemed like forever. But it wasn't forever. Pretty soon it was time for her to go back home. And I knew that day was coming but I wasn't ready for it at all when it finally came. Even though the end was extremely hard I don't regret any of it. I know the feeling. I’ve been through such similar moments. They’re so bittersweet. Idk why people say there is a lot of sexual tension… in the moments, you’re not in that mood at all. You just want to lay forever & be okay together. Not alone but the warmth of connection & cuddles and such. That scene where they’re in bed, & he comforts her & himself by feeling her foot. That feels a billion times more intimate & full of feeling than a sexual encounter.

This movie always hits home with me because I met a female friend whilst traveling in Europe who became a very special friend to me and shared a very strong bond with. Similar circumstances.. we both were in relationships… both of us were American in a foreign land, didn’t really speak the language well.. though we connected so strongly on an emotional plane . It was just that calm peaceful feeling that even without words exchanged, felt like we were so comfortable and comforted by each others company. It’s been 20+ years since our adventures together in Europe.. but I still think about her to this day. Not even a feeling of longing to be with her.. or to see her again, though it would be nice. But more of a feeling of gratitude that I met and was able to spend time with someone who taught me a lot about myself and my perspective on things in life. I think because of the things I learned from her.. I came out a better person and someone who is more at peace with himself and the way I view the world and treat others.

Happened to me a few years ago, still miss the girl deeply. we met in college, i never felt such a deep, visceral, primal connection with someone, it really felt like we knew each other for a long time and I've never felt that comfortable around someone ( at least it felt like that to me, truth is i will never know her side of the story). She had a boyfriend so by respect i never tried anything while ignoring sign of possible flirtation on her side. And she did seem happy with him. For reasons i will always regret not telling her.

Being in my early fifties now and viewing the film from a new perspective. Something has to be said about, being at an age where the experience of a spontaneous falling-in-love encounter and connection, will probably never happen again. The movie hits home more now than when I first saw it at age 31. Feeling the intense grief of an encounter that you've left in the past never to be repeated. Lost to time and circumstance.

The dubbed Spanish Latin version of the movie, when Bob whispers clearly you can hear: "quiero que sepas que jamás voy a olvidarme de todo esto, ¿de acuerdo?... Nunca te olvidare"... That translates to: "I want you to know that I will never forget all of this, ok?... I will never forget you". Obviously this was incorrect based on the digitally processed original audio that says: "I have to be leaving... But, I won't let that come between us, ok?" That's Bill Murray saying it, not Bob, because that line was never on the script, so in my opinion the spanish version line sounds more realistic according to the character. I just can't imagine Bob in the future chasing Charlotte and cheating his wife. To me this was more like a 'never see you again goodbye' than a 'see you in the future goodbye'. A really accepted doomed romance from Bob.

I understand the meaning of both versions as exactly the same message. Bob has no way of contacting her once they say goodbye, so to me, saying "I will never forget you" and "I won't let that come between us", mean the same thing, ie, she's always going to be in his heart, no matter what, and nothing, nobody, and no physical distance can take that away from them.

Don't deconstruct this moment, don't probe, don't explore... just savor the mystery and relish how exquisitely transcendent this moment is. It is one of the greatest emotional climaxes in cinema history. Out of an astonishing depth of respect & compassion for the characters and their sad, rich relationship, Sofia actually gives them their PRIVACY for these their final words together. When I first saw this I was astonished, literally speechless, not only at the level of respect & compassion (for FICTIONAL characters!) but also how Sofia understands that NOT knowing what Bob whispered makes the film a hundred times richer than dialogue could convey, for - as Einstein said - "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious". Brilliantly prepped, and brilliantly conveyed, a transcendence like this is rarely achieved in ANY medium... and thus is truly Art.

In some way this movie captures the romantic side of traveling. Being on the road, quite often you have the same kind of conversation with the same kind of character all over again but every now and then you meet someone that just gets you. That doesn't mean your're super special or anything like that, it's just about a certain chemistry that can't be faked. It doesn't have to be romantic by the way, could be completely platonic. It's great to see this dynamic portrayed so authentically.

I didn't realise that for Spike Jonze's film "Her" and for Sophia Coppola's film "Lost in Translation", the main actress in both films is Scarlett Johanson. If Jonze and Coppola both got inspiration from their failed relationship for these films, it is a nice touch to know that ScarJo is portraying it both. As if she too is part of it.

So many romance films fall flat because they focus on what the couple wants. It's centered around passionate gestures and incindiary, impulse-driven spurs of the moment. A radio above the head, a passionate kiss in the rain, and storming into a wedding at the last moment to stop the bride-to-be from marrying the wrong man. But Lost in Translation doesn't focus on what each other wants: it focuses on what each other *needs.* And what our two characters need, above all else, is companionship. It's absolutely a love story, and you might even be able to walk away with the impression that it's a "romance," but I think the relationship of our two characters defies such a simple categorization. They're not "in love" with one another so much for what they can provide sexually, or as a means of pleasure to one another; rather, their love is thoroughly grounded in finding the beauty of another's soul. It's the warmth of finding a kindred spirit in a cold sea of strangers. Bob and Charlotte are lighthouses for one another. Forever one of my favorite films and an exemplary depiction of love in its most serene, pure, and spiritual form.

This movie is in my top movies of all time (probably no. 1) and everything I thought about it is what you convey in this video. I'm glad someone else understands the movie the way I do. Kudos! It also resonates with me hugely as this is similar to how my wife and I met. We knew of each other prior but met randomly during Sonisphere festival in the UK. We didn't know either of us were going and the very first day, early afternoon we bumped into each other at the bar (a festival with roughly 100,000 people and dozens of bars). We spent the whole festival together and just hit it off; we had the absolute best time but couldn't take it further as we were both in unhappy relationships and at different times in our lives. 4 years later we reconnected on Tinder. I had not long broken up with the relationship I was in during the festival and i came across my wife about 2 minutes into my first session on the app, swiped right and we went on our first date a few days later. We are now happily married with 2 children. That festival was my Lost in Translation...

Beautiful insights and interpretation. So true how 'doomed' romances can be necessary pieces of the puzzle in our emotional / psychological lives. Not everything has to consolidate into a formal relationship or end in 'together forever' to have been deeply transformational and a vital part of our emotional experiences. It has taken me a long time to recognize how important it is to give yourself to the moment and the intimacy of the connection, even if you know it cannot be sustained. There are many inner processes and emotions that can be mobilized and unlocked in allowing such a vulnerability. And it is also a way to honor life in the present moment, knowing such moments can never come back, regardless of the outcome.

From 0:00-0:48 is probably the most crucial part about or as to why meeting people who you've never seen or met before is sooooooo refreshing that you let your guard down a tad bit. Malcolm Gladwell touched on this in Talking With/To Strangers. But when you meet a woman that you seemingly vibe with & contrary to popular belief you can tell she vibes with you. There is that in which Screened points out in the first minute of this video. You not only know it,you feel it & hate that the moment will end. It happens probably at least once every 5 to 10 years if you're single if you're married (*I couldn't tell ya) But you sense that you could be with that person as in possible kindred spirits
