Step inside the pitch meeting that led to Disney’s Mulan remake!
Subscribe for more Pitch Meetings: goo.gl/ho3Hg6
Disney has had a lot of financial success in recent years by remaking their popular animated movies into live-action versions (or super realistic animated versions.) With billions of dollars made so far, it’s only natural that they’ve decided to keep moving through their catalog. And so… live-action Mulan is here!
The remake lots of questions. Like why has all the fun been removed from this thing? Why is Mushu gone, only to be replaced with a whole bunch of other magical stuff? Why is this a superhero movie now? Why was Mulan born with superhuman abilities? What’s up with the witch character telling her where to go all the time? Why aren’t any of her army friends fun anymore? Did she just kick an arrow into that dude’s chest?!?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Disney’s live-action Mulan! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvnience.

@@mrnobody6609 Afaik the CCP also didn't like it. Not only did Disney appropriate and distort a treasured Chinese legend, the fact that Mulan is now just born as the chosen one also breaks with the egalitarian idea that every person is born equally valuable, which is a central pillar of communist ideology. Superior hero bloodlines don't really sit well there. So yeah, they did piss off everyone.

Mulan has got to be my favorite Disney movie. Because it was heavily based on the original folk lore of Milan but also had its own creativity like adding Mushu and the Cricket, and giving all these characters pleasant personalities that made it more enjoyable to watch. Milan didn’t have powers, she wasn’t a Mary Sue. She was a normal girl who only wanted to help her father because if he had gone, he could be killed. And she knew she was going to be killed if she got caught yet she did it anyways which is what shows her incredible mindset. And as she grew as a character, so did the other characters. They all messed up, had a hard time with training, and struggled to get through with things but over time they ALL became physically strong, smarter, and better fit for the reason they were all there, to fight in a war. It wasn’t Milan holding up the whole team. And the love story was so subtle yet precious I adored it. It was a good movie that showed healthy feminism and girl power without just shoving it down your throat. And then they remade it and now the children of the future will likely only watch the remake because ooo magic.

@Bernie's Mittens What you just described has nothing to do with feminism. A strong PERSON is someone who fights through setbacks and earns their victory. Its not "feminist storytelling" just because the protagonist is female. No part of the story is about fighting for gender equality and none of the movies were meant as a "feminist" stories. Mulan is a role model for her bravery, love and unselfishness, but she is not a feminist icon.

Even in Hua Mulan where she WAS better than most of the other characters... It was because she trained her entire life under the tutelage of one of the greatest masters. Her reason for joining the army was as much to save her father, who would have been killed due to his asthma, as it was because she knew she was the best for the job. Also her falling inlove with the general was a like more sweet because she liked him because he was caring and compassionate (For example, he... as the general... You have your normal-looking outfits and armors, sure, but when the girls are given bunny suits SO ARE THE MEN. This, my fellow weebs, IS TRUE GENDER EQUALITY. I played WOW for some time too, but only a demo and didn't really make note of the outfits. Not that I even particularly care, mind you - hell, when I can play a woman, I want that eyecandy to be a sexy badass too that I can simultaneously insert myself into and drool over (in case you haven't notice, I have a bit of gay~). It's because the true goal of mainstream pop "feminism" these days isn't to empower girls to rise up and be equal to men... it's to create an imaginary narrative where they're automatically stronger just by existing. And Disney sees dollar signs by cashing in on this trend, instead of leaning into what made their girl characters _already_ strong and empowering role models in the first place.

tbh, that was a minor plot hole in the original animated movie. Mulan's dad would've been sent home because of his age, meaning Mulan shouldn't need to do a thing (and she could've gone home too when she was deemed "unsuited for war", but I guess her own honor is more important for her dad's and her own's safety) (realistically in ancient China, men don't get sent home just because they're not as tough since the army needs every man they could find...so Mulan has good reasons to save her father)

People love animated Mulan because she started from an ordinary woman and do her best to prove herself that she's a worthy warrior just like any other, not someone with special power, not only she represent strong woman, but people can relate to her. Nowadays people think a way to make a woman strong is by making that women gloating over her womanhood in a way.
