It’s been 30 years since the last time we saw Mario on the big screen, and that… did not go so well. Finally, the multiple decades have seemingly allowed the Nintendo Corporation to cool off and give Mario and Luigi another shot at cashing in in Hollywood.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie definitely raises some questions. Like why was there a warp pipe under the streets of Brooklyn? Why did Princess Peach bring up her mysterious past and then not explain any further? What are these power-up boxes and how did they get there? Why didn’t Toad have to do that obstacle course, and why did Mario have to spend so much time doing it only to fail?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to The Super Mario Bros. Movie!

I took home that everything will turn out alright as long as brothers stick together. About that video game mechanics thing though: does anyone remember Independence Day 2 with the multi-stage boss fight were they had to chew through the alien queen's HP bar? @@hoffmanthemilkman4217 manhole is a term to reference the entrance to the utilities under a street, but you could misinterpret it as a man-hole which would be an orifice on a male human. And in order for orifices to leak in the human body, they tend to need to be loose - the opposite of tight. So that contradiction paired with the gross factor of imagining leaky man-holes and the producers interest in them is shocking and thus funny.

@@xitaris5981 I had to laugh at the 'manhole' reference. 'Manholes', either the (usually) round metal plates seen in roads, or a rectangular fibreboard inset into a household ceiling to allow access into the roof cavity, are now more commonly referred to as a 'service access point', not because 'manhole' could be confused as meaning 'anus', but to make it gender neutral.

Yup, I thought that was pretty obvious. And honestly all the jokes about “you’re not going to explain that?” to me aren’t valid either. It’s a kids movie and I was totally okay just suspending my belief to have fun instead of 3 hours of them trying to somehow explain why turtles talk, mushrooms make you big, pipes warp, etc. I actually laughed when Mario said “so these bricks are just floating, ok”.

What was the point of the obstacle course though? It just felt like exposition without character. Yeah, Peach is obviously the Live-Action Mulan of the movie. That's all I learned. 2:16 I feel a lot of people miss something here. I noticed this on a 2nd watch of the movie, Peach told the council of Toads that she was gonna leave for the Kong Kingdom THE NEXT MORNING. She wasn’t planning on leaving right then and there. When she met Mario (a potentially concerned citizen) and heard that his brother was captured by Bowser, Mario himself insisted on coming with. She wanted to test Mario’s ability and see if he was capable enough to actually face the potential dangers. You have to remember that she admires bravery and determination. She saw his determination to want to save his brother himself and respected it. By the next morning, even though Mario (ultimately) didn’t pass the course, she let him tag along cause she liked his tenacity. I’m sure if he didn’t show any progress at all by the morning, she wouldn’t have let him come. Ultimately, she didn’t “waste time” training Mario, because as she said, she wasn’t planning on leaving till the morning anyway. She probably would’ve slept or something within that time until she left at daylight. You may believe she actually should’ve left right away, but that wasn’t her plan, so it’s not a flaw within the script. Whether or not you want to count her not leaving right away as a critique, her taking time for Mario was not. That part is covered. That one line of dialogue is just very easy to miss.

If Mario hadn't appeared would she have just had a nice luxurious dinner and gone to bed before walking all the way to her destination when time is of the essence to save the entire kingdom? Story wise it doesn't make sense.
@NivMizzet89

@@gymnastgirlflips I think most of that's implied to be happening off-screen. The wait until next morning is (presumably) to make time for any necessary preparations and arrangements for such a journey. With or without Mario, at the very least some time is needed to decide how the kingdom is going to be run in the meantime (and what happens if the journey does run into complications). Leaving the next morning makes a lot more sense than running off at once.

One thing I really loved about the characterisation of Mario and Luigi was the brotherly love they had for each other. Although Luigi does get unfairly limited screen time in the movie, and I know a lot of people like to make fun of or make parodies about Mario being a bigshot and hogging the spotlight while Luigi always gets bullied, I was really touched by the brotherly bond the two had in this film, and it really warmed my heart to see how much the two cared about each other, and seeing how close Mario was to break down in tears after reuniting with his brother was quite wholesome. Not to mention Mario always looking out for his little bro and Luigi supporting his brother's dream and overcoming his fear in the final act. Reminded me of my connection with my brother

There’s so much musical material from this franchise PG: That’s true, but if it’s one thing kids like in a kids movie, it’s licensed songs from the 80s SG: From the 80s? SG: I don’t think kids were alive during those songs PG: Yeah, but we’re still gonna go with it. SG: You sure that people will like that and not say they feel out of place? I found the gags quite entertaining, but you are right. It’s kinda sad that our expectations are low enough to where a movie with video game references is all it takes to be a hit. Overall, the movie was good, but nothing too spectacular. (Except by Illumination standards, this movie was a miracle. Probably because the creator of Mario himself was on the team) Also, the star lasted WAY longer than it should’ve. I think it would’ve been cool if it ran out right before they killed bowser and maybe they used the Golden Gate Bridge to defeat Bowser similar to how you do in the games.
