Bowie could have composed it earlier. It is said that Stanley Kubrick asked him to write a song in order to use it in the beginning of his new film. Kubrick finally decided to take the Waltz Blue Danube of Strauss, but the intro scene was filmed and edited originally with the music of David Bowie. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6dygMJi2Nm4mmg.html

You got it. It's an avant-garde masterpiece. First released in 1969 it was inspired by Kubrick's Space Odyssey and the Apollo missions. I was still in primary school back then but that song resonated in my head since I first heard it. Also check out Bowie's Life on Mars.

This song came about during the space race. David saw the film 2001: A Space Odyssey while high and this song came out of it. It was released in a shortened version 10 days before the Apollo 11 moon landing. Major Tom is a fictional character that David also wrote into songs like Ashes to Ashes and Hallo Spaceboy, and the music video for Blackstar.

What gives this song an otherworldly feel is the mellotron, a keyboard instrument that sounded like a string section, albeit with a sour tone. Rick Wakeman played the mellotron here. He would famously go on the be the keyboardist for the rock group Yes.

Wakeman was doing sessions when he was still at school and left music college because he was getting so much work. I know EXACTLY where I was when I first heard this that year. I was a Working Class lad from South East London who, luckily, went to a Grammar School and became friends with a Middle-Class Guy and we were all playing Board games on the floor in his parent's house in Clapham S W London and this came on :) FUN FACT: Only (then ) Session Musician: Rick Wakeman knew how to use and control THe "Mellotron" so he got all the Session work at the time.
