No they did not sample the money sounds. Samplers weren’t invented back then! They recorded coins being thrown into a metal bowl.

It's also the sound of cash registers opening and closing, but I'm not sure if young people these days have ever seen cash registers like that. Just as many have never heard the kind of clock sounds at the beginning of "Time."

The tape splice was so long they had to loop it around a mic stand across the room, then back to the tape player. Alan Parson produced it.

Old time mechanical cash registers used to make a “Cha-Ching” when the drawer popped open before electronics. This is way before sampling, so they probably recorded it and spliced the tape together in the mixing process.

As the "hit single" (a very rare thing for a Pink Floyd album), Money is probably the most played (over the years) and most under-rated track these days. Other tracks seem to get more hype lately (e.g. Comfortably Numb, etc.) IMHO, it's an absolute masterpiece, and still thrills and chills every time I hear it. Sweetie....You're a joy to watch. Sadly, GENUINE reactions are few and far between here. It's obvious you feel it and you "get it". First listen reactions are great, but great tracks always seem to get better with age.

Creativity and originality are not the issues that "boomers" and other people with musical knowledge and taste have with music-by-Mac, its the musicianship. If you have that nobody gives a scrap how you made it, but if you can get your Mac to play the sax or guitar like that and I will take my hat off to you before I eat it.

The samples of the coins at the beginning was done by manually splicing the tape with a razor blade, and reassembling it to make it match the beat (back in the late 80s, I worked as a recording engineer; I did this. But the way they did it is VERY difficult!) The main part of the song is in 7/8 time. Most songs you count 1, 2, 3, 4. This song you count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (although the middle with the guitar solos is in 4). Very few rock songs do this.

This song has it all. A little bit of funk, a little bit of soul, and a SEARING, SCREAMING KICK-ASS guitar solo by David Gilmour. Great, from the opening cash register/loose change sound effects to the playful interaction between Gilmour and his guitar at the end.

Starts out in 7/4 time, a pretty weird time signature for a pop song, then switches to 4/4 for the solo, reportedly because Gilmour was unable to get a good solo going in that strange time signature.

I AM ready to rock n' roll! Damn-I should have answered you 7 months ago! Cool reaction to this great song, and you're right-that bass carries such a great groove. I find I prefer rock music when it does groove like that, because that's what makes you dance. You had an articulate commentary on money as a social construct, which I found impressive, as my talking is usually riddled with "ums" and "uhs"!

Well, it's as simple as this: The squirrel has to get up everyday and spend it's entire day hunting for food whilst avoiding being eaten. You are free to go out and forage to your heart's content, no money need be expended. Or, you could outsource that labour to someone else so you can avoid all the leg work and energy that would be expended. Of course, the person doing the labour is spending time they could be growing/rearing food for themselves, on you. So, of course they need some sort of compensation so they can purchase food for themselves. It would be highly unfair on them if they spent all day out in the field for you, leaving nothing for themselves, without you rewarding them for their work so they can support themselves, no?

What is truly priceless is watching you react to real music. Todays music is about money, me, mine, and how much I got. The difference being that older artists wrote stories about things and events that affected themselves and other people. But the palette of music is so limited now, which is why pro tools actually and auto tune are inhibitors to music.

my opinion: money is probably the most ingenious device humans ever invented. a person doesn't require to own anything because all of the things we want or need can be represented by pieces of paper. money is portable so, i can "have a car in my pocket" or five minutes later i can change my mind and allow the money to represent a house, a boat, or a pair of new shoes. money is...not only portable but it can represent any object i want or need. i can conserve my personal energy by owning nothing and renting everything on the fly. it's a fact, and i've lived this lifestyle for many years. it's quite liberating.
