My favourite episode I've reviewed so far! I can't believe I haven't seen this one, it was absolutely genius and reminded me that 'everything comes down to poo' :)
I take a look at the show from a real doctor perspective breaking down the medicine onscreen, it's accuracy and comparing it to my real life experience as a doctor.
There will be more reviews, including other episodes of Scrubs, House MD. The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident and ER!

Talk to people with synesthesia. There're definitely some medical maladies and neuroses that sound at least more pleasant than the alternative, but it's not always sunshine and rainbows. For instance, one of the most common forms of synesthesia, itself a condition that can manifest as seeing colors where you see words, or the touch of something having a specific smell in your brain, etc... Is Misphonia. Misphonia is a condition that causes irrational emotional reactions in response to sound, as well as other reactions on top of that. For instance, in my case, chewing, lip smacking, excessive white noise, or even just discordant chatter can make me irrationally angry at pretty much anything around me. Velcro tearing, markers on paper, and some other similar noises make the back of my throat itch. It's unpleasant, to say the least.

When I was studying psychology/neurobiology one case study I remember seeing was of a person who was having small seizures in the pleasure processing area's of their brain, they experienced a blissful sensation and felt that 'god was talking to them' and refused treatment because of that, which was really sad because their brain was destroying parts of itself, but it felt good so they refused to treat the problem. I still wonder sometimes how that case turned out long term.

I think you're my favorite doctor to react to scrubs, because while you point out inaccuracies in the show you also make sure to follow up "but here's why it's probably inaccurate, because the show is condensing this particular part of medicine to move the plot along" or something along those lines. You know how to separate it being "wrong" from it needing to keep the show from overwhelming its audience.

Since the show is from JD's perspective I always wondered if this is episode was actually him imagining what the patient was going through which would explain why everyone is dancing around even though her issue is purely auditorial it seems.

@Knowtheledge Thelastdayz some case were from other's perspective.
@joelf1
@joelf1 5 жыл бұрын
@Knowtheledge Thelastdayz Well, it's a bit complicated really. I've studied storytelling in it's various forms (and watched all of Scrubs a good couple of times) and I'd say it is as much from JD's prespective as you could more or less exspect from a show. Since there is no 'text' beside what is said in the scenes (as there would be in a book or a written play) many clues concerning the perspective are missing, so to speak. Movies or shows are almost never from someone's direct perspective since this would logically involve a first person view which was done before (see the movie 'Hardcore Henry') but not often. However the clues that CAN be found mostly point toward the show being from his perspective: We almost exclusively follow him around during the show and while there are a few scenes without him or episodes where we follow Turk, Elliott or even others, these are far and few between and in the latter case are clearly exceptions to the rule. We also hear JD's thoughts and even see his daydreams which in stories is a good indicator of perspective. Lastly the episode titles (except in the ninth season, which is clearly it's own seperate thing) are all in the format 'My ...' which refers to JD as can be seen in many cases. All in all it is absolutely fair to say that Scrubs is told from JD's perspective with room for the usual exceptions to the rule. Storytelling is just not always as clear cut as we would think or like it to be.
@MikaeruDaiTenshi
@MikaeruDaiTenshi 5 жыл бұрын
@@joelf1 You forgot that he also acts as a narrator. We usually hear his inner monologue and see his daydreams. That's why the series is from his perspective, there are exceptions though. And the last season is about the new students, with Lucy as the narrator, as JD's journey at Sacred Heart is over.

The singing only occurs when the patient is present, so it's clearly from her perspective. Also, the actor who plays the patient was on the broadway version of Avenue Q, so perhaps she mentally associates singing with dancing a lot more than the rest of us do.

I suffered a brain injury of my temporal lobe and the optic nerve on the right side of my brain, making the outside of my right eye blind and effecting my reading, memory and concentration. The auditory cortex isn't the part of my temporal lobe that was damaged. This has changed the way my brain remembers and hears things. If I hear things or say them out loud it gets locked into my brain sort of like a photographic memory. My hearing is better than most. I can hear things that most people can't because of how much my hearing has been amplified. I listened to a 44 hour audiobook in about 10 hours and can retain auditory information better when it's faster and my brain has to focus. If it's too slow I zone out and don't retain information as well. It's interesting how the brain works

You are not the first person to suggest that. Great minds think alike. But my attention span is very bad and it takes a certain sort of auditory information to stick. Sounds like traffic and people walking is extremely loud to me but when there's too many different noises in one spot that I have to focus on my brain shuts down and I zone out. The very last scene always gets me....the one where it's night, all the doctors went home and all she hears is the sounds of machines and typical hospital noises and is a bit disappointed and so she takes a moment to think about the joy hearing the songs was and then hums a little. Loved that scene!

Thanks for doing these, i love watching your channel in general but these "scrubs reviews" are my highlight. One thing i would like to point out because ever since i noticed it, it became my favorite part of "my musical" is that everyone only starts singing as long as they're in the same room as her, they talk normally whenever she is not present. it is a small thing and of course "logical" but the fact that the writers paid attention TO these details is what i love so much about scrubs. Cheers and thanks again for the content!

Dr. Hope: In the episode "My Nickname", JD talks about the dynamic between nurses with more experience, and new doctors. I think you should grab a nurse colleague to discuss this, and perhaps other nurse specific issues in the show. Also several episodes deal with Elliot's struggle as a female doctor, so this would be another thing to explore with the input from a female colleague.

In watching the commentary for this episode, the doctor for the show ( The real J.D. ... Yes, I am a Scrubs nerd ) did find some sort of medical condition where the patient thought they heard music or singing. It's been a while, but I am pretty sure I am remembering that right. Scrubs exaggerated it for this episode in am effort to produce a musical. I am really glad I found your show ... Your show is awesome!

Thanks for doing another Scrubs episode. I love how you credited me even though I suggested skipping this one. Guess you proved me wrong. JD "You're the only man who's ever been inside of me!" Turk "Whoa, whoa, I just took out his appendix." Second-favorite joke in the entire series. My absolute favorite is: JD "Yes, exposing yourself to a dead guy might have been a tad unorthodox, and yes, it might be a little hard to live down..." Elliot "I'm waiting for the but." JD "So's everyone else around here."

I honestly want to see him react to the episode of ER where the Helicopter landed and killed one of the doctors. (After he lost his arm cut off by another helicopter.) That is as over the top as it gets. As for the Grey’s Musical episode I saw that before Scrubs and it was enough to make me think “Man, live action shows should NEVER do a musical episode unless it’s That 70’s Show.” This show proved me so insanely wrong.

So a fun fact about this episode: The actress who played the patient is a woman by the name of Stephanie D'Abruzzo who has been both on and off boradway, most notably in the original lineup for Avenue Q (which is particularly appropriate since she played various roles in Sesame Street both before and after the fact). I'm not sure if you're familiar with that particular musical, but do yourself a favor and at least check out the soundtrack here on KZfaq if you can't find a recorded version of the broadway show, trust me.
