10k mile update video: • 10K Mile Update - Nitt...
Since so many tire road noise reviews are extremely subjective, I decided to take some decibel readings, both with the stock H/T tires, and then with the Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Measurements taken at both 45mph and 75mph.

Thanks for your video presentation... Very well done. I also have Ridge Grapplers on my truck and could not be more pleased ! Current mileage is @ 18k & I faithfully rotate them every 3,000-3,500 miles. Quiet as can be... Look great... Ride great... Perform great... etc. Nitto definitely has a winner here ! FYI... As for your road test results, there may be a possible flaw in your head-to-head comparison... Unless your OEM stock tires are also 35", then your cruise control hwy speeds do not actually match for each set of tires. When you upsize your tires, then your speedometer is off & you're actually traveling faster than the speedometer reading indicates... which means you're inducing more potential noise into the test while traveling at higher speeds on the Ridge Grapplers. If you do end up doing that follow-up comparison test in the future, you may want to take that into consideration to keep the testing standards consistent. Thanks again...!

Funny story, I got pulled over about a week after I got 35’s for my jeep. I had no idea what was the reason so when the trooper told me I was speeding I was so confused because I knew I was set at 75. The trooper informed me about bigger tires changing how fast you’re really going and I got off with a warning. Just a little story that you made me think of.

I just got convinced to get the Ridge grapplers over the toyo open county At2 because of more noise in the latter (according to the guy at the shop) and I always loved the nitto pattern better. The highway vibration is something I saw in another video for my Ram about a year ago when i started research. Anyway, thanks for the great video and as subjective a test you could make.

As you mentioned, they are always quiet when new, even Trail Grapplers. Come back and do this again at 20k miles. The Trails are the loudest tire I've ever run. I think I'm going with the Terras, Duratrac, BFG AT or Toyo ATII.
@ScrufsGarage
@ScrufsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
My goal is to do noise level follow up periodically. However, covid has really limited my driving this year. I considered the Duratracs when I was shopping, as I ran them on a previous Jeep many years ago and liked them. I had the Terra Grappler G2's on my F150 before I got my Gladiator. Even after 60k miles they still had life left in them and were always very quiet. But they aren't quite as aggressive as the Ridge Grapplers.
@suburbanhobbyist2752
@suburbanhobbyist2752 3 жыл бұрын
@@ScrufsGarage Cool, that will be interesting to see. Yeah, the Terras don't look as great but at this point I am willing to sacrifice looks for noise reduction on the highway and to have tires that last more than 35,000 miles. But, I am actually leaning towards the BF Goodrich ATs at this point.

I put 30k miles on mine before I sold my jeep. They were as quiet then as the day I bought them. I’ve never had a tire do that before. Also, I don’t know what you know about the duratrac, but we have them on our company vehicles and they are all loud as heck. All of them.

@@lukelambert4595 Wow, that is a good result. I've had two sets. Both of them were run on my F150. The first set I got around 40k out of and they were annoying loud at around 20k and deafening after 35k. The second set I got around 35k out of and they were loud in the same way. Good choices. How much poke do you have for the tires? And did you need to add wheel spacers. I am not sure about the backspacing on those wheels. I am in the market for wheels/ tires and want to have minimal poke.
@ScrufsGarage
@ScrufsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Since I have aftermarket wheels with a different offset, there's no need for wheel spacers. My wheels are a 17x8.5, with a -6mm offset. So they stick out some from the fender, actually a bit more than I would prefer, but it's difficult to find a wheel you like with the perfect offset. A more positive offset like +6mm would pull the wheel in about 1/2". In one of my other videos, from before the lift, you get a few more angles of how my wheels sit relative to the fenders that may give you a reference point. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8-Xd8Z3xqqUiIU.html

Scruf's Garage So far I like them but haven’t had them off-road yet. I’m building this truck to be an “almost daily driver” that will also handle anything I throw at it in the dunes. I've had 33x12.5 20 Ridge grapplers on my '19 F150 for about 2500 miles. I'm not impressed, AT ALL. They are not quiet by any means. They HUMMMM like a MFer. I also cannot get rid of the vibration above 55mph. The vibration gets worse up to about 87 but at 90 it's completely smooth. 3 road force balances by 3 different shops using a hunter elite machine. 2 tires requiring above 30# and 2 tires requiring almost 50# of road force. I don't know if I just got bad tires but I hate these dam things. I've opened a case with Nitto and hoping they replace all 4. The only thing positive I can say about these tires is that they, IMO, have the best looking sidewall.

Hello, does a negative offset make it louder ?
@ScrufsGarage
@ScrufsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
No, the neg offset on the wheels just affects how far in or out the tire sits in the wheel well. I supposed having the tire stick out past the fender might introduce a bit more wind resistance, but I don't think you'd be able to measure a noise increase just from that. The main source of noise is from the tread pattern.

The look of the tires wasn't worth the vibration to me when 80 MPH is normal cruising speed. The same thing happened to me and bounced around tire shops figuring they would get smooth at high speeds but they never did. Your right around the fact a more aggressive tire with vibration at high speeds is a thing. Can't blame the company though or the installer, all-terrain tires aren't engineered for smooth 80-90 travel, though they did seem to balance out (kinda) around 100 MPH. Still, I switched to Goodyear all seasons and have no issues going right to the limiter.

A friend had Nitto Mud Grapplers on his 2500HD and they were crazy loud. You couldn't talk to him on the phone if he was in his truck. They looked awesome, but just way too loud for a vehicle you need to drive on a regular basis, IMO.

@@ScrufsGarage I’m on trail grapplers which is still a mud terrain but a lot less aggressive than a mud grappler, and I have very little noise at highway/interstate speeds. My truck is straight-piped so it’s loud by itself but when I coast down hills or whatever, the tires hardly make a noise. And I have had some tires that would just scream going down the highway that were just some normal all terrains, they weren’t Nittos tho lol.

I've got about 15k miles on them now, so far so good. Wearing very well, slight increase in road noise but nothing crazy. I did a 10k mile update on them here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eK-Vd5Wf3amyj5s.html

The reason for the subjectivity is the ineptitude to properly review in proper detail the situation. And this being the speed each person drives mostly, whether they have the radio On and what volume level, and the air inflation rate. All of these people mostly don't know to isolate once they decide to access the tires and then profess to other people what was happening. They're just doing their thing, and having their emotions about the situation under their personal conditions, then go and give a tire review or comment without even thinking of all proper parameters to have considered in the moment. For this Jeep, not made to be a wind tunnel hero, seems the noise is more what you are dealing with.
