SCTV is arguably the greatest skit comedy show ever created, and that includes Monty Python and early SNL. For my money it's easily the greatest, hands down.

This was the ultimate relief triumvirate in my youth and, obviously, I still return when in need of real good laughs. I feel where you're coming from and you could very well be correct, but each brought such unique and genuine comedy quality to my life I'm hard-pressed to choose up sides. Regardless, ha-ha's remain good medicine!

I came here because today (9/22/22) Jimmy Webb on his Facebook page linked to this video and said he laughs every time he watches it. As you may know, Jimmy Webb wrote MacArthur park. For the songwriter to love a parody of his song, that is the best tribute to the clip I can think of!

The CBC had some extra programming money laying around and just gave it to the SCTV cast to put something, anything on the air to fill time. This is the gold they came up with. So much classic comedy came out of this. All without network producers sticking their noses in the content.
@bufnyfan12 ай бұрын
Actually, SCTV first began on a fledgling new TV network (Global Television) in the early 70s. They got a license on the condition that they produced a certain number of hours of original Canadian programming. They were desperate for something and offered it to Second City which had a comedy group in Toronto (including Candy, Levy, Thomas, etc). At first, they produced just one half hour of programming a week and it was so successful that the CBC got interested and they then went there.
@squamish42442 ай бұрын
@@bufnyfan1 Some networks, here and in the UK, seemed to have cash to burn in the 70s and took chances on outrageous stuff that they would never do now. Don't get me wrong, streaming television is amazing, but the way that networks just went "Ah, what the hell" and threw money and more importantly, programming time at Monty Python, SNL and SCTV, bizarre and utterly ridiculous content, is funny as hell.
@squamish42447 жыл бұрын
A lot of people talk about the 'legendary' early days of SNL, but really, despite some timeless skits, a lot of it has dated pretty badly. SCTV I find still holds up amazingly well for how long ago this was.
@BettinaBalser7 жыл бұрын
SNL sucks. Always has, always will. I have watched this clip 100 times and it still makes me laugh out loud.
@squamish42447 жыл бұрын
@113908207651564492634 I wouldn't say it has always sucked, I just think the humour of SCTV, for whatever reason, has tended to age better. SNL has been pretty funny lately IMO but still wildly uneven.

The talent is much better. Eugene Levy alone puts Bill Murray, Belushi, and Ferrell to shame. Ferrell's celebrity is especially confounding.
@eg44494 жыл бұрын
Murray is a true talent, and he played Joe DiMaggio in an SCTV skit. Belushi was a force of nature. Except for the Chevy Chase the first SNL was very strong. Many started in the Second City troup. It really became a matter of the direction that Lorne Michaels took the show once the 80s began. But, SCTV was much funnier and has so many layers, I find it deeply entertaining!
@mcervantes3624 жыл бұрын
I've been a fan for decades. I introduced this program (as well as Monty Python and The Goodies) to my 20-year-old son. He asked me once, "Did all the great writers and performers die or retire? What happened to quality?"
@eg44494 жыл бұрын
Your son is very lucky to have a dad introduce him to things you know from experience. Often that stuff is "discipline and tough love" its just as important to pass along humor. My dad and I could always laugh together and we loved sharing the love of comedy with each other.

This would have been in the late 70's or early 80's when Richard Harris was considered kind of a "has been" and prior to his revival on the stage in Camelot. Therefore the spoof that he was still riding on the coat tails of the most improbable hit song ever was genius. Dave Thomas continued the Harris impression for years and it was always hilarious.

Joseph Olson There is a 1972 BBC special called "A Gala Evening of Music and Wit" where Harris was sort of doing this during the instrumental section. He is sitting on the stage during the "there will be another song for me..." section and does this awkward roll/spring to his feet during the instrumental section and essentially, well does what Dave Thomas is doing.
