Sammy's got a brand new look and new guests... bringing him right into the 1980s. Guests include Jennifer Beals, Henry Kissinger, and David Horowitz. Starring Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Martin Shot, Ron James, and Debra McGrath.

Out of all the cast, looking back I feel Joe Flaherty was most underrated. He never really hit it big after sctv really, but he had so many really funny skits. Count Floyd, Cabelliero, Maudlin, and he actually did fairly good impressions depending on which ones he was doing, bing crosby and other ect.. Honestly didn't appreciate him as much when I was younger but I really think he is hilarious.

Juul's work is fantastic, plus he has such a fun personality! He put Joe in an amazing pastel pink suit and flowered tie on the David Steinberg Show... an outfit both hilarious and yet somehow oddly stylish. And Joe Flaherty, as always, makes it work.

@Elizabeth Frantes yeah and i was just thinking about the sketch .. K-tels fast talking playhouse. Joe plays Broderick Crawford. Just an amazingly funny impression. Also in play it again Bob with Moranis doing woody allen, Joe pops up as Bing Crosby to give advice on how to deal with Bob Hope who is obsessed with "stewed fruit" and hanging on "that bar" . Amazing stuff..

Alan Thicke was so insufferable on his own show. He fancied himself as some kind of great entertainer, and the show itself was contrived to showcase what a 'great talent' that we were all so lucky to get to experience, but 90 minutes an episode seemed like 90 hours! He had a passable singing voice, but his 'lounge lizard' covers of the top hits of the day were pretty lame.

It's posted on KZfaq. And "Thursday Night Live" was more of a spoof of Saturday Night Live during its 5th season (1979-1980), where the cast was overstuffed and the humor was becoming tasteless and shocking (but compared to Jean Doumdnian's terrible sixth season, season five still had some humor to it). I didn't really see any reference to "Fridays" outside of Rick Moranis as the Jack Burns-esque show announcer, though the voice he uses sounds like SNL's long-running announcer, Don Pardo.

Can anybody help me out with who some of the "Zanies" are supposed to be? Martin Short is obviously doing Howie Mandel. I'm guessing that the grouchy woman in the suit is Paula Poundstone? But who's the guy who keeps tumbling, or the "intellectual" with the cracking voice? I looked at Thicke of the Night's wiki page and Mandel wasn't a regular on the show and neither was Poundstone, but nobody who was on the show seems to quite sync up with these characters. Also, could that really be Joe Flaherty singing? It kind of sounds like his voice, but it also sounds more polished than I can imagine him singing!
@ryanjackson3428
@ryanjackson3428 3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, Thicke of the Night was a followup to the Alan Thicke Show, a standard Canadian talk show. After examining that IMDB page, here are my best guesses for who they're parodying: Cole: Orson Bean and/or Alan King (King "Cole", get it?) Howie Suzloff: Howie Mandel McConnachie: Elayne Boosler and/or Kate "Meatballs" Lynch The pratfall guy is probably a random element to emphasize the overall hackiness of the show rather than any one personality.

To be fair, those were very difficult items to utilize in improvisational prop comedy. Howie tried his best. The "Where's Gilligan?" bit was funny!

Marty tried harder than Howie Mandel ever did.

"Thicke of the Night", the basis for this parody, reeked of desperation. Alan's eyes twinkled as if something great was about to happen, but it rarely did. My favourite memory of this show was when the house cast of players lined up on stage with mic stands and live looped audio for old Dobey Gillis episodes. This segment was quick and irrenverent and daring and fresh. Other than that, the show was unfortunately, Alan and his sidekick soaking through their suits.

I think that SCTV was much better before they revamped the show for the US audience. It didn’t have that Canadian feel to it.
