agreed. I looked forward to this show every friday night here in Atlanta and would watch it with my cousin after a little herbal enhancement. Funniest show ever.

MrAitraining: I agree, but it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Their sketches were filmed vs. being performed live. More time for costume and makeup changes and also for rehearsal and multiple takes, if necessary. Big difference. Love all the stars that came from this show. Comedy geniuses, as witnessed by their post SCTV careers. Everyone except Joe Flaherty for some unfair reason. There’s a LOT of talent north of the border.

SCTV, Fridays, In Living Color, Key and Peele, and Chappelle's Show: the five sketch shows that are as good or better than Saturday Night Live. Honorable Mention goes to Kids in the Hall and MADtv (seasons 8 to 14. I didn't care much for seasons 1 to 7, and, much like 2016, the revival 15th season was a trainwreck that no one remembers or cares about). The British sketch shows like Monty Python and Benny Hill are in a class by themselves, as is Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. This is just my opinion, so don't rake me over the coals over this.

I don't think it's that there'd be a "meltdown" if it was made today, but rather that the joke just wouldn't be funny if it was aired today. And not because of "snowflake PC" people, but just because of how different the world is. This was made in Canada in the 70s or 80s. Today, given the frequency of random acts violence by troubled lone gunmen in the United States, a skit like this would just hit way too close and personal to be funny. Humor has to work with the time and world it's made in. This is still funny today because we can think of it in the context it was created in. But imagine SNL trying a skit like this today. It's not like it would be roaringly funny but shut down in spite of that due to the PC police. No, rather, it wouldn't be funny BECAUSE of the sensitivity and currency of the subject matter.

@MissDroplette Kaplan didn't go on to other things as I've since learned that he had a producer behind the scenes of WBK for some inexplicable reason stirring up tension between him and Marcia Strassman. When Kaplan realized Strassman was being done the same way, it seems they appeared together on The Tonight Show to talk about it. Even still, Kaplan was a total one-trick pony with his voice. I've seen him in serious programs, like an episode of Police Story and he still comes across like Mr. Kotter. In the end, it didn't matter to him. He got into other successful lines of work, it seems.
