I wanted to title this one "Scuba Adventures and Turtle Killers", but Jason said it was too dramatic. I get his point, but it is true. Those plastic floating bags kill hungry unsuspecting turtles (and other underwater creatures too).

Love this. I am having a war with plastic. Use the mesh bags you have, grocery canvas bags, quart and gallon reusable bags for sandwiches and stuff. The one thing I can suggest, almost every thing we buy comes in some plastic bag, like frozen berries from Costco or the dog treats bag, so I use them for my garbage rather than another big plastic garbage bag. Thanks for bringing this subject to light.

I love the stretchy net bags-they finally converted me away from plastic bags at the grocery market. My favorite thing about them is how much they expand, and I only have 4, so the people who work at the grocery HAVE to cram everything I get into 4 bags. They hate it-I love it, lol. No more 1 tomato in a big plastic bag nonsense :).

Another fantastic episode...thanks! I was interested in the bio-degradable plastic bag comments and I agree 100% with what you have said.....too easy for them to be 'disposed of' over the side of a boat etc. Great to get a timely reminder of what's what, thanks for the heads up. I can confirm that here in Australia those type of bags (from the supermarkets when you buy groceries) are now BANNED in most supermarkets across the country...a good thing for sure. We have an annual huge Clean Up Australia Day and volunteers pick up hundreds of tonnes of discarded rubbish from beaches, creeks, rivers and lakes...at least that's a start I guess. I live on the Queensland coast and the bags are not the major problem for us, it's empty water bottles, discarded fishing line and broken sections of fishing nets that are washed up with the high tides on a regular basis. Those items do not break down and create havoc with dolphins and migrating whales but every year the same thing keeps happening. Locals do a daily pick up of the mess off the beaches but none of the authorities seem to give a thought as to how this stuff pollutes our waters, it just keeps happening. I hate to say this but visitors to this area are by far the more serious offenders with dropping rubbish over the side into the sea, outta sight outta mind I guess. I shudder to think what the oceans will look like in another 20 years! Very sad!! Thanks for sharing, just loved the underwater footage. Love your work!!

Thanks so much for using your platform and your influence to help educate and inform about such an important topic. And just awesome that you’ve become Ambassadors! 60 Minutes did a piece not too long ago about the huge problem of plastics in our oceans. I’ve been really changing my shopping and product decisions, like I no longer buy liquid hand soap, but have gone back to bar soap that is without packaging or wrapped in paper. And in my location in California, the grocery stores stopped providing plastic bags quite a while ago. Customers bringing in their own tote bags is the norm here now. Small steps in the right direction! Thanks for another wonderful video 🙏🤗

Thank you thank you! I’ve been paying attention to zero waste concepts recently. Organic muslin bags are good for bulk rice, flours, sugars & other bulk powders. Also body wash bars instead of liquids in plastic bottles are good. Can use them as shampoo too. Also toothpaste tablets instead of toothpaste in tubes. Not sure if a variety of mason jars sizes are good for sailing since they are glass, but taking those to grocery shop are good too. Have you tried the bees wax wraps for produce storage?? Anyway I’ll shut up now. Thanks for spreading the good word! #zerowaste #plasticfree 👌✌🏻

Yoly collects used plastic bags used by markets and places like Walmart/Home Depot etc. She cuts them into 2 inch strips, twists them into something called "plarn" (plastic yarn) and weaves/crochets them into 6 foot long bed mats for homeless people. They insulate as well as allow water to easily pass through them, similar to the camping mats many RVers use. She is part of a group at her church that teaches the technique to others and they distribute over a hundred a year to various shelters.

Packaging science major here I study how to design trash among other things. Let me further confuse you. Compostable, bio-based and biodegradable plastic are all similar, but different. A biodegradable bag with break down, it just may take a year. Furthermore as it breaks down it really just makes smaller and smaller pieces which likely have a larger impact. Most importantly you typically can't recycle biodegradable plastics. Compostable plastics will break down naturally and safely. But again you can't recycle them if you want too. They have to be composted. The third option is bio-based which is where it is made from natural materials but they can not biodegrade and they will not work in a compost pile. Now this may sound like the worst option, however it takes a tremendous amount of energy to produce plastic. But it takes significantly less to recycle it. If you can get most people onboard with recycling this is likely the best option with a typical recycling system (for discarded plastics). I will mention paper as well because people love to suggest that. Well paper actually takes more energy than plastic but will break down naturally. In terms of grocery bags the best option is reusable bags hands down. But that is never going to have 100% implementation. I read about lots of future technologies in packaging every month. Most are 5-10 years out if they ever come to market and the rest will never see mass market use for a whole bunch of reasons mainly cost and looks. Two things I am optimistic about are chemical recycling of plastics and programmable biodegradable plastics. Chemical recycling solves the recycling contamination problem with plastics by breaking them up into their chemical components and not just melting them. Programmable biodegradable degradable plastics can be set to decompose after a certain amount of time. Further more these plastics are supposed to be home biodegradable. Not sure about compost safe. It is important to remember that there is no one perfect solution to packaging sustainability. But their are a plenty good solutions that to work depending on the situation. It is very important to study the lifecycle of the product so you can pick the best current option. But it is just as important to reevaluate those options every few years. Currently I am trying to convince a multi-billion dollar company that they should give a damn about sustainability even if they (falsely) think their customers don't care.
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for trying to convince a large company about sustainability. More customers care than they think. We aren't given too many choices when it comes to purchasing something that has no or less plastic or the dreaded styrofoam. I understand that in Europe, or some parts of it, manufacturers are charged for disposing of packaging, so they try to reduce it or use better materials, which addresses the problem on the front end, where it belongs. In the U.S. we let them do whatever they want, so they get all the profit and then the taxpayer has to pay to dispose of it. It is the old formula of privatizing the profit and socializing the cost. One issue I would like you to keep in mind, one that a lot of people, most especially the 80+% that live in urban areas, is that in rural areas options for recycling are fewer. I live in a fairly large California county that is somewhat remote and has a population of 13,000 people, with about 8,000 living in the county's only incorporated town. We an recycle plastic and glass beverage containers and #1 PETE and #2 HDPE plastic, as long as it isn't black. We can't recycle the rest. It is a matter of trucking everything to southern California to plants that use the material or used to send it to China. The cost of shipping can often exceed the value of the material. We used to be able to recycle plastic with the triangle symbol on it, no matter what the number is. Now that we can't we are taking 2-3 times as much trash to the dumpster as we used to. I understand that glass and some other materials covered by the "bottle bill" in California is used to subsidize the small, remote counties in the state when shipping is expensive. Money is taken from the unredeemed deposits consumers pay to help. In our county I think this is what is used to get the glass to distant big cities where it can be used. Many manufacturers assume that all the plastic with a recycle symbol on it can be recycled, but this is not at all true in small remote locations. They could use #1 or #2 plastic, but I suppose that would be expensive, but the result is small counties being saddled with the cost of building and managing landfills that contain a lot of things, mostly plastics that are too expensive to haul away. Large corporations generally ignore rural needs as it is a small proportion of the population (19% as of 2010) and is shrinking slowly.
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 5 жыл бұрын
P.S. We are trying to purchase things with less packaging and are changing our buying habits to avoid things made of or packaged in plastic. We've been using cloth shopping bags since the late 70's when REI started selling some very durable bags as illustrated by the fact we are still using nearly every original bag we bought. We recently purchased mesh cloth bags to carry our produce to avoid using the ubiquitous produce bags. We are seeing more people doing this in our area. Make sure to remove the produce from the bags and put it down on the conveyor belt raw as you will be charged for the weight of the cloth bag otherwise and the difference is a significant amount of money for your produce. California now prohibits the use of plastic shopping bags and some people howled about it. We had already eliminated their use decades ago, so the law changed nothing for us.

Great video! Even greater message. Thank you. Thank you greater still, for removing the plastic- especially at that depth. Unless you free dive, I would think only scuba diving would be the way to both see and get to. It has been KZfaq that I have learned the most about plastics. Today I’m a much more aware consumer. I only use reusable but mostly cloth bags. I will be editing this post to include an amazing KZfaq channel. I have to check the spelling first! Until next time... Donna Edited to add: The KZfaq channel is The Skoolie Dean is the creator He has a personal mission to pick up trash, wherever he is. He focuses on the micro trash, like plastic bottle lids, candy and gum wrappers for example. He has organized other nomads to clean up trash on BLM land. It was shocking to see all that they collected. I just think he deserves a shoutout for his continued focus on making places cleaner than when he arrived there!
