There is a yin to every yang and never have we felt that more than in boat life. The reality of this lifestyle is far more complex than these weekly postcards we send.
From beautiful moments and epic encounters in the underwater world to endless repairs brought on by the salty environment we love so much. It feels like a battle of extremes some days and it can be a challenge to find the balance.
Like all older boats, our Curiosity requires a lot of maintenance and a steady stream of replacement parts. Add in our inexperience and a remote location to the mix and the whole experience shifts to from physical to mental. We have to consistently fine tune our attitudes and learn to take it in stride. Some days, a good beer really helps. 😉
Too much work and not enough play or vice versa leads to an imbalance that can cause disaster.
We all experience this yin and yang in life. Of all the various lifestyles we’ve had the great fortune to experience, sailing around the world has the most dramatic highs and lows. But, it’s like Brian said in the movie Vanilla Sky,
‘WITHOUT THE BITTER, BABY, THE SWEET AIN’T AS SWEET.’
While swelling batteries, rusted engine parts and broken water pumps may be bitter, nothing is sweeter than swimming with a Manta Ray the lagoons of Bora Bora!
Shared with LOVE 💕 from all of us here aboard s/v Curiosity,
- Jason, Nikki, Cleo and Singa 😻

I grew up fixing cars and loved mechanical jobs. So became a mechanic, worked as a car mechanic for 5 months realized we didn't get to fix things only replace things. Quit straight away 🤣 now I only work on my own things. You'll get it done Jason! Sure must suck when you have to get spare parts though on the ocean!

I have been watching your videos since you were in the motor home. This is the first comment I have made but I was so impressed by y’all. I am a professional mechanic in Dallas TX. I have advanced level specialist certification and I am impressed. Not many people can take a starter apart and make it work with no new parts. Great job. Just remember you have the best life anyone could imagine. Don’t let anything frustrate you.

My hat is off to you guys. I’ve watched your videos for the past year but was not aware how you got into sailing. Then I watch a couple 3 year old videos. Your trip to Key West with an on board sailing instructor. You two jumped in with both feet. Wow! Plan your life and then work your plan! As Cher stated, life has no rehearsals. You only get one time around. You two have grabbed life by the balls and set out to follow your passions. Five 👍’s to you both.

You guys are crazy awesome! Real life video, I've been following you two for a long time and I knew exactly how Jason was feeling about that starter and pump, and the need for a pressure regulator. I'm so impressed that you got the starter fixed. It must have just froze up and you disassembled it, broke it loose, lubed it and reinstalled it. Like my Dad used to say, "my boat is a hole in the water you throw money into". I think every sailor has heard the saying and lived it. Anyway, spectacular ocean lightning video. The closest I've been to Bora Bora is through travel ads selling a product. Is the place overrated? At least with many other destinations you have sailed to, a good number of them had many points of interest worth visiting and exploring on land. To me, Bora Bora is depicted as a destination for couples or honeymooners dancing on the sand wearing pure white outfits or hanging out in a bar or in a hot tub pounding down the suds with the commercial actors always posing with wide open mouth smiles. Does the island have any wildlife, I'm sure there are birds that make landfall there, sea birds more than likely. What balances out any lack of island wildlife, (if that's the case) is the apparent abundance of sea life. I really enjoyed your underwater videos featuring the Manta Rays and the sea turtle. He/she was really moving along and I didn't realize all of that power came from their front flippers, the back ones were "silent". Unfortunately, both these beautiful creatures are "harvested" and likely done so without regard to their conservation or status as threatened or endangered. I wonder if they have any such protection and if they do, is the system corrupt as in most third world countries? Not saying Bora Bora is third world, but old habits carry over and so does poaching.

So proud of you , fixing the starter ! and coolest ocean life video ever ! Water filtration is very dependent on flow and pressure. Consider your own solution to the house pressure issue. Sales reps just want to make sales. Reduce your house pressure when you backflush the water maker if that is actually the problem. My water filtration system was tested for contaminants at parts per billion.

I’m sorry you’re having all of these problems one on top of another. I do understand it comes in waves. I’m fulltime RVing and I’ve been through more than a few issues myself. It cost me a fortune for all of the stuff I didn’t think, or could not, fix myself. However, I’ve learned tons this winter and now know how to take apart my furnace and water heater. Jason, you’ve come a long way since Top of The World Highway tire fixing! I’m very impressed! I’d probably still be in dry dock!

What a drag about the pump. The not knowing what you don't know gets ya every time. And gosh darnit, sometimes even when we do know we still manage to screw it up, like when I ran over the sprinkler head with the lawnmower yesterday. 4 years I've been mowing that lawn and going around that sprinkler on the edge...until yesterday.

Heads up! It is unwise to regulate a pump. You have a pump that was designed to pump at a certain pressure/volume and when you regulate it down, it's pumping against resistance. The pump's life shortens quickly.
