This KZfaq video compares ScuffX and Aqua Guard to determine which one provides better coverage on a green door. Using the same brand of brush, on the same surface, and with the same applicator (myself), we'll see which paint exhibits superior opacity for this extreme color. To find out the result, you'll have to watch the video. During the demonstration, I'll summarize my experience with both paints and share insights on their application process. Stay tuned to discover which paint performs best when dealing with challenging colours like green on doors.

Been using the Scuff X for nearly 2 years now, wouldn't use anything else now. As you say flows lovely, gives a real close finish to oil. Also I find it goes along way. I just wished they sold it in a smaller quantity.

Great comparison Phil, always use Aqua Guard with the aqua undercoat (uc is really good imo) and agree with everything you say about it. Think I’ve got used to the thickness of it, and the creamy whiteness too. After seeing this think I’ll finally give Scuff x a go, prefer the finish of it on the door. Less shine looks better to me 👍

Has to be one of the best comparisons you've done Phil. I used to use Aqua guard alot but once i used the BM i realised how hard the Johnnies was making me work. BM feels far easier to work and lay off and definitely flows out flatter. I was always reluctant to add water to the Aqua guard due to ninja runs but i do still use it where budget is an issue. Definitely worth keeping both on the van 👍

Great video Phil and very informative. I’ve found Jono’s AG is better if you add a splash of water, flows out better and you don’t get those ninja runs and creepers. I’ve also found applying Tikkurila Everal Aqua 40 hard work as it’s a thick paint, again adding water helps otherwise it drags because it dries so fast. Scuff X takes some beating, just need to buy 3.8lts 🤷🏼

I'm so glad you mentioned the drips Phil, I had a number of them when I first used AG, the 2nd time I was more cautious and worked it more (as you say you try not to with water based but I feel AG needs working more) still got 1 or 2 in a room. 3rd time will be the charm I'm going to dilute it 10% and see how that affects it 😎

Phil thanks for these video reviews.. it's good to see more fellow Dec's taking a interest in the vast arsenal of options we have these days. I've been using aqua guard since it came out on launch and can honestly say its definitely the most durable water based coating I've used to date. 3 coats and it trumps even oil satin for me. However it does need the correct brush and a certain amount of added heat when required. Since I started using the Staalmeester 2027 or 2023 Pro-Hybrid brushes.. runs have been non existent. Would definitely recommend for this paint. Used alot of scruff x.. Love the eggshell but it definitely needs some extender for some larger areas doors ect..and it doesn't level off as good as aqua guard and tikkurila intact imo. Ps Wish the old sikkens(ici) bl satura was still around😢

Cheers. You saw my video on Sikkens BL then? Aqua Gaurd.... It's too hard work to apply. Last thing you need to be doing is checking for runs. And you can't get better brushes than Arroworthy or Monarch... Cheap Brushes I can understand it not flowing well, but any quality brush should apply it.

I used the aqua guard on a hsl when I first made the switch from oil based. I figured it would be an easier transition being a hybrid, wrong! I found it hard work to use. Didn’t flow very well and I was constantly checking for sags and runs, especially on the spindles. It’s also a death sentence for brushes. It did however end up with a lovely finish after the struggle. I haven’t touched it since. Isomat isolac for me at the moment. I’m going to decorate my bedroom in BM aura and give scuff x a try as well. Thumbs up for the video.

Aqua Guard isn't a hybrid. If it's running, it's going on too thick and not spreading well, which can happen with the wrong brush.

@@atAntC you’re right! I just checked the specs and it was the undercoat that’s a hybrid. I just assumed the whole system was when I used it. As for application, I still think it was tough going. Compared to using oil based, I hated it. Old dog, new tricks and all,

After watching your video, I tried the scuff X on a Howdens burford smooth four panel door, the door comes primed ( not sure what with, they're a yellowish colour) they are one of the most difficult doors to paint and to get to look mint, they're better painted with a colour than white, what I found with the scuffX satin was it dried really quickly and the open time could have been better, the second coat also dried a little too quickly, the door will need at least another coat, to be honest I didn't like the finish, it looked plastic, there's too much shine, we have been using tikkurila helmi 10, 20 and 30 , the coverage isn't as good as the scuffX but the finish looks better, also available in smaller cans. Thanks for your video

Those Tikkurila finishs are more on the side of eggshell. Everal aqua 40 is more satin.. which will be a slightly more sheen than ScuffX You may like the finish of H&G scuffgard

Great video Phil, I can honestly say I have never had one run or sag with scuff x. Once it’s dry it feels like silk to touch. I never thought I would go over from oilbase until I found this. The only negative I have, it’s not even price because I think it’s worth every penny if your using it in your everyday white . Why are they not doing smaller tins? The job I am on at the moment needs two different colours on the woodwork. So that’s £200 plus your left with best part of a full tin of paint. Need to get bm to sort this out

I gave her the options. She decided to go with scuff x and then I talked her back out of it?There was just going to be to much paint waste. So I ordered the paint in advance satin. I have literally just found a almost a full 3.7 tin of advance in the same colour that I had from a job left over. I kid you not! What are the odds. Oh well got two tins of it now!

Both needed a third coat, so I'd buy Johnstones. But.... The Scuff went on easier...AG has a rep for runs/sags...doing it all day and with a brush, I'd prefer to use Scuff. Finish, subjective, so its irrelevant. So its really down to a cost thing, if you can get away with charging double for the Scuff compared to the Johnstone's or most other WB finish paints with the customer then Scuffx has got to be the way to go.
