I've spent a few weeks working on these parts now, so I'm happy to finally be able to share a bit about where I am in this project. I'm so excited to see Rhyllyn slowly coming together! I feel like his customization has been a bit more intense than what I did with Rune, even though they'll ultimately be the same sort of mod--putting reptilian fantasy parts on both dolls.
These still need another layer or two of puttying and I need to file down the claws and refine the joint cups, but they're very close now. :D

I enjoy listening to your voice and your explanations. I am replacing missing hands and forearms to a number of dolls in my collection. I will explore different materials and connectors for my vinyl and plastic dolls. Thank you for your demonstrations and advice.

I love how you mentioned how long this process actually takes! When watching the sculpting in video form we tend to forget the weeks (sometimes months or years) of work that go begin the video.

Gosh, yeah. And in my head I KNOW it takes forever, but I was still surprised at how long this took me! I wish I was the kind of sculptor who could have a prototype in a few hours, but I'm just not--building from nothing takes a long time and as I get into making my own doll parts, I'm trying to document just how much time it takes. Blew me away, really.

I'm really excited for the casting part ! Personally I don't understand and can't seem to get a grip of how dolls are cast, especially things like the arms/legs/torso. And no one seems to have any easily understandable tutorials either ! So I'm excited see your take on it ! But I was also wondering if this would mean that you would have to redo his legs ?? Or would they still fit onto the new body ?

I'm honestly dreading the casting process a little bit, because while I've done hands and drilled parts, I've never done pieces like the arms with preserved holes in the middle. You're right, though. It's hard to find information on how to do it. I'll be sure to share the things I mess up along the way, too XD

Perhaps in the future considering 3d modeling and printing pieces, there are doll part models available for free and easy to use model editing software also available for free and then you only have to sculpt one of each piece and mirror it in the slicer software. I picked up the hobby in January of this year with a creality printer (would recommend the creality ender 3 it’s ~$200 and has great resolution) and have been going nonstop since than. I just printed my first 1/3 bjd and am working on her now, there’s even skin tone filament available on amazon prime.

I actually started with 3D modeling and printing but I found it didn't really work well for me--I do best with a hybrid approach of starting pieces in 3D but doing the fine detail work with physical media. I find I get very frustrated doing small details in 3D, and my computer is also not able to run 3D software well due to its age... but that's something I'll discuss more in next weekend's video, actually :D I do want to invest in a 3D printer at some point, though, because I feel like it really opens a ton of doors for more customization options!

@YahveAnne 5 жыл бұрын
Lomi's Playground that’s fair though if you’re gonna do that I’d just suggest doing so sooner rather than later because some of the better printer companies are having huge sales right now and Amazon occasionally has sales on there amazon basic filament which puts is around half price

Oh if only money were no object! ;o; I feel like the things I want are always on sale when I don't have the money to spare for them, does that happen to you? The Creality Ender is the one I've been eyeing for a couple years now, but it's unfortunately more of a 'someday' thing--especially with us just moving two months ago. It'll take a bit for our finances to stabilize again so I can buy fun things, I'm afraid XD

Lomi's Playground yeah it was the same for me, but I saved up a lot and jumped and now I make most of my money with my printers, I’m a full time artist and now use my printers to finish my commissions in record time, I started with the largest creality printer, the cr10s5, which was a huge mistake the ender 3 was next with there 5 year anniversary sale which was the best thing I ever did, and now I got my third printer a longer lk2 which is the best of both but not quite beginner friendly when you get the chance I’d suggest getting the ender 3 with instillation so you can pick the guys brain with questions and maintenance tips though this is definitely not something you shouldn’t do until you’re okay and settled your right this definitely isn’t the most cost friendly tool

Just the cheapest cordless one! I think it was about $20 or so when I got it--they're black now, instead of blue, but most hardware stores have them. I think the current model is the 7000N or something?

I actually use that clay and I notice that it is much better than the clay that is at hobby lobby in the box DO NOT GET THAT CLAY since you are experimenting with clay. I had no idea to use wire for hands. Do you know the thickness of the wire you used?

It's super thin! I believe it was 26 gauge, but the label fell off a long time ago so I'm not positive ^^;

@@LomisPlayground thank you! May I also ask what grade sandpaper you use? I usually use 220-250 grade. I also would like a recommendation on fine sandpaper please?
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 5 жыл бұрын
@@rook-of-the-plauge2945 In this video, I only used 220 grit in the 3M Pro Grade precision paper. For finer stuff, I use 320 grit 3M Wetordry paper and then finish with the same thing in 600 grit. I rarely go finer than 600 because I find anything higher gives a bit of a shiny finish.
