18th February 2017 saw the 25th and Final Narrow Gauge South West Model Railway Exhibition, Shepton Mallet, hosted by the Small & Delightful Railway Group. To mark the final event, the show featured a record of over 75 Narrow Gauge Layouts in all variety of Scales and Gauges, from H0i right up to G Scale, plus a wide selection Demo's, Societies and Trade Stands.
As always the show was a huge success, with record turnout from the public. An all out superb show, and one I wish I knew about earlier.
Hope you enjoy!

A superb compilation video of a memorable show - thanks for bringing it to us. I've been involved with the show for the last several years, but several others have been there since the beginning, although we have always been a small team. Many might be surprised by the amount of work and organisation required to put on this one-day affair, booking all the layouts, negotiating with the school, getting the site ready and all the layouts in place (requiring the famous 9-inch-to-the foot ruler and a shoe horn!), not forgetting those dozens of home-made cakes, even tea urns and signage - all has to be in place. The car parking was a bit of a struggle this year with the huge number attending, so my apologies to anyone who didn't enjoy that part of their day. We did organise a free minibus from the overspill car parks but I do appreciate that we were somewhat overtaxed in that department. All in all, it was a great show - probably the biggest and best narrow gauge show ever in the UK. With the fact that none of us are getting any younger and with some health problems making the last few years more difficult, we came to the conclusion that it was better to quit while we were at the top of our game rather than let the show deteriorate. Thanks to everyone who helped, all the exhibitors and the 900-odd visitors. A show to remember. Noel

Thanks ever so much Noel and thank you and the team for putting on a cracking show! Totally agree there, as I put on a little show a few years back was luck I was offered the site for it. Oh yes! Those cakes were superb! Had trouble choosing which! ;) Park was no issue for me, went straight to the overspill and was first there. Certainly the perfect send off for such a great event. Just wish a knew about it a few years ago :)

Excellent video photography! All the shots are steady, well exposed and just the right length. Well done ! What a shame this is the last exhibition of this group of enthusiasts.

Was amazed by the turnout and quality of the layouts! Plus the size of them too. Many thanks! Took over 4 hours to film the lot and over 8 hours to edit down 2 and half hours of footage ;) Got there in the end though ;) Many thanks indeed!

Got to be one of the best I've ever been too! The amount of superb layouts and little locos was amazing! So many ideas! Especially for Industrial themed layouts. Very tempted to added a little bit of 009 to my layout revamp plans... ;)

Some very nice layouts there, providing a wealth of inspiration for a fledgling 009 layout at my end. Thanks for sharing x (Although it has to be said that some of the operators run their trains at speeds which, if scaled up into the real world, would prompt HMRI to revoke their railway operating licence in a trice . . .)

Truly was indeed. The reason behind it being the last show, is the guys that put it together have said that they are getting to older to do what they use to do and there's not enough young people to take it on, which is a real shame. So rather than the show to fizzle out, they though they would go out with their biggest and best yet! Which they certainly achieved! :) Oh yes, the crossing was amazing! Very clever how it all worked. Glad you enjoyed!

Quite a lot more footage than I got, there even were some layouts at the beginning that I didn't see. Still a great show nonetheless, such a shame that was the last one. Keep the faith - Callum

I certainly got a lot, over 2 and half hours I think! Managed to get it down to just under 30 for the video luckily, though it did take over 8 hours to edit and 12 hours to upload :p Really is a same indeed, just wish I knew about it earlier

I question why none of the layouts were ID'd - a simple scan of the signage wd have sufficed?

Hi Peter, I would of normally put a list in the disciption below, however I lost the show guide. It took in total 5 hours to get around the 70+ layouts at the show, some of which also didn't have name boards.

any idea what the gauge/scale of the layout at 22mins is? looks smaller than 009?

it seems as tho no one models the talyllyn railway, which is a real shame cause its such a beautiful line
@SDJR7F88

Though no models of the railway itself, there certainly were a fair few Talyllyn Model running. The layout at 12:02 made a fair bit of Talyllyn Stock running, though a Ffestinog 0-4-0STT was running when I had my camera out ;)

Funny most layouts show the effort the builder had put into landscaping, buildibgs and trees. But when it comes to engine performance it looks like the 1950ies with those critters running like s..... Come on, invest some bucks in good motors and flywheels and high reduction gearboxes and the fun you have with your layout will triple.
@Trevor_Austin
@Trevor_Austin 5 жыл бұрын
This clip shows that 009 modellers desperately need proper gearboxes, of High Level Kits quality, that will allow proper running. With few exceptions the 009 locos had to run at either full tilt or not at all. We can do better than this in the 21st century.

Indeed, however it is improving regarding motors and gearing. Here's a video of my 009 WW1 Trench Railway Amiens 1918 in action :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/haumlN1yzJ_dknU.html
