In this video, Nick goes over the process of drilling and tapping a Gen 4 LS block to accept the knock sensor from a Gen 3 harness. It's a simple process, but it's an important one to cover when making this swap.
Have other questions, ideas, or anything you'd like us to cover? Comment below, we'd love to hear from you!

It makes a LOT more sense to me to change the threads on the sensor (as I did with my LY6 installation into my 2000 Silverado) since knock sensors are much cheaper to replace if you screw up compared to a block. Plus, the gen IV sensors will still fit if your tuner can work with them. And, it's much easier to change the threads on the sensor at your bench than changing threads in the block while it's in the vehicle with all of the potential obstacles. It just makes more sense all the way around, IMHO.

@@mikeverything4098 it helps if you have a lathe so you can turn the threaded area down to the proper size for the threading die. It can still be done without a lathe, it just takes more time. Typically you'll hold the part in a vise and use strips of sand paper to work it down to size. I don't remember the thread sizes but that's easy to find online or from the Gen IV knock sensors you may have on hand. If nothing else you have the block. I've read conflicting information about wiring Gen IV 2 wire knock sensors into a Gen III ECU that expects a 1 wire sensor. That would be ideal but so far I haven't seen any certainty about it working. Good luck with whichever way you choose.

@@renaissanceman7145 Some info I have found during my research, not sure if correct. Note it appears knock on Gen IV also pulls throttle position (electronic throttle) on knock, not just timing. This is what efilive shows: "The PCM can be used with two types of knock sensors, this parameter allows you to select which type of sensor is fitted to the engine. (This is available in HP tuners so seems to be correct) The standard LS1 sensor is a resonant type, these sensors are connected like so - Sensor Bank #1 - J1,pin51 Sensor Bank #2 - J1,pin11 If the engine is fitted with flat response sensors (like the LS2 uses), then the connections are like so - Sensor Bank #1 GND - J1,pin49 Sensor Bank #1 Signal - J1,pin09 Sensor Bank #2 GND - J1,pin50 Sensor Bank #1 Signal - J1,pin10 Part number for the new flat-response sensors: 12623730 Adaptor harness: www.amazon.com/dp/B082WMTSN5/ So repining the sensor signals needs to be done: Sensor Bank #1 Signal - J1, pin 09 - was pin 51 Sensor Bank #2 Signal - J1, pin 10 - was pin 11 Change sensor type in ecu - then change settings - to what?

You said, don't use the gen 4 knock sensors in a gen 3 block because of the tuner probably can't get them to work properly. If thats the case does that mean the tuner doesn't tune actual gen 4 engines in 2008+ GM car or truck? Most experienced tuners you would assume if they can tune a gen 4 engine that they can tune gen 4 knock sensors in a gen 3 block

So if I drill and tap my gen 4 block for gen 3 sensors to use with 24x stock ecm and later decide that I want to use a holley ecm and go 58x, do I need to convert back to gen 4 knock sensors that are only 8mm in size and if so, how do I do that when the holes are drilled for 10mm due to the gen 3 knock sensor conversion?
@Sdpartscenter
@Sdpartscenter 3 жыл бұрын
If you go back to 58x/4x you will have to go back to the Gen 4 style knock sensors. Drilling and tapping the side of the block for the GEN III sensors is kind of a "final solution." If you're looking to convert back in the future, it may be best to rethink your current plans, or you'll have to weld up the holes and re-tap for the smaller thread when you convert back.
