In an apt way this shanty can be associated with the end of a voyage and depending on the versions the end of the age of sail. A haunting but still enjoyable reminder to love what is for it may not always remain.

the part of the verse here at 3:37 probably isn't the "swearing" we know of but y'know... actually swearing an oath, a vow or something like that. Probably swore to mutiny, swore revenge for their fallen brothers and the ship(the ship's not in top condition, because they had to get rid of water in the hold before abandoning it), or just swearing to be friends or something.

The thing with shanties is the first rendition you ever hear is your cannon and whatever version you hear next is "just a version" and there's always something wrong with it. However, your shanties have actually rewritten the shanties I've known pretty much all my life. Congratulations!

It takes me back to my time in the Navy. While we didn't have sails of course, there is something "eternal" about being at sea. You rekindle that feeling in grand style. Now excuse me, I need to find a rag, my eyes seem a bit misty..

Beautiful shanty. I often wonder what the men were thinking at the end of a long sea voyage. What battles or storms did they weather? What were they hauling? Did they take this ship as a prize after a lengthy skirmish? What beautiful and terrific sea creature did thry spot on those long days, breaching the murky roving tar? What faroff ports did they sail to? What were they like in the 1600s/1700s compared to now? And are the girls they left on those farflung shores more comely than those waiting back home? I when I was 18, decided to go to dublin, I love guinness and folk songs and the flogging molly where playing there so it seemed a pretty good start. It was my first trip on my own. It was the first time I went to a country where they speek English. I Just had a bag and my guitar and I stayed one week. The last night before I had to take my plane, I was coming back to my hotel after the show and I decided to go one last night to the pub which was near my hotel. The night was amazing, I talked about music with a violin player and then the pub was closing. I was one of the last people with 4 Americans and 3 old men. They started to sing... It was unbelievable! So I came closer to hear them and after a song one of them asked me to sing something. And the first thing that came in my mind was leave her johnny... Of cours they knew it and we all sang together. It was the best night of my trip. Now almost 2 years I started to sing while playing guitar and I made my first album and thought it's blues music, I still LOVE to sing your version of of shanties and leave her Johnny was the first and is by far my favorite!! So thank you man! Thank you for your great version of this song thank you for making one of the songs that made me dare to sing while I was just a shy teenager. I wouldn't be the same if I hadn't discovered you. And thank you for keeping those shanties alive. From a young man from Belgium, your work is amazing and inspiring!

I remember singing along with you and the soundtrack while playing Black Flag while my parents were still alive. One day, I was playing this song, singing like normal, and both my parents were in tears. My Mom, after I was done, whispered to play it again. Long story short, whenever they were both there and I was sailing, I always made sure to play "Leave Her Johnny" and sing proudly.

Well done sir, you should see the look on peoples faces here in KY when they hear these old shanties, LOL
