Another one of my favourites. I’ve noticed that different versions of these songs are nearly unrecognisably depending on the gap they leave in the chorus. I like this rhythmic version a lot since it brings it back to its pump chants origins! Another absolutely phenomenal one Seán!

I feel the need to thank you for your work. Not simply because you are truly well versed in your craft, but because exploring your performance of these shanties has helped me bond with my toddler. Anytime we get in the car he asks for sea shanties. Again, thank you. Since finding the SOTW, I find myself intrigued by nautical history as a whole. Can I ask you for some book recommendations or favorites so I can continue to learn? All the best.

Firstly, I glad that you and your toddler enjoy singing together. As for a book, Stan Hugill's collection is a great place to start. Beware of several non-pc words.

I always though shallow brown referred to the water close to shore. Shallow water can be kind of muddy, while the deep water is a beautiful blue.

Hi, Sean, I found your channel-great singing of a song I love. By the way, I don’t have the reference but Stan Hugel said this was a shanty from the West Indies, and that “Shallow” comes from a Central American Spanish term “cholo”, meaning someone who was part American Indian. It’s the most likely explanation I’ve heard. Anyway, I’ll keep listening!

The version you did with La Nef on Sea Songs is one of the most haunting and mournful songs I've ever heard, period. This one does sound more like an actual work song, though.

Well, I'm not sure what more there is to say. There were several companies operating packets, each with its own flag, etc. Several of them are referred to in songs. The Blackball Line is one that comes back a lot.

I'm not a sailor. I'm a folk musician. I've spent my fair share of time on boats, though, working and travelling. Cruising up and down the St. Laurence, crossing the Mediterranean, ferries across the Firth of Forth.

Some of them can be used for any task but most of them have specific jobs associated with them. Sometimes there is a hauling version of a song and a heaving version.

Yes. I did that deliberately. The AC version was more of a lament. I wanted to do a working song this time. I like the other version a lot, I just didn't want to do a cover version of myself.

I can pull off about two octaves from G to G. I can go lower in the morning and higher if I'm belting. G is already pretty belting. I think I did a low D on Stand Your ground. That was the next morning just for fun at the very last chord.
