Absolutely love this shanty. Was going through the journals and logs of my 2x great uncle who started whaling at the age of 15. He had written about the shanties that they sang. He mentioned this one a few times and roll the ole chariot. Excited and looking forward to it

@@micharainczuk607 he was born in Norwich,Ct and went out to sea on a whale ship at the age of 15. He was out for 3 years and in that time he was given a promotion to what was called a boat steerer, harpoon guy. His career at sea as a whaler didn't end until around 1870's. He was a captain of 3 whale ships and a first mate on a few other ships as well. He retired from the sea on Nantucket Island which is ancestral lands being 1 of the 6 founding families.

Is this one going to get a "just the shanty" video? This song perplexes me now. The main mast is cracked, the stuns'ls booms are broken, and their sails are baggy. Does this mean that "rolling" down means they're just limping their way home with the waves and what wind they can pick up? Are they singing about how excited they are to get home despite how badly the ship is damaged and how much longer it'll take to get to Maui? Or am I just misinterpreting the lyrics?
@michaelsommers23562 жыл бұрын
I've always thought that the mention of the condition of the ship is meant to show how they've been beaten about up in the cold Kamchatka Sea. Now they're happy to be headed to warm and pleasant weather. And girls.

Really, gale used to mean gentle breeze? I didn't know that. That would explain why sea shanties often talk about gales ccasually, I thought it was seamen acting tough and saying "it's just a little storm, no big deal".

What a great shanty! Great news about the Longest Johns. You guys were superb together, particularly when compared to the dog's breakfast that was Pressgang Mutiny's attempt to sing the same song with you. (I said as much to them in the video comments because the lack of respect to you in not even bothering to familiarize themselves with the song really annoyed me.) I know you'll say something lovely and polite so I'm willing to be the truth telling bad guy lol But Rolling Down to Old Maui has joined my short list of favorite shanties. Others presented for your consideration are Whup Jamboree, the Hog's Eye Man and Cyril Tawney's Chicken on a Raft. If you ever want to change it up and do a drinking song, When Jones' Ale Was New is a beauty...
